Watched Serenity back in 2006. Just discovered Firefly (2011). Brilliant! This deserves a new series before the cast are too old, or simply with other projects. Keep hoping - needs money! Watch the black.
Jayne - throughout the series and near the end of the film, there are flickers of good in him. I'd like complete redemption and for him to become a good guy, because Adam Baldwin is cool; River - lots of potential character development, plus with Wash's unfortunate demise, it seemed at the end of the film she finally had a purpose as the ship's new pilot.
There's more reasons, I wrote a shedload down last night and forgot to save the document.
@rabbitspliff I can understand your thoughts on this well... but I do see it different myself :) Serenity 2 would be a very different movie (The setting is just not the same anymore... there are still things that aren't 100% clear... but the "black" "void" feel of some people (like river) is also gone. I just can't imagine a 2nd movie at all. (But im not Joss so thats not my job ;) ) As for a 2nd season? If I had the money it would allready have been made long ago. Starting where episode 14 left
@rabbitspliff It has to keep going slow... thats what it was all about. Normal life... not action... Dealing with REAL problems and not slaughtering masses of aliens or whatever :D Thats only for sundays as everyone knows! hehe... So anyway... Firefly season 2 and + will probably not come... (at least not with the same cast, or setting) Its just been to long I guess... Yeah FOX blew it... but I still don't get how a person could even CONSIDER working with-for-along side FOX at all! Money...ok...
@rabbitspliff But come on.... We all know what they do... and what Ru. Mu. stands for... and FOX news is doing... I just don't get why anyone even bothers with them! Its like buying cars from Hitler... ok... your JUST buying cars... but COME ON!!!! :D :D :D Its reeeeeeealllllllly hard for me to accept Joss Whedons pitch to Fox in the first place... Am I alone in this? (I don't understand Matt Gr. either ... and many others...)
Reasons I'd want to see a sequel: The fallout after the signal weakened the Alliance's regime, how would things pan out in the 'verse; What would happen between Mal and Inara now she seems keener on staying on serenity (also, being a companion may be harder in a 'verse fractured by aforementioned fallout - just a thought). Goddamn, so much to write, such a low character limit.
Now that I've finally managed to get over Wash's death, I honestly wish there'd be a sequel of some sort. I think after having 1 movie, it'd be good to stick to that format rather than going back to tv (which would be less likely anyway), but It'd have to be a movie for the fans, not some populist generic box office compromise that both underwhelms generic movie-goers and frustrates fans.
I want to see more about the real reason behind River's gifts. Two by two hands of blue. The men wearing the blue gloves. Apparently it was always supposed to be about the biggest company in the universe Blue Sun. Jayne is seen even wearing a Blue Sun t-shirt in the show.
@1Pandaking Yep the brownish tan shirt when she grabbed the chef's knife and attacked him in the episode they went to Ariel and robbed the drug vault of the hospital.
Just started watching these on dvd- they're absolutely great. Unfortunately it's getting on since they came out however- would need some explaining how all the crew have aged 5 years...
@hamsterminator They can put the new movie 5 years after... that wouldn't be such a problem, however the story is more or less finished so i don't think they can make any good with dragging it.
A message to all fellow Browncoats: WE NEED ANOTHER SEASON OF FIREFLY OR A SEQUEL TO SERENITY OR EVEN BOTH! SO DO EVERTHING YOU CAN TO HELP TO MAKE SURE EITHER OF THESE THINGS HAPPENS!!!
face it, its been three damn years since this news came up, if the wanted to make another firefly, movie or show, it would have been set in motion long ago. i love the show and the movie, i really do, but it sounded to me that joss whedon just wanted the fans to buy the special edition, to make more money for him. i know, sounds cruel, but it looks that way to me : /
any new news on serinity 2? i guess if there was, we would above heard something by now... if there is a serenity 2, i will miss wash... his acting was a scene stealing in my opinion, and a cool character, maybe not as badass as zoe, or mal, but cool, nonetheless...
@Jshaw71 hopefully they will find a way to bring him back either in dreams or the way that mal survived when he was shot in the episode when the engine breaks.
@92JLee hopefully, but he was killed for a reason, whatever that was, mal was shot in the side iirc, not a fatal wound, wash however, took a spike through the chest, and was dead as soon as it happened... no coming back from that... sadly... but if they find a way it would be great...
@Jshaw71@92JLee Thats true. I think i'd prefer Firefly season 2 over Serenity 2. It could be based between S1 and Serenity so wash could still be there! Even though since he has done iRobot, my guess is he charges more for acting, which might be out of the budget.
@92JLee season 2 is sadly not a possibility imo, been off the air for too long i guess a second serenity movie will do, but there's also the comic books, but it was a limited run sadly...
@XKittenOfDoomX only 2 characters that we really knew died... one of them was old so his time was coming... but the other was a surprise in the end... but for mr. universe it wasnt probably that much of an upset for the firefly/serenity fans
Let Joss Whedon have the freedom to make his vision of Fire Fly and not some Pencil neck at FOX'S vision. Joss has said that he has lots more adventures for the crew of Fire Fly Well I say let him. Fire Fly is amazing, I want to see more of Joss Whedon's vision and more of the Stories he has for Fire Fly. Fox made Joss rush and cram Fire Fly, we want More!!!
Why not a prequel? Wouldnt it be cool to see how they all came together? How they were all living separate lives, and then they all group up. Plus wash and book could be in it. Really, I want to know what Jayne was doing before he hooked up with the crew!
I agree with LizXLemon. If there were a second movie it might ruin the magic of what has already been created. I think Joss Whedon should create another movie that is just as awesome! Or at least the fans should come together and create a tv show.
