You actually need to take an 18" wooden rod or PVC pipe, and make sure that will fall all the way into the barrel with the action closed. DO NOT measure the outside of the barrel. If you go shorter than this, some three-letter agencies might come knocking.

Just a little advice I cut down my shotgun barrel and I used a pipe cutter never do this it will squeeze on the barrel to hard and after u shoot it it will make it split so I no it takes longer to cut it with a hacksaw but use the hacksaw saves alot of headaches in the long run. Great video!!

hey not to dis you but wouldnt it be a good thing just learning how to use a saw before you try cutting and then do the tripple work with a file,jiggin that hacksaw back and foward aint the way,thats why it has a longer "blade", it will get you easyer to the goal and it wont cut you and you can follow a straight line in stead of fucing up constantly ,try it the nexxt time you cut.

also it helps to cover the area of the barrel that ur cutting with painters tape, and maby even having someone else beside you to spray rem oil on the spot ur cuttn. makes it a hell of a lot quicker, and makes the barrel look tones better.

It should be noted that barrel length is measured from bolt face to the tip on 870 shotguns. If it is measured 18" from tip the the very back portion of the barrel on a 870, you just created a SBS barrel. SBS's require the NFA tax stamp.

Always give yourself an extra ~1" from boltface to tip to ensure you stay legal.

Forgot to mention, the way the ATF measure shotgun barrel lengths is by dropping an 18" dowel down the assembled/action closed shotgun barrel. If the dowel protrudes from the barrel on an non-NFA/non-title II receiver, then you may run into some trouble.
