And it's not just the music, it's the graphics as well! Looks at those parallax scrolling parts! The NES wasn't usually capable of handling so many backgorund layers.
A couple of things I forgot to mention. In 1991, Family Computer Magazine, or Famimaga for short, celebrated their 100th issue by announcing the Game Koubou project, in which they ask readers what they want to put into the game. It's kind of like Nintendo Power's Robot Master Design Contest, only on a much larger scale. Also, members from the 80's J-Rock band Rebbeca composed the soundtrack alongside the Konami Kukeiha Club. Don't beleive me, check out Hardcore Gaming 101's article on the game.
Here are some fun facts about this game. First of all, the FM sound really creates an ominous atmosphere in some parts of the game. Second, the monsters are creative as well as awesome-looking, especially the bosses. Third, the people who made this game would go on to form Treasure.
Play this game every1 says earthbound is underated no this game is yes the audio is impressive but play the game!!! Its amazing i want a fan translation and im willing 2 do it but i dont no ho
Earthbound is only underrated to non fan boys. Anyways it's a shame that no one would give a proper translation to this game. It's really nice to play an NES Phantasy star like RPG with FM sound in English to actually understand the story.And this game isn't as hard as most other NES RPGs but have lots of **** random battles.
Not entirely thought.It lacks a sampling channel on the VCR7 and only allows you 1 custom instrument.Not as advance as Yamaha YM2612 but can still created a cool experience.
the cool stuff with the audio stuff in neo geo or PC engine it's used both Sampling and FM synth inside de soundchip, this VRC7 do a realy good job for a famicom game.
In my opinion Tales of Phantasia have the best sound music on the snes due to using Flexible Voice Driver.Note only it allow to use voice on the snes it allow more instruments to be used.
I strongly agree!! SNES had some good sounding games, but most had muffled, funky instruments. FM had a nice sharp sound, and when programmed correctly, sounded heavenly.
Yes. I still prefer the sound of systems like the Genesis and the Neo-Geo to that of the SNES for the reasons you mentioned. Some of the better sounding SNES games sounded like they had no bass and growing up I thought it was because I had a crappy TV but it's like that even with good speakers.
Even today, the graphics and music impress me. This is amazing... Why couldn't any NES games have sound chips like this?! It reminds me of what they did to Phantasy Star's music. Only the Japanese version of that game had FM synthesis.
The NES wasn't designed to play games with special chips, on top of that, these cartridges were obscenely expensive to produce. Thank good we have emulators like FCEUX and Nestopia to play this game with!
Ah. Well, I didn't say the story was like Phantasy Star, nor the game's concept. It's just that both are JRPGs and seem to share a common theme; science fantasy. (Although I'm not sure if this has much of the fantasy part in it. Anything I'm saying is what what I picked up from watching like two videos of it. I'm drawing conclusions here.)
Either way, this seems to be the Nintendo 8-bit system's *closest* counterpart to that. Not saying it's exactly the same.
what running this game on a famiclone? huh how cut that be ,m mean despites this console is based on the noac chip wich is a incomplete and incorrect nes harware.
and manny games don,t run or don,t run eather,but this game runs well and even the external soundpins are there amezing!!!!!!!
that,s why this game runs well besides the nex sounds to loud but that,s oke.
A damn shame this was 1 of Konami's games that was never released in the U.S.. Instead of this, they gave us a WAY inferior NES RPG King's Quest V. Shame!
And it's not just the music, it's the graphics as well! Looks at those parallax scrolling parts! The NES wasn't usually capable of handling so many backgorund layers.

Many high end nes games used additional mappers to enhance the graphics. Really the NES look like shit without them :p

best sounding FC game by far.

With the SNES alot of developers chose crappy samples... Konami, and often Squaresoft chose great Snes instruments...

Same here. Realtime synthesis is better than crappy samples of realtime synthesis!
SNES' soundchip just didn't have enough RAM for the job, the sound samples were at a frequency, at best, double the bandwidth of an analogue phone.
This game looks really killer.

Earth bound tried to use sample FM music but...It's kinda crappy
SgtThom 1 year ago
@deblobwii
The SNES can actually do this things, but bottlenecks would happen and other stuff would be cut (Like SFX), so they traded quality for quantity.

@stridervm
Yeah the reduced the sampling rate from 48 kHz too 32KHz.

I think either A:Make an online pettion for the translation.Or B donate some of our money to aeon genesis to get them to translate this game.

It's nothing like Phantasy Star. Just search Lagrange Point in Japanese and use the translate option for wiki JP.

Its too bad that KONAMI only used the VRC-VII chip for this game only. They should've made more games using this chip!

You have to remember that it's advanced for the NES, but that this game was made in 1991. The SNES was already out by then.
