  • I love this song and this is one of my favorite groups of all times.

  • The young man singing lead in this video looks like the same young man singing on the Goodman's album "Chosen" in 1982. Does he to you, and who is he?

  • i love Tims hair in this! lol

  • How old would Tim be at the time of this video?

  • Watch too Flow of Voices .... youtube.com/watch?v=4H5L-Z6SGV8

  • @MrMotoManiac70 This isn't the first lineup. I was formed in 1980. Jerry Ritchie was the only original member of the group when this was filmed in 1983. Just goes to show how much turnover there was in their first three years. Only difference between then and now is that they'd release simple table projects quickly during each lineup instead of holding out for a big project.

  • @ChristianEntertain ok thanks SO much!

  • Do you have anymore videos from this? I found one more but that's it.

  • loooovvvvvvvvvvvveeee the video btw (:

  • What year was this??

  • @ht3696 1983. This was right before Ivan Parker joined

  • This is my favourite song of gold city

  • Gotta love the hair in this time, I love this song

  • my father was the first one to bring this group to canada!

  • How old was Brian Free here..........10?

  • @dphillips81 Brian was 18 here.

  • @bfafan1 I wish he was 18 now! Haha, he has such an amazing voice!

  • how old is Tim Riley in this vid?

  • Brian was so young and cute!!! lol

  • @bfafan1 haha yea (;

  • Hey, I guess miracles still do happen....Tim has a fuller head of hair

  • wowowowowowyaaaaaaaa love it

  • WOW!!!!

  • this is was from their first live album 1982 - Brian is around 18 years old - that's how old he was when they recorded that live album! The trivia here is to name some of these guys - Tim, Brian, Garry Jones (piano) Jerry Richie (baritone and founder)... anyone else?

  • @thunderchiken The live recording was done when Jerry Richie was on lead and Ken Trussell was on baritone. This video was done when Jerry Ritchie moved to baritone and Bill Crittendon was hired at lead. Ivan Parker replaced Bill probably not too long after this.

  • Man Brian and Tim were young here! Also, I gotta agree that Tim's hair is awesome here. XD

  • I'm a brian free fan, but i dont like the 70's bam-chicka-wa-wa that was in there. Good song though.

  • what year was this? lovin the style lol...but I really do love this song!

  • GReat! Ilove this song and GoldCity!WOW!

    calebB

  • That'z when it was his real hair, lol

  • tim still sings sometimes

  • brian sure was young on here i think at this age is when i first fell in love with his singing

  • Love the song but the volume is a bit on the low side with this one, thanks for sharing.

  • I agree....wish I could hear it alittle better

  • in my white robe

  • In My Robe Of White WOW

  • Hello Momma is on the "I think i'll read it again album

  • Do you have Jerry Ritchie singing Hello Momma?

  • Do you have Jerry Ritchie singing Hello Momma?

  • Is that Tim Riley singing bass, and Brian Free singing tenor?

  • yes

  • Yes, it is. This was Brian's first opportunity to sing in a group. This was their first big hit. Since Brian has formed his own group, Tim's retirement, Ivan's solo career, and Jerry's death, Gold City just hasn't been the same. Although still good, they just haven't been able to recreate their original sound that has come to be known as one of the best in southern gospel music history. God bless them all. They have truly given us some wonderful music over the years!

  • God bless these brothers! This is real christian music, not the watered down stuff you hear today!

  • I met Gold City back in the early 80's before they "hit it big". I was about 6 or 7 years old. Not only did I fall in love with their music, but with them, as well. Jerry Ritchie and my mom became close friends. His recent passing has left a huge hole in our hearts. He will be greatly missed!!

  • Tim Riley came in at their second recording as bass which the recording was called Gold City "Sing Golden Nuggets" Their first recording was called "First Day In Heaven". I still have cassettes of those somewhere. Then We Believe, Songs of Days Gone By and I've Got A Feeling. Then before the 1982 live recording was Tenor Bob Oliver left and Brian Free was hired.

  • Then Brian Free left for a few months and was replaced by Benny Blackburn. Then Bill Crittendon left and Ivan Parker was hired. And then... Benny Blackburn left and Brian Free returned.

  • This is an early version of Gold City. However the very first version of Gold City appeared and hit the road in 1980. The members if my memory serves me correctly were Tenor Bob Oliver, Lead Jerry Ritchie, Baritone Ken Trussell and Bass Dallas Gillihand. The pianist was John Reinhardt. That was the first version. They made 5 recordings before the 1982 Live project that had the #1 hit In My Robe of White as seen on this video. I work with the man who produced it. Bill Traylor.

  • Bill Traylor also produced Cathedrals albums. He goes to my church. (Just kidding. There is a guy named Bill Traylor that goes to my church though.)