I don't really want any more firefly. I think it would ruin the magic of the seires. Yeah i'd like to see the episodes from the first seires that were never released but another seires/film?? Firefly without Wash and Book. It just wouldn't be the same.
Well we'll never get more Firefly. Know why? Cause Joss is a big retard that would rather invent a totally uninteresting new series called Doll House with an uninteresting storyline and characters. =/ He'd rather try to recreate a retarded Buffy-franchise than work on a beautiful master piece like Firefly. -sigh-
@Tess1061 more likely, its a legal thing. Fox owns "Firefly", Universal owns "Serenity" and Joss owns the intellectual property. To sum it up, it's pretty much all Fox's fault for being retarded back in '01 when they thought it was a good idea to screw with Joss' script and not advertise the show at all... then blame him for low ratings.
@Tess1061 I'm as big a fan of Serenity/Firefly as anyone but I don't think they really left much room for a sequel at the end of the Serenity movie. They could have written it more open ended if they wanted to but I assume since Joss didn't then it must have been because he had no intention of ever doing a sequel.
@rojamey I'm not asking for a sequel, per-say. But perhaps to at least finish the first season of Firefly.. There are so many episodes we got suckered out of. Like that one that Alan said that focused all around Wash. And one that explains Inara's big secret.. -flails- and stuff like that. I just want to see that stuff. I want to see the episode when she LEAVES Serenity and what is said between her and Mal. Ya know? Just stuff like that, that leads up to the movie. O_o;
@rojamey I agree, but if they wanted to give it true closure, Serenity would have been destroyed at some point in a dramitc explosion. I'm pretty sure of that.
Why has no-one yet seen sense. All those Disney type films churned out on a conveyor belt. Anything new or innovative overlooked. LIFE SUCKS IN TINSELTOWN!!!! Fight the good fight Joss and crew!!!!!
It should not always be about the fkn movie. we deserve entertainment and serenity is the best out there. when you have something that could provide us with what we want, you should go ahead and provide us that. or let someone else do that. everyone say with me....fuck fox... fuck em to hell.
I recently bought the series and Serenity both on Blu Ray. I was familiar with Firefly but never got the time to watch it. I'm in love with the show now and was enthralled with the film. I wholeheartedly await the chance to revisit this universe.
Actually I would say that the reason Firefly was cancelled was because it was on Fox, rather than production costs. That's what happens to good shows on Fox.
Such a shame that Serenity 2 never happened. Doubtful it ever would after so much time. Still, it's Joss. Anything could happen.
It just didn't make a FORTUNE at the box office and only had good CD sales.
A large reason crap shoes are picked up and good ones like Firefly are dropped is production costs - Firefly was pretty expensive as it used a lot of CG and special effects.
Also, many of the Firefly crew are busy on other tv and film projects.
You would think though with all the cash Buffy and Angel brought in, Fox could have bankrolled them a bit longer.
@thorgilt Yeah the main reason is probably the other people's schedules.. I mean alan tudyk was on dollhouse (dunno if that's still goin), nathan on castle, summer's doin stuff.. if there ever is a sequel it will be because they are all in a little break and joss pops the question, then they all say, to hell! let's do it!
Yeah I agree, I don't ever remember seeing this on tv. I found out about the movie through netflix and then discovered the show. Great series, sucks it got cut short :(
1. They didn't market it well. I didn't recall seeing any trailers for this movie and wasn't aware that it was even out.
2. Firefly should have been back on TV in reruns even tho it was canceled before the movie came out. It could have been ran over the course of a few nights as 2 hour mini-series in anticipation of the movie.
3. Aside from that the movie was brilliant, unfortunately I wasn't a fan till after everything had been out for a while.
@Haloreznor99 It's all about the suits and what they want on TV and movie screens. Unfortunately, many of the suits are fickle idiots who know nothing about decent sci-fi. They won't take a gamble and therefore, never sanctioned any sort of promotion for the film.
When arseholes like that run the industry, it's no wonder people like Joss Whedon almost quit with exasperation. The only language these pricks speak is money.
A couple of characters were killed in the first one including (spoiler alert) Wash. couldn't bring him back could they? Anyway top film and series pity it never ran for longer
I have pretty much been a Joss Whedon fan from the start. But I don't live in America so no TV series of his has ever aired here (except for re-runs of Buffy). So I import all his DVD series from America. I only discovered Serenity a couple of years ago and really got into Firefly! I LOVE the show, I just didn't know all of this stuff was going on with it! BRING FIREFLY BACK!
I watched Serenity and then decided to check it out on Wikipedia. There I discovered that there was this series FIREFLY. I watched it all the episodes (even the original pilot episode that FOX banned because they said Mal was too dark) and fell in love with it. Then I discovered that they had dropped the whole damned series! The FOX people need to start looking at the forums and boards about Firefly and realise what a huge damned error they've made! It's up to us Browncoats to get it back!
@DieChavScum and some sort of strategy game based in the war before firefly! The alliance vs the brown coats, based around starwars empire at war style engine but more freedom like the C&C series - you could have heros such as mal and zoe to fight in the wars. Would be amazing!
I love firefly and Serenity fuckin' Fox just had 2 take it off the air. oh please please make 2 Serenity there are a lot of fans that would be very happy with that.
@LizXLemon Hell Ya! Bring it back like they did Star Trek! And can you throw in a Star wars episode 7 while ur at it? :) Jk, but ya, this series rocked!
