I think Nirvana was alright, but NOT for a mainstream band... grunge going mainstream, the whole idea just didn't work.
But man, listen to this shit. The Wipers were around at the same time as Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys, some of the most influential bands in punk. Can you imagine how different punk would have turned out if the Wipers had a bigger fan base?
I never understood why people take sides when it comes to covers, I mean both songs are slightly different and great in their own rights, it's like 'the hunt' by NMA (new model army) and covered by sepultura why do people pick sides when they could enjoy both.
I heard the Nirvana cover first, but I really like the original; the guitar in the fast bit sounds really 60's and Dick Dale-ish, while the Nirvana one obviously sounds 90's-ish, so I like each for their own...
ok guys this is just my opinion so don't get mad... I like the Nirvana cover better
but really i gotta give credit to this song because its the original.. and without these guys Nirvana wouldnt have covered this song so... Just keep on rockin Wipers..
I found this album a long time ago, after hearing Nirvana cover D7 and Return of the Rat on a bootleg I bought at a head shop. Greg Sage is a great song writer and I love his guitar, I have been a huge fan since exposure. Thanks Kurt for leading me to yet another great band.
I know the majority of people (me included) wound up here because of Nirvana, but, seriously, try giving a full listen to Wiper's Is This Real album. It's unbelievable.
jezus wat een ongelofelijk goed nummer, ben er danig van onder de indruk.
jesus what an incredible good song, i am deeply impressed.
hoe is het mogelijk dat er muziek wordt gemaakt die eeuwig bestaansrecht heeft omdat het zo mooi, puur en goed is en toch door minstens 90% van de wereld niet gehoord wordt?
how is it possible that music is been made that will stand the test of time for its beauty, pureness and quality, is not been heard by 90% of all people on earth??
I am a huge or was a huge Nirvana fan in the 90's. the most of his covers are better than the originals (my point of view), but here is it clear the original who's is better!!! Great work guys!!!
@PattyKakesOfSpades Greg Sage plays left handed Gibson SG Special, but is right handed. I have read in interviews that he custom builds much of his equipment. He builds his own preamps and I think he used a modified MXR Box for distortion on this one. He uses Ampeg VT-22 and an Gemini I amps.
... Guys, come on. They sound almost the exact fucking same... Until the intense part of the song, I was suspicious that it was a really, really young Kurt singing.
love love this song....the orginal is always the best in whatever band try and do cover version. Yeah Nirvana did a good version, but you should never direspect the orginal version or band who did the true song... it be like your ripping into the band you say you like in doing the song... This song kicks arse and so does the band.. and i didnt get into them because of Nirvana, i got heard from them through a friend then heard Nirvanas version of this song later on..
@instroemen Failed? Sheesh.... Pat was better technically but it's not like Kurt couldnt play. Remember Kurt was singing as well as playing, unlike Pat who did backing vocals occasionally. Pat was really just a touring support guitarist as he was never on a studio record, he never got the chance
I have an idea that Kurt Cobain played guitar lefty bcuz of Geg Sage even tho he was abidextrous his right hand was his dominant.oh welll it did end up making his scoliosis worse and that eventually led to his stomach problems....which made him do heroin....which he was on during his suicide.......CURSE YOU GREG FOR BEING LEFTYYYYYYYY!!!!!
@jailbaitvids :O thats great in all but I love the scream Kurt does :) I love both versions though and the guitar is both equally as powerful and angry as each
This song always reminded me of someone who was really drugged up "str8 as an arrow defect defect not str8 not so str8" u know the rest but now I think it's about someone who doesn't belong because their so different that they think they're from another planet because they dont fit in wanting to go back home with the other alienated beings "gonna leave this region, they'l take me with them"
I think the song is better in its original version..Greg Sage would have been just as big w/o Nirvana. Most people think Bowie covers Nirvana..so Nirvana covering this would make no difference. I think the song is about being gay in the nw.
@dahleric74 I dunno. Sage is respected across the board but I know a lot of people that picked up Wipers, Raincoats, Melvins, Bikini Kill, Meat Puppets etc records because of Kurt's interviews and cover tracks and might not have otherwise. Big nirvana fans were obsessed with everything he did, he had a hell of a lot of influence over a lot of people and was smart enough to know how much and use it to get people noticed.
Where can I download this? I would buy the album but these guys are so well hidden that its nearly impossible to get it for free, much less at a record store :(
@NeedsMoarKrishna you can order their first 3 albums as a box set (with bonus tracks) for only 17 dollars directly from greg sage himself... search for zeno records on google.
It's not true Kurt failed as a guitar player. It's the feeling he puts into the music, because of the power chords it's quite heavy, that's why the music always makes me feel good. Maybe he technically wasn't as well as other guitar players, but technically good guitar players don't always make the music 'better', it's just what you like, and I like the style of Nirvana in their early days!
@Summerloveee09 Kurt was good. His use of feedback was amazing. I'm just saying that Nirvana's cover missed the subtleties and dynamics of the original.
Saying Greg was not a good guitar player is pretty simplistic. Listen precisely to many of his notes and chords, especially on Over The Edge. He had a very unique style, which takes a lot more talent than being a super "technical" player.
I saw the Wipers numerous times in the early 80's. They were our own local band. Who knew that so many of the boys from Washington were coming down to rip off Gregs ideas.
@LWall2000 Rip off? Kurt played underground music like this, the Vaselines, velvet underground, fear, and more so his fans that liked music would find awesome bands which he liked and was influenced by like the wipers.
And don't forget, he did open up the wipers to a new generation and still continues to do so to this day.
I respect you and your opinion, but right now I hope you die slowly in a fire.
@LWall2000 who said Greg wasn't a good player ? they'd only have to listen to sinking as a stone to know better but his guitar work is great know matter what
Of course Nirvana did a better job, for those who like Nirvana better, their version is better. Cause Nirvana has an whole different style of playing than the Wipers. And I'm not a boy.
Nirvana's so much better. This version isn't bad though... but it's so freaking funny, when Nirvana covered a song, the original version just got forgotten.
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi What's wrong with people thinking Nirvana did a better job? They flat out did! It's just peoples opinion man. Just cause I think Nirvana's version is better does not take away from this version or make me a fanboy!!
@utuber377 It does make you a fan boy. Number one this was the original so there is much more creativity coming from this one. The solo is much better in this. Nirvana did not do a better job. They did a great cover that is all.
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi Well like I said it's just an opinion. I guess I just like Kurt's voice better. I dunno I like the simplicity of Nirvanas version also. I really did not except this to be any good as Kurt had some pretty shitty taste in music like the Meat Puppets! He took there 3 shitty songs and made them great. But this was a pretty damn good song on it's on. But I still like Nirvanas better. i guess it's just more my style.
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi So true. I'm a fan of Nirvana, but people who are all like "NIRVANA DOES IT BETTER" and try and diss the original song are abit silly...
@Summerloveee09 forgotten? when were the wipers even given credit or remembered in the first place? as for kurt.. he didn't make me hate the original song or look at it as less, he is actually the reason i even heard of the wipers and now im a huge fan.
I heard this (and the Wipers) for the first time today. They are amazing! Why did I wait so long to listen to them? I liked Nirvana's cover to this song and another cover (to the song Youth of America) by the Melvins. I honestly don't understand why I hadn't heard the Wipers long ago.
You are incorrect (as many have already said). Kurt Cobain was very influenced by the Wipers, and liked a mixture of both mainstream and underground music. The Wipers precede Nirvana by ten
this version is better than the nirvana version because it sounds so much darker and gives you more of a feeling that there is something darker going on
nickback just sucks hands down. its not necessarily the lyrics (though they do suck and they dont even wright em) but they sold out and have no real emotion in there songs. there just another stupid sold out band thats just in it for the money
@billyboy434 well nirvana recorded it obviously in the 90's.... so i guess sound quality was better than back on the 80's when the wipers recorded it.
@rastusthecat Dude, no they're not. Kirt listened to Guns N' Roses and Nckleback. Those bands are the true heroes of rock and they inspired everyone. Don't try 2b so ignaurant. Dumbass.
@StudlyRogers ??? are you meaning your reply for some-one else? you are either trying to get bites for a laugh or you really have no idea. Gunners are great, but it's common knowledge that Kurt HATED Axl, I have no idea who Nckleback is, sorry
@rastusthecat its okay if u dont know who nickelback is, im very envious of you for that, noone should know who they are, they really are an unimportant and terrible band
i actually knew about this band before i knew nirvana covered em. my uncle told me about them

