So then doesn't it make back pressure almost essential? to prevent exhaust gasses from going back into the intake and prevent the new charge of air just go right out the tail pipe? J.W.
@1PARADOXXX With Variable timing on the exhaust side, the engine can allow overlap and some of the exhaust is drawn back into the cylinder to be burnt in the next powerstroke, thus achieving the same effect as an EGR valve without the extra tubing and weight.. Less weight helps the fuel economy. ;)
@Rico8458 superior engine for for fuel economy and thats it..... try saying that after you get smoked by lancers gtrs bmws, mustangs or even civics, if you mod your shit, they can mod their shit too either way, stock or tuned your still not gonna be as fast
@Azn69Knight you guys make me laugh. Most of the cars you mentioned have this tech in there engines anyway so there all the same. BMW, Honda, Mitsubishi, Ford AND Toyota all have comp' controlled variable timing on there engines, its nothing new anymore. It does increase power AND economy, thats what its supposed to do, thats why everyone uses it
i expect it was not very good, it will allow too much flame to flow out of the combustion chamber, may cause pre-ignited, loose of power, that why the BMW E90 320Si had removed the valvetronic (in N45b20s engine) and just use double vanos to defeat HONDA latest VTEC in FIA-WTCC.
the exhaust valve close early to trap some expanded flame/hot air in combustion chamber, then with intake valve open early allow the flame/hot air (flame/hot air is lower pressure than cooler air when finish burning, create higher vacuum pressure) suck the cold air into the cylinder by the vacuum pressure, the main objective was to improve the vacuum pressure in the combustion chamber during sucktion cycle.
actually part of the exhaust contain unburn fuel, CO, NOx (nitrogen oxide),
those chemical combusted with air and fuel ratio will reacts like plenty of NOS injection. NOS aka nitrous oxide -> nitrogen oxide, was preduce in some quantities in every air/fuel mixture combustion, the nitrogen in air react with oxigen.,
ok im a student mechanic, so is the engine using the pressure on the exhaust to draw in a new charge, so then the chamber has a rich full charge ready for compression/ignition, thus achieveing better combustion (more power, cleaner emmissions)?
It overlaps the valve-timing to take back some of the exhaust gas(already burn but sometimes not completely) and mix it with less volume of incoming air/fuel(because exhaust gas already occupied some volume of the cylinder) to save gas and burns residual fuel completely. Less volume of air means less fuel is used. Thus saves gas and cleaner emission. Note that it didn't have an Exhaust Gas Recirculator(EGR) while most other cars do. It gets performance by turning it valve overlap the other way.
nice ;). I just love VVT-i's they rock. U should have heard, if u just broom the Toyota Yaris, it sounds like a fuckin sports car when the rpm drops. =D
From the video you can see when it stops and circles the valve area, you can see that it can time it properly making the engine more effcient without sacrificing power.
vtec engagement is different from vvt. that has to do with cam lifting.

Like any engine, the cam blocks off the intake valve when the chamber is combusting.

Why not just use an EGR valve?

u can do that by degreeing the fucking cams, u dont need no VVTI? that shit sounds so nooby

@davidzzz94 yeah but it wont be constantly variable throughout the rev range.

VVT-I is the superior engine on earth. all others are inferior and sub standard.

it was similiar to BMW VANOS,
the exhaust valve close early to trap some expanded flame/hot air in combustion chamber, then with intake valve open early allow the flame/hot air (flame/hot air is lower pressure than cooler air when finish burning, create higher vacuum pressure) suck the cold air into the cylinder by the vacuum pressure, the main objective was to improve the vacuum pressure in the combustion chamber during sucktion cycle.

The piston head has the valve groove in it. So technically it's not.

Because piston stroke : camshalf is 2:1.