  • I realy like to hear Brian sing, and the rest of gold city , Brian sure looks young in some of them. is this the first gold city? I like these singers the best of all

  • received an email from Gold City,Jerrie Ritchie went home to be with the Lord, just after midnight yesterday,The Ritchie family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 2, beginning at 12:00 noon at the Tutor Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc. A Memorial Honor Guard Service will be held on Thursday, July 3 at 2:00pm at Cook Memorial Baptist Church in Houlka, MS.R.I.P. BRO.JERRIE.

  • Best band ever! does anyone know anything about the band members and where are they now or what they are doing today.

  • Brian Free, the tenor, has his own band, Brian Free and Assurance. I'm not sure about the rest, though.

  • Too bad they never had a studio version of this, and they never had a version with Ivan Parker.

  • Brian reminds me of Kirk Talley. In the way he stands, carrys himself.

  • Yea... That's the one and only Brian Free. It was mentioned earlier about Brian looking nervous.... If you have ever seen Brian in person, he openly admits that he wasn't a Christian when he first joined Gold City. So, I'd say that's where some of the "nervous look" comes from.

  • That would be my guess on here. He definitely is not nervous now though:) Best tenor of all time!!

  • I can't tell...Is that Brian? it sounds like him.

  • Yes, it is.

  • This is soon before they added more moving cameras in the Southern Gospel videos. If you look at most old Southern Gospel videos, most cameras are stationary, or they just move to focus on certain singer. Look at the Gaither videos, and you'll see that they have many camera angles, mostly moving.

  • this was also the 1st time or rather song that slapping the bass was used

  • Reminds me of Clarence and Cleo Clem's house...

  • The baritone and lead singers were Jerry Ritchie and Bill Crittendon. Jerry was an original member of the quartet and was the road manager for the group. Bill was with them for just a short time before Ivan Parker joined the group. During this time Ivan would have been with the Singing Americans. Bill also once sang with the Southmen Qt. from Gadsden AL, as did Tim Riley.

  • Jerry was originally lead, right? I always thought he switched when Ivan joined or shortly thereafter. I don't think I had ever heard of Bill being part of it unless he was on their live album with this song and I forgot the name. :) It has been a long time since I heard that lp.

  • Jerry was originally the lead singer and was still singing lead on their breakout live album that you mentioned... "Atlanta Live" I think it was (good stuff too). I think that the baritone on that album was Ken Trussle(sp), with Tim and Brian doing the lows and highs... Tim very low and Brian very high. I don't think Bill was there long enough to record, unless it was on a budget/table project, which a lot of groups did during that time. But I'm thinking that he didn't even do that with them.

  • Sorry thequartetman, I didn't answer your other question... Jerry switched to baritone when Bill came on board but kept his few feature leads. Bill was there such a very short time and really wasn't featured a lot, but when Ivan came in they really expanded the leads for him and that's when the quartet started to get lots of notice. That continued when Mike LeFevre replaced Jerry and they moved their operations to Gadsden from Dahlonega GA... and as they say, the rest is history.

  • Thanks. That lp is probably what put in my mind he was lead. It has been years since I heard it. I do remember the name Ken Trussell now. It is nice to know that he changed to baritone when the position opened and they were already looking for a lead before Jerry came in. I presume that is correct unless they just thought Jerry was a better lead. :)

  • Sorry, I meant this as a reply to TampaparrotHead and I meant Bill on the last two lines. :)

  • Thanks for sharing this old time gospel video. Brian Free(far left) is so young, and Tim Riley (far right) has so much hair (ha, ha, ha, I'm sure he'd appreciate that) Who are the baritone and tenor?

  • Look in the box to the right of the video. Click on the word (more) under About This Video for a list of the members.

  • Thanks, although the "more" box didn't really differentiate between who was singing bartione and lead. However, "Tampaparrotthead" apparently gave me the answer. Thanks, Tampaparrotthead.

  • I misunderstood your question. Sorry. Glad you got your answer.

  • Wow! Brian's hair must be made of plastic! He looks like a Ken doll!

  • Which one is Tim? They all look too young for me to tell :(

  • Tim's standing on the right. Brian's on the left. The lead and baritone are in the middle.

  • Brian looks like he is really nervious

  • He looks YOUNG that's for sure!

  • He still does! lol

    Aaron Swain

  • This was really a hoot seeing Brian so young. Thanks for posting!!!!!

  • this is about a year after the group was put together! best group in southern gospel music hands down! back then and still today!

  • Great classic video. This must be right before Ivan Parker and Mike Lefevre joined. haha it does look like name tags!

  • I've never seen this version of Gold City. This is a great vid and a great song of course. But I have one question... Are they wearing name tags?!

  • Yeah, it does look like they're wearing name tags doesn't it? That's awesome! Thanks for posting another great oldie, volscot!
