thats not very suprising really,both astra running 2.0 16v but the astra (gsi) got the ecotech engines they never had the balls that the old red top's in the (gte) had, if that astra is running the red top i would say the engine in vauxhall getting a bit tired.. i once owned a 2.0 16v calibra was well disapointed with the performance of it, then i looked into it and found that 2.0 16v ecotech had around 130bhp not the 150 bhp of the old red tops, thats why it was replaced by 2.2 16v 150 bhp

That astra is a bit heavier, than the 306, also the peugeot has something 169bhp standard,and in a race such as yours, youre always be behind unless the car behind is much more powerfull, because car behinds waits to see the car ahead pull a gap before responding so if equal power minus reaction time 1-2seconds, you will always be droping back.