I still can't believe Fox decided not to air the two hour pilot (until the end of the series)where all of the characters are introduced because it was "too slow" Looking at it now, I can only imagine how Joss must have been tearing his hair out given that it was not slow and how it forced him to repeat plot lines and fill in the backstory that was perfectly delineated in the pilot. I'm a huge Whedon fan and even I had a hard time getting into the series until about the 4th aired episode. FuckFox
If Stargate can make series after series I don't know why more Firefly movies can't be made. Make it direct to dvd, I don't care. The series never really relied on ultra expensive special effects anyway. Just great writing and great characters.
because stargate is really what fox is all about whereas firefly/serenity is very anti-astablishment. Stargate has simple good vs evil plotlines with no moral queries just lots of action. Firefly has lots more dialouge and much less action.
Fox is republican and firefly is very much liberal in its messages and values. Therefore stargate continues on with its new series and firefly gets hampered and binned at every turn.
Stargate was not on Fox, that's why it got 10 seasons 4 movies and 2 spin-offs. Face it, Firefly probably would've done just as well on nearly any other network, it was just a bad idea to put the show on Fox. Also, I think the Stargate writers are on record for being Firefly fans and wishing Firefly had gotten 10 seasons and multiple movies as well. Also, because no other network replaces good shows with dumb reality shows as much as Fox.
I know for a while SciFi (now Syfy wtf?) would run Firefly marathons and I think they did well there. Probably should have been there in the first place.
I love serenity, but what's the point of the Character "Wash" supporting a sequel? He DIED remember? They had a whole funeral and everything...unless they do something like a prequel...
I dont' know about you guys, but I'm so willing to start a fanbase online series of Firefly... I miss the show...I liked the movie, I need closure!!!!
i JUST heard bout this show last week, i HATE science fiction. saw all the episodes and the movie over 2 days and think this franchise is outstanding. EXTREAMLY well written. what happened to it was a crime and serenity was near perfect. i hope this happens. im buyin this sum bittch on blu-ray next week
a seconed firefly film would be the best film ever the series was awesome the film is still the greatest film ever and is always funny now just need to buy collectors edtion to get a sequal
A combination of factors, most of which the Fox Network could have corrected - showing an episodic drama out of sequence, scheduling it in the 'death slot' ( prime time Friday night) when many people go out instead of stay home and watch TV. It was also frequently preempted by Major League Baseball. It was promoted as a comedy rather than a drama, western, science fiction or even the next thing from the man who created 'Buffy'. I really hope somebody got fired over it.
Because for some weird reason, the show didn't get enough viewings...even though anyone who's ever watched it has thought it was great. It was on Fox and they cancelled it because of the low viewings. It should have been on Sci-Fi Channel, then it would have done well. Yes, it's is a shame.
The character's were retardedly fake. Joss can't write for shit except for immature, pre-to-high school level one-liners for obviously gay characters (Cough, Spike, Xander, that other goof that was screwing buffy half way through, cough, cough) I see people talk big about this movie, and the series - I am left to laugh. Why?
If FOX can produce umpteen useless seasons of 24, recognizing that it will make them money... They obviously feel the same way we should all about Serenity. Trash.
you are a gutterslut of a woman. Preferences have no truth value. So for you to argue that something is trash only expresses your own view and can't be applied to other people. So you are being completely useless, except for making me take the time to show you how much you fail.
no Book, no Wash, no Mr. Universe...as much as i'd love a sequel i'm not sure how good it could be. i was bummed that Book had such a small role in Serenity. somethings are better left as is, and in this case i think season1 of Firefly plus Serenity is perfection.
Mr Universe didn't have a role in the original show, and his character served its purpose for the movie. A decent writer (let alone Joss) could write a good sequel regardless of the character drops. That said, it's been two years since this video was posted and as you can clearly see: No sequel. I hate to be a downer, but I am not expecting anything Firefly related to come about ever again.
as far as the cancellation goes, I couldnt agree more, on the other hand, if this series would have been running for 10 years, and they of course had the potential, we would have ended up with a movie anway.
DAMN FOX, these idiots, still cant get over it, what a waste...
Because the film was stunted at its conception. Fans love it because its another chance to see the people we love, but we don't get to see everyone, not really. Book is virtually a non entity, Inara is jst peripheral to the events, and yet arguably those 2 are the biggest influences and what drives Mal in the series. So for fans, whilst its great to see them back, it doesn't really have the continuity to make it really feel part of the mythos. Indeed it often feels like things have been changed
Just to make it more of a movie. But here's the thing, as a movie, unless you are a scif fi fan, this film never really had the promotion it needed to garner interest of the general movie going public at the box office, and for those who did go to see it, the ones who weren't series fans were left with a lot of unanswered questions. Too many, really. Yes a lot of them were answered in the series, but plenty of people never knew about the series at all. This just came across as another sci fi
movie with a cast of veritable unknowns, with the exception of Adam Baldwin and Ron Glass. It just didn't sell itself well to the average movie goer, which is why it didn't hit the high notes in the box office. but DVD sales prove a point, that once people get into the show, it stays with them. People, pressed by friends and family who were fans, bought the dvd, and loved it, so much so that the Series got a huge resurgence of sales. If there is a Serenity 2, it would garner huge tcket sales.
