  • luke kellys voice would send shivers dwn ur spine!!!

  • From Dante's unrequited love for Beatrice, to the love lorn teenager of the Jedward generation, the sentiment remains the same. From the exquisite words to the sublime musical delivery, this is a rare capturing of one of the human sentiments that will enrapture, enthrall and enrage man for millenia. Watch, listen and weep.

  • Real Music.

  • There are times in life when "NOW" will generate GENIUS. I heard the studio recording and this live presentation. When you are in the moment, the truth will set you free!!!

  • I know looking at this clip that some of those in that room were transfixed by the beauty of the moment, an understanding of words and music wasn't enough, you had to feel a resonance from that banjo/voice combination that touches a place where the sun don't shine!!

  • raglan road good song

  • i find it hard to not sing along

  • Was in Galway over the weekend and met a Dutch lad in rig ceoili playin the banjo he was like Luke kellys love child

  • @legopimp69 Would you believe I know the guy you are talking about. Met him at a few house parties in Galway. Yep he brings that banjo everywhere..!

  • i wish i could play the banjo

  • luke looks real happy singing this :D

  • I have loved this song since i first heard it many many years ago. I've been watching all the video's you have uploaded, thanks for taking the time to do this, and Happy St Patrick's Day to all.

  • This is the way to sing this magnificent song!Salt of the earth stuff.

like most aussies there is an irishman up my family tree & proud of it.

  • rubberbandits,horse outside=over 6 million views

luke kelly, poetic genisus, just over 1ht,wtf is wrong with our youth..i just dont know :-(

  • @mannion178 In fairness, the studio version has nearly 1 million....but fair point all the same :)

  • @mannion178 There can be no comparison really - this was a time long before the internet, e-mail, viral campaigns etc. so comparing on youtube views holds no value. Maybe if the internet was as popular back then as it is now with younger people then it might be a different story. Rubberbandits have had their 15 mins in the spotlight, the legend of Luke will live on forever which tells the real story imo

  • it doesnt get any better than this!!

  • @birdman404

Kavanagh lived in "digs" at 19 Raglan Road, when he first came to Dublin. It is now owned by ICTU.

  • @kellyo'neill + lewisthetoz

That's Ciaran MacMathuna, a great man in Irish broadcasting and folk music collection.

  • Luke Kelly, a legend, loved you when you were here and miss you now you are gone. At least I can still listen to your fabulous voice whenever I want to. Simply, brilliant!

  • love this song rip luke kelly

  • flawless without a doubt :)

  • "IRELAND BOYS HOORAY"

  • stil the most beautiful song ive ever heard!

  • The Michael Caine lookalike is Benedict Kiely I think

  • Just awesome.

  • go on the banjo

  • makes you proud to say youre from the same country as him :)

  • Perhaps "not making hay" means he did not (to use an old fashioned term) "take advantage of the situation" and so, lost the girl to another, and perhaps regrets this. The "deep ravine" might be desire. Kavanagh would most probably have been a Roman Catholic. Whatever the words mean, it speaks as a song of regret for lost love for those who know what that means...

  • Is that Al O Donnell on guitar there?

  • Would give anything to have heard this Legend live.. RIP

  • A great recording of L K (God rest him) singing a great poem - go Google the story of Kavanagh's 'On Raglan Road', which may owe something to an older poem.

  • he does have a superb voice

  • rip luke kelly what a great talent

  • No poet like an Irish one. Makes your eyes burn, it's so beautiful.

  • the best im crying now love you luke what can be said a prayer set to music

  • thanks Mr.Kavanagh for writing this song/poem and Mr.Kelly for bringing it to life

  • Never has there been a rendition where the depth, the soul and sentiment of beautiful words are so brilliantly performed. This performance should be listed as an item of national heritage. Love you Luke. R.I.P.

  • when did he pass...

  • Ya see X-factor manufactures what they say the public wants. Luke sang and ya can take it or leave it. That was the attitude of people like him, true true musicians, not people seeking fame and fortune from a high waisted arsehole. They were there to preserve and protect peoples culture, history and traditions and did so admirably I think.

  • @leonpat2002 nice 1 leon lukes songs will still be played in 50 years time

  • @leonpat2002 "They were there to preserve and protect peoples culture". Probably one of the most intelligent comments i've ever read on youtube. Don't worry though, that other stuff won't be searched for and appreciated in 30 years time.

  • a woman that lives around the vorner from me is his cousin :)

  • what a legend

  • fucking class. x factor my hole

  • here here!!! I agree

  • One of our nations great sons. God Bless you Luke. Forever in our hearts.

  • Love it!! This is the best rendition of this wonderful song there is!!

  • There is nothing that comes close to luke.

  • mmmmmmm???

  • Paul, I couldn't agree with you more.

  • God rest you Luke your name will be remembered when the rest of us are peatbogs.

  • bitter sweet ...

  • we miss you luke u were the best

  • al o donnell on guitar...still going....just released a new album

  • I think luke is playing 3 2 5 1 roll with g, d, c, chords for this song. what do ye think, ,great song what a voice.

  • a genius.the grandaddy of bono,geldof,lynott etc...god bless

  • powerful song

  • Powerful

  • I say this every time I watch this but "WoW". A true legend without a doubt.

  • Luke Kelly was to singing what Dickens was to literature, what Mozart was to music and what De Vinci was to art......there is a beauty in his voice that i have never heard anywhere else. A genius without a shadow of a doubt.

  • well said.