@utuber377 It does make you a fan boy. Number one this was the original so there is much more creativity coming from this one. The solo is much better in this. Nirvana did not do a better job. They did a great cover that is all.
EyesOfTheSouthSTi 1 year ago
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi Well like I said it's just an opinion. I guess I just like Kurt's voice better. I dunno I like the simplicity of Nirvanas version also. I really did not except this to be any good as Kurt had some pretty shitty taste in music like the Meat Puppets! He took there 3 shitty songs and made them great. But this was a pretty damn good song on it's on. But I still like Nirvanas better. i guess it's just more my style.
utuber377 1 year ago
@utuber377 Nirvana took a lot of the subtlety out of the song. Compare the choruses - Kurt just plays power chords and screams all the way through.

@StudlyRodgers

Nirvana is my favorite band, and this version kicks the Nirvana cover's ass.

nickback just sucks hands down. its not necessarily the lyrics (though they do suck and they dont even wright em) but they sold out and have no real emotion in there songs. there just another stupid sold out band thats just in it for the money

The original's okay, but Nirvana's cover has more...I don't know...feeling? It just seems more real than this one, if that sounds right.
billyboy434 1 year ago
@billyboy434 well nirvana recorded it obviously in the 90's.... so i guess sound quality was better than back on the 80's when the wipers recorded it.

You guys are dumb. Nirvana and Kirt Kobain didn't cover this. They wrote it. This is just some shitty ass band that's try to get famous. Duh.

@StudlyRogers learn your musical history toser.
rastusthecat 1 year ago
@rastusthecat Dude, no they're not. Kirt listened to Guns N' Roses and Nckleback. Those bands are the true heroes of rock and they inspired everyone. Don't try 2b so ignaurant. Dumbass.
StudlyRogers 1 year ago
@StudlyRogers ??? are you meaning your reply for some-one else? you are either trying to get bites for a laugh or you really have no idea. Gunners are great, but it's common knowledge that Kurt HATED Axl, I have no idea who Nckleback is, sorry
rastusthecat 1 year ago
@rastusthecat its okay if u dont know who nickelback is, im very envious of you for that, noone should know who they are, they really are an unimportant and terrible band
