The only way to kill them is to use the correct magic on them. It's tough to put into words, but if you use the right magic on them, you get xp. Get them 3 times in a row, and you can get some really cool rare items. I don't bother with them much in this playthrough, but I do recall successfully doing it around the Deep Jungle parts.
Oh yea, and their "cheering" is them getting mad. Yea, I thought they cheered at first too lol
what's with the white mushroom guys? they look like they cheer for you after each successful hit, leave a present, then disappear. weird!
