The majority of the earths population has never even HEARD about Jesus, let alone Pipers version of the gospel. Presumably John Piper thinks all of these people are headed for eternal torture. And what has Piper risked for this precious and important message? He has spent nearly his entire life in one of the richest countries in the world has ever seen in a comfortable US city. If Pipers God exists, he ought to be absolutely terrified.

Eternal torment can be justified on the grounds of Gods holiness and mans sinfullness. If you really saw what you were, how vile and sinful, you would know that there is nothing a good God could do with you except throw you into the lake of fire. It is simply what you deserve. Although God allows you to pollute the earth for a passing season He will put you in your proper place soon enough. Don't flatter yourself to much to detect or hate your sin. Christ came to save sinners.

Johnie, God is of Infinite worth, beauty, love, perfection, justice and glory. One sin against Him merits eternal punishment. Read Isaiah Chapter 6, when he saw a vision of God it became immediately obvious to him how sinful and miserable he was. Sin is horrible!! @Lionified I do not know how to read greek and hebrew, but thats what we have dictionaries and varying bible translations for. And all of these dictionaries and translations dont render everything the same way. An example on a popular Hell proof text, would be Matthew 25:46, via the Weymouth New testament,

"And these shall go away into the Punishment of the Ages, but the righteous into the Life of the Ages"

As you can see, this translation makes it harder to pull the concept of ECT from it

His "great awakening" didn't last because scaring people into heaven doesn't work. Revival sucks and cheapens God's power. Why does christianity have to be revived if it is the truth? The old testament says so it's a jewish book. Hell isn't there. Proverbs: 20:20 absolutely says nothing about hell. You are pulling that out of your ass. So if you dishonor your parents you go to hell? Where is that in the gospel hell believers preach? That might be important to say when you present the gospel. "I would say this refers to hell?" But It makes clear that you're lost without God, that you will die. But Jesus Christ did speak by far the most about hell then all of the rest of scripture together. But since we've to preach the gospel of Christ.

That's not true. Conservative Jewish theology believed strongly in the afterlife of presence with or without God. Look at the testimonies of David and Job. Your argument clearly cannot stand by interpreting Sheol to simply mean a physical grave.

You have to ask yourself why hell is hardly talked about in the old testament? It is not even in moses writings. How is it that the exodus was not warned about hell if they didn't come out of exile? Or adam and eve? There is a type of gospel in all the bible themes. Eternal destinies were not even mentioned when god condemn adam and eve. That should have been greatly amplified in that story. It is silent. Must not be important, must not be.

Dr Piper is dead-on right. What is so shameful is many 'pastors' build a church on a theology of convenience. They ask what will bring in the people. These 'pastors' are target marketing. Its just a tax free business. The general pop. wants to hear that they not need fear Hell, in fact, let's not even talk about it. Instead, lets hear how we're all heaven-bound so long as we tithe. Prosperity gospel preachers say tithe and God will multiply it 100 times in your pocket. That's just idolatry.
