From Dante's unrequited love for Beatrice, to the love lorn teenager of the Jedward generation, the sentiment remains the same. From the exquisite words to the sublime musical delivery, this is a rare capturing of one of the human sentiments that will enrapture, enthrall and enrage man for millenia. Watch, listen and weep.
There are times in life when "NOW" will generate GENIUS. I heard the studio recording and this live presentation. When you are in the moment, the truth will set you free!!!
I know looking at this clip that some of those in that room were transfixed by the beauty of the moment, an understanding of words and music wasn't enough, you had to feel a resonance from that banjo/voice combination that touches a place where the sun don't shine!!
I have loved this song since i first heard it many many years ago. I've been watching all the video's you have uploaded, thanks for taking the time to do this, and Happy St Patrick's Day to all.
@mannion178 There can be no comparison really - this was a time long before the internet, e-mail, viral campaigns etc. so comparing on youtube views holds no value. Maybe if the internet was as popular back then as it is now with younger people then it might be a different story. Rubberbandits have had their 15 mins in the spotlight, the legend of Luke will live on forever which tells the real story imo
@mannion178 There can be no comparison really - this was a time long before the internet, e-mail, etc. so comparing on youtube views holds no value. Rubberbandits have had their 15 mins in the spotlight, the legend of Luke will live on forever which tells the real story imo
Everytime I watch this, I am so so blown away...I love Luke, such an amazing voice, man, personality, performer, stops me dead in me tracks every time, helps me to understand and appreciate the beauty in the world.....
picasso has the ceiling in that chapel, ali had frazier jets had the colts in 69. red sox had ted williams .and luke kelly had raglan road his masterpiece
Luke Kelly, a legend, loved you when you were here and miss you now you are gone. At least I can still listen to your fabulous voice whenever I want to. Simply, brilliant!
Perhaps "not making hay" means he did not (to use an old fashioned term) "take advantage of the situation" and so, lost the girl to another, and perhaps regrets this. The "deep ravine" might be desire. Kavanagh would most probably have been a Roman Catholic. Whatever the words mean, it speaks as a song of regret for lost love for those who know what that means...
A great recording of L K (God rest him) singing a great poem - go Google the story of Kavanagh's 'On Raglan Road', which may owe something to an older poem.
Upon the of death of Patrick Kavanagh, the great poet and writer of this song, a wreath of roses in the shape of an "H" arrived. It was sent by lady of the poem , 23 years after their meeting.
There is no better performance than this. There never will be. Ever. You cannot den that this is brilliance at it's best. I get chills every time I watch this.
Never has there been a rendition where the depth, the soul and sentiment of beautiful words are so brilliantly performed. This performance should be listed as an item of national heritage. Love you Luke. R.I.P.
Ya see X-factor manufactures what they say the public wants. Luke sang and ya can take it or leave it. That was the attitude of people like him, true true musicians, not people seeking fame and fortune from a high waisted arsehole. They were there to preserve and protect peoples culture, history and traditions and did so admirably I think.
@leonpat2002 "They were there to preserve and protect peoples culture". Probably one of the most intelligent comments i've ever read on youtube. Don't worry though, that other stuff won't be searched for and appreciated in 30 years time.
Luke Kelly was to singing what Dickens was to literature, what Mozart was to music and what De Vinci was to art......there is a beauty in his voice that i have never heard anywhere else. A genius without a shadow of a doubt.
I had the privilege of seeing the Dubliners several times when I was a young man in Newry Co. Down in the town hall and the parochial hall. I will never forget hearing Luke sing this great song live to an enthralled audience.God bless you Luke.
I would say that the audience is just silently listening to a fantastic performance: showing respect to a great singer and a great song. In the old days people used to do that; nowadays, they have to be chattering and generally making noise.
Actually, the best way of listening to music is with your eyes closed, there are no distractions.
..this obviously doesnt apply to the man with the dodgy hair at 4:04 who tries to speak to the Michael Caine lookalike....needless to say, he was ignored.
If you were sat in the presence of Luke himself and listening to him singing a song for the first time, (especially one like Raglan Road) would you entertain someone who was trying to yap to you during the song? lol I know I wouldn't :)
I'm half temped to get 'word and tint' tattooed over my heart both because of this poem and Luke's performance... I remember it rocking me to the soles of my feet when I first heard it, and it still maks me misty. So much meaning to be found, so much tenderness.
This song and Luke's rendition is so emotional. It brings, I don't really know what, a longing or yearning for something I can't put a name to, but which is so overwhelming.
I found this video in RTE archives (type in Patrick Kavanagh) it shows the beginning of this part, where Luke is introduced and Luke describes the meeting with Kavanagh. Luke is just crackling with energy - I would download it but don't know how or even if I'm allowed, but check it out, its a fine thing to see
There is lots of software that allows you to download vids, the most straight forward (I think) is "any video converter" Just do a google search and download it, you can keep it as a vid or change it to mp3 lol or both :)
Thanks - I like to think that they are just so stunned by what they are hearing that they can't move...that's what happened to me when I first saw and heard this. And of course Luke was so alive, crackling with energy, interested in everyone and everything, he'd have most people acting like zombies in comparison. Such a lovely man!
im a proud londoner and a proud englishman! but i love this so much! so much heart and passion from yer man luke!! irish songs are the nuts!! the words mean so much! irish people are great people too!
the definite version, no doubt. while im not envious of living in 80s ireland i cant help but to be jealous of the fact my parents generation could (and did) pop into the local and witness people the like of luke kelly & seamus ennis perform. what have we now? Damien poxy dempsey?! As the granny would say "god bless us and shave us all"