It's not going to happen. At least not anytime soon. Joss is directing a new series called Dollhouse. It'll probably be awesome just like everything Joss does, but nothing will ever top Firefly. Period.
Interesting thoughts, IsaacBickerstaff, and helped me understand Mal more - so far he was the least comprehensible character to me. "The crew is the ideal" :-) that's interesting, too, and might very well be true. People generally seek to belong to a good team, or a group of really good friends, and that might be the reason why series about such groups are so popular. Yeah, I was referring to Simon, but the more I think of it the more it seems that he's kind of my ideal, not an ideal in general.
And I'm not so sure my society would think Mal's cool, because our values are different in some respects. We consider it very mean to hurt a lying man, like he does in "Shindig", or to yell at Simon because of River even though everyone knows Simon's doing everything to calm her down, like in "Safe". Here, it's considered the opposite of cool to rant about like he does. Like we would probably say "How come you can't ever keep your temper, are you a small child or what?" to someone like him.
It's perfectly possible that I thought he was meant to be kind of ideal because I watched the series here at Youtube, in English, and I'm not good at understanding spoken English. So maybe the moments he was saying something not so ideal were the moments where I had problems understanding... background noise and such. Now I got the subtitles and I'm translating them into my language, so... God knows what I'll learn about the characters now... :-)
This is also what drives the tension between him and Inara.
It isn't her profession, that's just what he projects his discomfort on. It's the fact that despite her profession she is of much higher social class than he is.
She is a prostitute, yes, but not a "whore."
She is what the old European tradition would be call a "courtesan." A "prostitute" of the COURT; and thus actually part of the aristocracy.
It is aristocracy and the hypocritical "Ideal" that he hates.
Were it not for the war he would have found his station in life as something like a head janitor at a brewery; and Zoe would be HIS boss.
Note that he did not achieve command of the ship through merit in a hierarchy; he is in command because he BOUGHT it. He's a yacht owner; and the least competent member of the crew.
It is often noted that he in many respects resembles Han Solo, this is deliberate on Wheedon's part, not as a copy, but as a CONTRAST.
What Mal essentially wants is to be Han Solo, with Zoe as his Chewy, but he lacks the competence. He owns the ship, but cannot fly or maintain it, he's just an infantry grunt.
His command "style" is because he is actually uncomfortable with and to a large extent even resents command.
He even lacks Han's ambition. Han is a smuggler because he wants to strike it rich.
Mal is combat weary (on the losing side of *Independence*) and just wants to get away and be, well, independent.
So, he isn't there to represent the Ideal (it's a criminal ship full of misfits and ne'er do wells after all. Zoe is the closest representative of the Ideal on it), so what does he represent, what is his virtue?
Unswerving loyalty to his "pack." The virtue of the infantryman. The only honor he recognizes; and disloyalty (to the PACK, not himself personally) the only sin he recognizes.
In the day to day functioning of the ship, although he commands, he is in function the ship's dog.
Actually Mal can fly serenity - at least to some degree. (it was shown in the movie and hinted at in the series) - and he is hardly the least competent member of the crew (eg Jayne - who is really only a thug - albeit a loveable one)
other than this i agree with everything you have said here
I agree with most everything you said, Isaac, but I just *HAVE* to dispute this idea that Mal would have ended up as a janitor in a brewery. Firstly, he's clever enough and (when he wants to be) charismatic enough to find a better position. But more importantly, we know he grew up on a ranch with his mother "and about forty cowhands" on Shadow. Mal would most likely have ended up running the ranch himself. And had the Idependents won the war, he could have made good money off that ranch, too.
I got the impression (given the cattle smuggling deal @ the center of the episode "Shindig") the Alliance has strict regulations on trade & transportation between worlds that began cutting into the livelihoods of the ranchers on Shadow & this was one of the reasons they wanted independence to begin with. I have always believed that if the Alliance never meddled in affairs that personally affected him, Mal would never have gone to war to begin with. If they had left well enough alone, I think
that Mal never would have left Shadow and would have stayed on the ranch. His role as a sergeant in the army likely came from the fact his ma taught him how to command those 40 cowboys, to lead by example, & he seems to be accustomed to being obeyed. Would he ever be an urbane gentleman rancher? Not likely. But a fun-loving, high-spirited cattle baron of Shadow, that I can see.
Just my opinion, but I've been thinking about this a while. (Nothing else to do with my time.) :)
I'm saying this kinda jokingly, but considering this is Joss Whedon's verse, could River be so special (not just because of the cutting into her brain) because she's actually a Slayer?
Like i said i type it with a chuckle, but it is the whedonverse and i think atleast an interesting thought.
I'd say if they're going to do a sequel, they better do it soon before all the actors become too busy, although they might be already considering Summer Glau is with the Terminator series. I hope they manage to do it though!
Won't happen, IMO. Joss crammed what would have been 7 seasons of material into two hours: two major characters die, River's psychosis is cured and her full power is revealed, Summer hooks up with Simon, Inara hooks up with Mal, they save the Universe, everyone becomes best friends, and they sail off into the sunset. All the mystery and interpersonal tensions that drove the show were resolved, because Joss thought it was his last chance to tie things up for the fans. Where do you go from there?

