i go to school with this guy, in fact, i live in the apartment below him, we are friends, he is an amazing person, and an amazing drummer, please respect him.
I've watched his other vids....he's a busy drummer. No pocket, no groove. Sorry guys he's not a good drummer. Watch Steve Jordan and Bernard Purdie.... Those cats are the real deal. I took me 10 yrs to realize how a great drummer plays, this kid isn't one....sorry. He will learn eventually. Prob when no one hires him for a gig. lol
Well, you have to admit, he does have some skill. To play that fast and precise takes some hard effort and a lot of practice. But i, personally, am not impressed with speed. To me, he's just the drummer version of the guitarists of Dragonforce. I can listen to his beats for about 2 minutes, but then it just starts to blur together and there's no real beat to hold onto. It's just buzz, crash, buzz, crash... too many constant rolls. Good for drum solos, but not for a song.
@drums2590 i pass for legally deaf, to the point where my doctor tells me i need hearing aids. but i dont think that i should be given sympathy points. i dont want to be treated any differently than any other drummer. neither should he.
@estronicaveron im guessing he is 17-18 the stuff he is doing is not really impressive at all im not saying he is not good or im the best drummer in the world but im 15 and i can do that stuff with somewhat of ease and its still not that impressive when i do it, if you are not a drummer this stuff will seem impressive, but in reality it isnt
Pocket and groove is the exact opposite of what this guy is doing....But since you don't know that then you will probably never understand what a real drummer is. Do you have any friends that play in a real giging band? Ask them they will tell that if a drummer played like this cat they would kick him out at the end of the first song and would take his pay. If funny to see what people think is a good drummer though lol...interesting
@fnkdrmr86 but i think this drummer was doing a drum solo, not grooving in the pocket. I'm sure this guy is able to play in the pocket, but he just chose not to
@maniacspidertrash133 Those toms are layered in so much reverb and compression that you wouldn't recognize them in real life. So, how to solve your problem? Buy yourself a recording studio, and learn to use it.
If you think you are good at something there is always an asian to prove you're not... I want to go and cry and gently stroke my drums now, telling them that everything is gonna be okay!
The latin groove wouldn't actually be played like that though. He is great but I would like to c more variety with the fills and more single pedal action.
@fnkdrmr86 and if everyone just grooved? then there would be a million of those and you would be saying: "all pocket....all groove...just another boring ass drummer, there's a million out there." I love groove, and i also respect this. drumming is not only about one style, that's why i love it so much.
it's not bad. i don't know if i'd go as far as 'ever'. there's a lot of cats out there, that have been out there for quite a while... Check out Will Kennedy for some sick @ /watch?v=TttaAPcwSkc or Professor Dicenso demonstrating sick chops, but also using SPACE in between notes (4:58-5:10) @ /watch?v=s_81IomgGEY
@fnkdrmr86 there's a ride groove that he kind of starts at 0:25, but then he quickly abandons it to show off his chops for the remainder of the solo. impressive yet boring as hell, even for a 2 minute video. so there's a reason why he's an "undiscovered drummer" lol
i think it would be even more amazing(this implies that i think it's amazing xD) if he extended it by building up to the crazy fast stuff he does... so start off with a simpley groove, then add a bassdrum here and there and a hihat opening and maybe a couple other things, then start with like a simple one or two stroke fill on the toms(for example) and then make it more complex and faster as you go on with this technique..he has the potencial to be even better( at least to make me believe that)
@elroyblackbean holy crap... i don't even come close to this guy... i probably should hgave said that i think that it could be better by doing what i said... of course i dont know, i only play for a couple years now. but you can't fool me. you knew what i meant ^^
I like how you all talk shit about his lack of groove, when he incorporates a sexy as hell latin groove in the middle. Let's see you do better than this.
he was the country's youngest person to achieve a grade 8 in drums at 11yrs old with a distinction and is now under full scholarship to study in berklee. He also endorses yamaha drums and sabian cymbals, and yet some of u talk like u got shit
Complete player.. Nice to see more of these guys versus groove-solos all the time. This cat knows theory & is in the pocket! From the lyrics of one of my favorite rap groups of the early 90s, "Bring that beat back yellowboy" Amazing! From one drummer to another...
talent wise I think this kid is great, being a drummer myself I was impressed
I watch alot of solo's and I find that groove over everything else is what grabs me and more importantly those that arnt drummers or even musicians. Dave DiCenso from two ton shoe. his solo is by far one of my favorites to both watch and listen too and if you watch it people start to clap to it, had groove, rythym, it was just perfect. all i really saw here that was mastered is speed, and for me I need more then that
@siciliano79, I hear you, but... I'm not sure a groove was even ATTEMPTED?! I'm NOT slamming this kid. (He's talented!) But I am frustrated over Modern Drummer. The magazine should change its name to Modern Drum Soloist. The next Al Jackson Jr. would go un-noticed in their supposed quest for "undiscovered talent," because of the contest focus MD *chose*. They prove again, they're more about the acrobatics of drumming, and less about the reality or purpose of the drumset as a musical instrument.
the reason i hate drum solos is that they dont really show whats actually important about playing drums; working with a band. of course, chops like this are always cool and good to have (and show off sometimes) but you will rarely ever hear this in a song. and thats what drumming's about, working together, not showing off.

Though, you can't really do Moeller until you've gotten the 2 note push pull down. From there 3, 4, etc become about the control of the bounce and the last note which you pull off of the head.
I just checked and someone uploaded that video onto Youtube. The one that covers the sticking is called "finger control." LOL...I guess there is a technical term for it after all. Well, I haven't seen this video in over 10 yrs...I forgot that's what he calls it.
Well done. Not sloppy--the timing and evenness of the strokes is clear...lotsa practice to get there and make it so smooth and even.! To the peeps saying he needs to practice pocket--I don't see how you can say he can't play in the pocket based on this vid... I bet he has great pocket ability based on his timing with the rudiments. anyway, cheers to a great drummer!! Drums, the universal language.....
