I guess the best you could do is sell back the cards try to get as much money back as possible. Though that requires a lot of effort just to play competitively.
I had a couple friends that didn't want to keep the cards, but still wanted to play in prereleases and other events, I offered to pay their entry, as long as they gave me the cards, plus whatever prize they might win. So if you make some magic friends, that may become an option.

LOL your description of MTG players is right on! I hate playing with 'those' people at times... I mean it doesn't hurt to take a shower lol.