face it, its been three damn years since this news came up, if the wanted to make another firefly, movie or show, it would have been set in motion long ago. i love the show and the movie, i really do, but it sounded to me that joss whedon just wanted the fans to buy the special edition, to make more money for him. i know, sounds cruel, but it looks that way to me : /

any new news on serinity 2? i guess if there was, we would above heard something by now... if there is a serenity 2, i will miss wash... his acting was a scene stealing in my opinion, and a cool character, maybe not as badass as zoe, or mal, but cool, nonetheless...
Jshaw71 1 year ago
@Jshaw71 hopefully they will find a way to bring him back either in dreams or the way that mal survived when he was shot in the episode when the engine breaks.
92JLee 1 year ago
@92JLee hopefully, but he was killed for a reason, whatever that was, mal was shot in the side iirc, not a fatal wound, wash however, took a spike through the chest, and was dead as soon as it happened... no coming back from that... sadly... but if they find a way it would be great...
Jshaw71 1 year ago
@Jshaw71 @92JLee Thats true. I think i'd prefer Firefly season 2 over Serenity 2. It could be based between S1 and Serenity so wash could still be there! Even though since he has done iRobot, my guess is he charges more for acting, which might be out of the budget.
92JLee 1 year ago
@92JLee season 2 is sadly not a possibility imo, been off the air for too long i guess a second serenity movie will do, but there's also the comic books, but it was a limited run sadly...