  • A true hero

    Luke Kelly R.I.P

  • ni fheicfhidh muig a leithid aris

  • Seriously...What words can describe this man? I'll leave that to the Gods, true legendary genius

  • i would of loved to meet and see luke play

the best musician that ever lived :)

    legend

  • I had the privilege of seeing the Dubliners several times when I was a young man in Newry Co. Down in the town hall and the parochial hall. I will never forget hearing Luke sing this great song live to an enthralled audience.God bless you Luke.

  • Gráim thú Luke Kelly. Best Irish performer, and quite possibly the best of all. Cronáim thú. RIP

  • brilliant song sung by a legend r.i.p. luke xxx

  • I would say that the audience is just silently listening to a fantastic performance: showing respect to a great singer and a great song. In the old days people used to do that; nowadays, they have to be chattering and generally making noise.

Actually, the best way of listening to music is with your eyes closed, there are no distractions.

  • ..this obviously doesnt apply to the man with the dodgy hair at 4:04 who tries to speak to the Michael Caine lookalike....needless to say, he was ignored.

  • If you were sat in the presence of Luke himself and listening to him singing a song for the first time, (especially one like Raglan Road) would you entertain someone who was trying to yap to you during the song? lol I know I wouldn't :)

  • Do you think Luke changed the line:

"Of a deep ravine where can be seen", to "Of a deep ravine where Tandy is seen", in reference to James Npper Tandy?

  • Typo! Should read, James Napper Tandy.

  • dont know man. you tell us!

  • What is the point of your comment mufcstokesy?

Clearly, if I knew the answer I wouldn't ask the question.

I mean, if you've got nothing to say don't say it.

  • u obviously do know the answer so why ask a question when u have the answer already written.

  • hmmm, very true. He has got a pretty dam good voice, eh.

  • Yes, I wish the camera had been kept on them for a few more seconds, just to see how it played out.

  • God this song brings memories its so sad..brings a tear to the eyes and its not only me my good pal evaaa too .. RIP LUKE

  • hes THE Performer

  • I'm half temped to get 'word and tint' tattooed over my heart both because of this poem and Luke's performance... I remember it rocking me to the soles of my feet when I first heard it, and it still maks me misty. So much meaning to be found, so much tenderness.

  • god bless you luke

    your sadly missed

  • This song and Luke's rendition is so emotional. It brings, I don't really know what, a longing or yearning for something I can't put a name to, but which is so overwhelming.

  • this brings tears in you eyes

  • God rest you Luke.

  • no one can sing this like this man amazing thank you luke

  • isnt this also called dawning of the day?

  • yup the poem is called that

  • The poem (by Patrick Kavanagh) is called Raglan Road, and as a lyric it's meant to be sung to an air called Dawning of the Day.

  • I found this video in RTE archives (type in Patrick Kavanagh) it shows the beginning of this part, where Luke is introduced and Luke describes the meeting with Kavanagh. Luke is just crackling with energy - I would download it but don't know how or even if I'm allowed, but check it out, its a fine thing to see

  • There is lots of software that allows you to download vids, the most straight forward (I think) is "any video converter" Just do a google search and download it, you can keep it as a vid or change it to mp3 lol or both :)

  • thanks for the heads up. its a great find....

  • wat a man luke kelly is..!!!!!!!

  • Is someone falling asleep in the background?

  • Definately looks like it. Then he snaps awake and starts singing.

  • This is in In Bruges when Brendan Gleeson jumps off the tower!

    I cried!!

  • The most beautiful love song ever

  • His voice is one of the best but his soulful style is amazing.

  • Patrick Kavanagh Wrote That Poem

  • Luke Kelly is the best there ever was... I hope his music is never forgotten.

  • superb,breathtaking-this reaches deep real deep

  • you actualli hope the song doesnt stop

  • love his perfect diction makes the song more personal with a deeper feeling not often portrayed by many folk singers

  • this man had an incredible voice...pure genius, i think of him each time I cross Luke Kelly bridge to support the Dubs

  • It's like Luke is a totally different species from those sitting around him in this video.....

  • You hit the nail in the head with that comment. Did you ever see such a

    boring ,dead bunch of people??

They look like they"re about to topple

    over onto their faces.

    Can't figure them out.

  • Thanks - I like to think that they are just so stunned by what they are hearing that they can't move...that's what happened to me when I first saw and heard this. And of course Luke was so alive, crackling with energy, interested in everyone and everything, he'd have most people acting like zombies in comparison. Such a lovely man!

  • greatest song ever written

  • does anybody know the tabs or chords on the five string banjo for raglan rd , cant find them nowhere. Thanks

  • there the same for guitar

look up the chords for it on guitar

    and use banjo chords

    simple

  • thanks for that, will try , but then again my banjo skills arent great.

  • just pick around the chords, for whatever suits your voice!! thats all luke's doing

  • im a proud londoner and a proud englishman! but i love this so much! so much heart and passion from yer man luke!! irish songs are the nuts!! the words mean so much! irish people are great people too!

  • Fair play Londoner, nicely put

  • the definite version, no doubt. while im not envious of living in 80s ireland i cant help but to be jealous of the fact my parents generation could (and did) pop into the local and witness people the like of luke kelly & seamus ennis perform. what have we now? Damien poxy dempsey?! As the granny would say "god bless us and shave us all"

  • Showing my age but Luke sang this on the opening night of Dominic Behan's new folk club at the Dublin Castle in Camden Town in the early seventies. Luke turned up the first two weeks with Ciaron as special guests. Completely spellbinding. This is the best recording i've heard since.

  • if you look at that man singing that song ,with the greatest of ease smiling , he is doing what he was born to do. sing .and i agree with DegBracken never seen it before and never will we see it again.

  • Amazin never seen anything like this

  • Christy Moore doesnt even sing it as he has too much respect for this version..

  • i cant understand why anybody else would try and sing this song .