I didn't watch Firefly until after it was on Hulu & I watched them in order.
It's a very good, no GREAT series along with Serenity.
I've since purchased the entire series & the collector's edition of Serenity.
Don't know how many fans are like me I only remember seeing one show while it was on TV. Now I'm completely hooked & would pay to see more.

No, they can pick up Firefly S02 right where it left off, with certain characters still alive and all is good. Up-thumb if you agree.

I think they should just redo the entire Serenity movie, without all the beloved characters dying...
XKittenOfDoomX 1 year ago
@XKittenOfDoomX only 2 characters that we really knew died... one of them was old so his time was coming... but the other was a surprise in the end... but for mr. universe it wasnt probably that much of an upset for the firefly/serenity fans

We Want Fire Fly BACK PLEASE PLEASE
Let Joss Whedon have the freedom to make his vision of Fire Fly and not some Pencil neck at FOX'S vision. Joss has said that he has lots more adventures for the crew of Fire Fly Well I say let him. Fire Fly is amazing, I want to see more of Joss Whedon's vision and more of the Stories he has for Fire Fly. Fox made Joss rush and cram Fire Fly, we want More!!!
1) Fire Fly, season 2 100%
2) Serenity 2 ..... yey 100%
3) More Fire Fly please

I agree with LizXLemon. If there were a second movie it might ruin the magic of what has already been created. I think Joss Whedon should create another movie that is just as awesome! Or at least the fans should come together and create a tv show.
MatrixParadise 1 year ago
I don't really want any more firefly. I think it would ruin the magic of the seires. Yeah i'd like to see the episodes from the first seires that were never released but another seires/film?? Firefly without Wash and Book. It just wouldn't be the same.
r1seagainst182 1 year ago
Well we'll never get more Firefly. Know why? Cause Joss is a big retard that would rather invent a totally uninteresting new series called Doll House with an uninteresting storyline and characters. =/ He'd rather try to recreate a retarded Buffy-franchise than work on a beautiful master piece like Firefly. -sigh-
Tess1061 1 year ago
@Tess1061 more likely, its a legal thing. Fox owns "Firefly", Universal owns "Serenity" and Joss owns the intellectual property. To sum it up, it's pretty much all Fox's fault for being retarded back in '01 when they thought it was a good idea to screw with Joss' script and not advertise the show at all... then blame him for low ratings.
criran 1 year ago
@Tess1061 I'm as big a fan of Serenity/Firefly as anyone but I don't think they really left much room for a sequel at the end of the Serenity movie. They could have written it more open ended if they wanted to but I assume since Joss didn't then it must have been because he had no intention of ever doing a sequel.
rojamey 1 year ago
@rojamey I'm not asking for a sequel, per-say. But perhaps to at least finish the first season of Firefly.. There are so many episodes we got suckered out of. Like that one that Alan said that focused all around Wash. And one that explains Inara's big secret.. -flails- and stuff like that. I just want to see that stuff. I want to see the episode when she LEAVES Serenity and what is said between her and Mal. Ya know? Just stuff like that, that leads up to the movie. O_o;
Tess1061 1 year ago
@rojamey I agree, but if they wanted to give it true closure, Serenity would have been destroyed at some point in a dramitc explosion. I'm pretty sure of that.

I recently bought the series and Serenity both on Blu Ray. I was familiar with Firefly but never got the time to watch it. I'm in love with the show now and was enthralled with the film. I wholeheartedly await the chance to revisit this universe.
cannonballkid 2 years ago
Actually I would say that the reason Firefly was cancelled was because it was on Fox, rather than production costs. That's what happens to good shows on Fox.
Such a shame that Serenity 2 never happened. Doubtful it ever would after so much time. Still, it's Joss. Anything could happen.
LeizelAU 2 years ago 3
Unfortunately, there won't be a Serenity 2.
You would think though with all the cash Buffy and Angel brought in, Fox could have bankrolled them a bit longer.
thorgilt 2 years ago
@thorgilt Yeah the main reason is probably the other people's schedules.. I mean alan tudyk was on dollhouse (dunno if that's still goin), nathan on castle, summer's doin stuff.. if there ever is a sequel it will be because they are all in a little break and joss pops the question, then they all say, to hell! let's do it!

They fucked up with Serenity in so many ways.
Haloreznor99 2 years ago 8
@Haloreznor99 It's all about the suits and what they want on TV and movie screens. Unfortunately, many of the suits are fickle idiots who know nothing about decent sci-fi. They won't take a gamble and therefore, never sanctioned any sort of promotion for the film.
When arseholes like that run the industry, it's no wonder people like Joss Whedon almost quit with exasperation. The only language these pricks speak is money.

FuckFox
chomsky88 2 years ago 5
When will Fox learn to leave things be? They messed up Futurama the same way by airing episodes out of synch and at random time slots each week.

If Stargate can make series after series I don't know why more Firefly movies can't be made. Make it direct to dvd, I don't care. The series never really relied on ultra expensive special effects anyway. Just great writing and great characters.
jtno2 2 years ago 6
because stargate is really what fox is all about whereas firefly/serenity is very anti-astablishment. Stargate has simple good vs evil plotlines with no moral queries just lots of action. Firefly has lots more dialouge and much less action.
Fox is republican and firefly is very much liberal in its messages and values. Therefore stargate continues on with its new series and firefly gets hampered and binned at every turn.
kowboykurtiz 2 years ago 6
Stargate was not on Fox, that's why it got 10 seasons 4 movies and 2 spin-offs. Face it, Firefly probably would've done just as well on nearly any other network, it was just a bad idea to put the show on Fox. Also, I think the Stargate writers are on record for being Firefly fans and wishing Firefly had gotten 10 seasons and multiple movies as well. Also, because no other network replaces good shows with dumb reality shows as much as Fox.

Mr Universe didn't have a role in the original show, and his character served its purpose for the movie. A decent writer (let alone Joss) could write a good sequel regardless of the character drops. HOW THE FUCK DID THE BOX OFFICE TURN THIS MOVIE DOWN?
Seriously this movie was so kickass on the big screen i don't see why it went bad.
Plot and synopsis was good, why the fuck was no-one watching it?
Hunkyfish20 2 years ago 3
Because the film was stunted at its conception. Fans love it because its another chance to see the people we love, but we don't get to see everyone, not really. Book is virtually a non entity, Inara is jst peripheral to the events, and yet arguably those 2 are the biggest influences and what drives Mal in the series. So for fans, whilst its great to see them back, it doesn't really have the continuity to make it really feel part of the mythos. Indeed it often feels like things have been changed
Grumftheld 2 years ago
Just to make it more of a movie. But here's the thing, as a movie, unless you are a scif fi fan, this film never really had the promotion it needed to garner interest of the general movie going public at the box office, and for those who did go to see it, the ones who weren't series fans were left with a lot of unanswered questions. Too many, really. Yes a lot of them were answered in the series, but plenty of people never knew about the series at all. This just came across as another sci fi
Grumftheld 2 years ago
movie with a cast of veritable unknowns, with the exception of Adam Baldwin and Ron Glass.

MartaEzis 3 years ago
And I'm not so sure my society would think Mal's cool, because our values are different in some respects. We consider it very mean to hurt a lying man, like he does in "Shindig", or to yell at Simon because of River even though everyone knows Simon's doing everything to calm her down, like in "Safe". Here, it's considered the opposite of cool to rant about like he does. Like we would probably say "How come you can't ever keep your temper, are you a small child or what?" to someone like him.
MartaEzis 3 years ago
It's perfectly possible that I thought he was meant to be kind of ideal because I watched the series here at Youtube, in English, and I'm not good at understanding spoken English. So maybe the moments he was saying something not so ideal were the moments where I had problems understanding... background noise and such. Now I got the subtitles and I'm translating them into my language, so... God knows what I'll learn about the characters now... :-)
MartaEzis 3 years ago
"I thought he was meant to be kind of ideal"
That would be a mistake. He is quite explicitly portrayed as far less than ideal, an anti-hero thrust into the hero role.
His former rank in the army is a major, up front, clue to his character; a sargeant, not a commissioned officer who would represent an ideal.
Low social class, uneducated, used to barking orders and having them obeyed, but not actually of command rank.
"Don't call me Sir. I ain't no officer."
IsaacBickerstaffEsq 3 years ago 2
This is also what drives the tension between him and Inara.
It isn't her profession, that's just what he projects his discomfort on. It's the fact that despite her profession she is of much higher social class than he is.
She is a prostitute, yes, but not a "whore."
She is what the old European tradition would be call a "courtesan." A "prostitute" of the COURT; and thus actually part of the aristocracy.
It is aristocracy and the hypocritical "Ideal" that he hates.
IsaacBickerstaffEsq 3 years ago 2
Were it not for the war he would have found his station in life as something like a head janitor at a brewery; and Zoe would be HIS boss.
Note that he did not achieve command of the ship through merit in a hierarchy; he is in command because he BOUGHT it. He's a yacht owner; and the least competent member of the crew.
It is often noted that he in many respects resembles Han Solo, this is deliberate on Wheedon's part, not as a copy, but as a CONTRAST.
IsaacBickerstaffEsq 3 years ago
What Mal essentially wants is to be Han Solo, with Zoe as his Chewy, but he lacks the competence. He owns the ship, but cannot fly or maintain it, he's just an infantry grunt.
His command "style" is because he is actually uncomfortable with and to a large extent even resents command.
He even lacks Han's ambition. Han is a smuggler because he wants to strike it rich.
Mal is combat weary (on the losing side of *Independence*) and just wants to get away and be, well, independent.
IsaacBickerstaffEsq 3 years ago
So, he isn't there to represent the Ideal (it's a criminal ship full of misfits and ne'er do wells after all. Zoe is the closest representative of the Ideal on it), so what does he represent, what is his virtue?
Unswerving loyalty to his "pack." The virtue of the infantryman. The only honor he recognizes; and disloyalty (to the PACK, not himself personally) the only sin he recognizes.
In the day to day functioning of the ship, although he commands, he is in function the ship's dog.
IsaacBickerstaffEsq 3 years ago
Ahhhh, now I see that the broketarded YT comment threading lead me to believe you were talking about Mal when you were talking about Simon.
Simon is the closest thing to a stereotyped character on the show, but it sure ain't as the Ideal:
It's as the spoiled by a lifetime of privilege brainiac nerd.
If you are looking for the Ideal in Firefly you will have to consider the crew as a whole.
Each represents one ASPECT of the Ideal, which is what makes them a TEAM rather than just a crew.
IsaacBickerstaffEsq 3 years ago
Actually Mal can fly serenity - at least to some degree. (it was shown in the movie and hinted at in the series) - and he is hardly the least competent member of the crew (eg Jayne - who is really only a thug - albeit a loveable one)
other than this i agree with everything you have said here
God i miss firefly
katrina4president 3 years ago 3

I miss firefly! I liked it, I just watched some episodes and it is a cute show I think!

A "Serenity II" needs to be made. Forget how, or when. It just needs to happen. End of story.

Second star from the left, straight on 'til morning... in other words, anywhere he wants.

Actually not all story lines were closed, we still don't know all of Shephard Books past or what became of the men with the hands of blue.

The Hands of Blue storyline was tied up in the comic books "Those Left Behind," and Book's story is going to be covered in the next set of comics.
