this could have been avoided 20 years after this crash COSTER had a crash in Cali caused by the same reason engineer using drugs and running a red light at an open switch. on the railroad red means STOP shut your engine down and wait this guy parked his power on AMTRAK property and caused a derailment it could have been avoided.
i love how Amtrak says they have record ridership? oh ya whens the last time they had 650 people on one train? 20-30yrs ago? i doubt more than 150 people ride any Amtrak train at any given time. even on the long distance trains barely have 200 on a train designed to handle 450
These are not parked Railroad Cars, they were 3 Conrail LOCOMOTIVES, the engineer ran a red signal, fouled the amtrak train. The engineer was under the influance of drugs
OH MY GOD! I AM A RAILFAN, I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT RAILWAY RULES BUT I KNOW THAT UR NOT SUPPOSED TO PAK UR FRIGGIN ENGINES ON THE FRIGGIN MAIN LINE!!! DUMB ASSES!
as far as i know only 2 accidents have occured on the northeast corridor since the PRR electirifed it. 1) the Congressional crash at Frankford Junction, and this one. well 3 if u count the federal express wreck.
Caused by the idiot locomotivengineer Ricky Lynn Gates who was smoking marijuana? Brakeman, Edward "Butch" Cromwell was also responsible for catching Gates missing signals. Both should be in prison. Killed 16 innocent people.
@metroliner89 well the part they forget to tell you is that the engineer of the other train was drunk and ran several signals and plowed into the train X_X
The engineer of the Conrail locomotive set was instructed not to move his power onto the main but he did with 100mph of AEM7 and six passengers right behind him...
he later admitted to being under the influence of Marijuana and served time in prison
@Amtrak1194 he should leaving a switch open, moving a train when the signal was red,and DUI. this accident was happened to the Coast Star Accident in San Joe California except the train stalled and a UP train smashed into him head on.
im scared of NY subways .-. since its underground and water is above it i saw water leaking .... from the roof .. and the train goes super fast! like its scary .
there should be protocols for small towns like these, usually they build the emergency hospitals and personal around the towns population..but if large transport pass through towns infrastructure the towns should be required to have a large military helicopter of some sort that can handle hundreds of people for transport to a larger facility. Food for though
@firemanupton i think it was something like 16 people dead. it was the worst in the us for a while, until 1993, when the sunset limited derailed off of that bridge
My friend was a USCG rescue swimmer who reponded on that call. became a die hard railfan after that lol. He saw a car start to sink and though it was like quiksand
This accident is the reason we have drug tests on the railroad now. Conrail engineer Ricky Gates was high and ran his three Conrail engines into the path of this Amtrak train. He was charged and served a prison sentence for this accident.
heres one thing that the engineer should know. If he sees a train in front of him slam on the e brake and evacuate all the people to the back of the train as fast as posible
The engineer in the locomotive would have to run all the way through the engine compartment to get to the coaches to warn the passengers. There would be no time for him to do so.
This train was also moving very fast as that line is a high speed rail line
and one thing people ALWAYS forget: Trains can't stop quickly!
Uhh that would also be impossible since the Locomotive on the Amtrak train is called an AEM-7. they have cabs on both sides and even If you tried to reach the Amfleet coaches. there is no door to acess to the coaches other than the doors on the sides of the loco.
He came around a blind corner and had no time to do anything, he can't go through all the cars in 3 seconds, he can't even get out of that type of locomotive if it is moving.
Because its not really a residential area. Just because their are houses next to the tracks does not mean it was residential. There werent any crossings so it was not very likely for an accident. It was Amtraks high speed rail. It was ConRails fault.
That line is rated for 105 mph because it's straight track. Freights normally do not use the line, and it also turns out the engineer of the Conrail train was drunk and fouled the line. The engineer served four years in prison.
Yes, it was 3 Conrail locomotives, that ran a stop signal and slid thru a closed switch AND STOPPED directly in the path of a hi-speed Amtrak train. The idiot Gates Conrail engineer should have just kept on going, instead of trying to stop. It would have GREATLY reduced causualties. Hell, he was getting fired/going to jail/going somewhere else later on. why try to save face at that point???
When the engineer operating the Conrail locomotives ran through the switch, he went from traveling 60mph to almost 25 mph because the 3rd unit derailed and got hung up on the track. The Amtrak commuter was traveling at 105 mph when it went into full emergency stop seeing the locomotives in its path. Besides the Conrail crew smoking marijuana, the locomotives had Positive Train Control System to run on high-speed track and were disabled by the crew to muffle the warning sounds and alarms.
I might have used the word wrong, but I mean the number of units you have to take in order to get your National License for EMT. Or, in the case of someone who already has it, a unit added to the list that you have to learn to stay current.
They divide the training into units: like Bleeding Control, treating for shock, IO insertion, starting an I.V, Airway Management, etc.
This is one of those Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) scenes.
They didn't have CISD in 1987, when I began my career as an EMT. I don't remember when they began, b/c I was off my job from 1990 to 1993. When I returned, all of a sudden there were stress debriefings for incidents like the one in this segment.
I was off work again, from 2001 to 2004, and returned to find Terrorism and WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) added to our curriculum.
Their resources arent exactly comparable to tax funded depts. They might even cover half the county, and this scene might have been some distance from the firehouse.
I just noticed at 1:50, one pane of glass on the windshield of the AEM-7 (the second unit #900, I think) is not broken, despite all the devastation. I couldn't remember if safety glass was in use on locomotives in 1987.
Heart-wrenching tragedy. Neither these 16 victims, nor their families, deserved this! One positive result was the eventual mandatory drug testing of rail and transit workers. I was a transit union steward, but supported it. It angered me that employees repairing or operating vehicles that transported the public were arrogantly selfish enough to put innocent lives in danger by getting high or drunk. Some, of course, convinced themselves that they easily "handle their high" and perform at 100%.
i was 3 when it happened, and we were driving over the bridge over top of the tracks and my mom and stepdad heard the crash, and stopped the car and ran down to help. My great-grandma stayed with me in the car. All i remember is that it was in the local news for many days. there used to be a road through there, but after the accident, they closed part of the road and made it a dead end. I used to have friends that lived on the street by where it happened.
Anyone who finds shows about this sort of disaster senarios (for instance train crashes, plane crashes, gas explosions, building collapses, etc) interesting should check out the shows "Seconds from Disaster" and "Air Emergency". They air on the National Geographic Channel and are somewhat similar to this except more in depth exploring the personal stories as well as the technical "what went wrong" part of things. I find those shows very interesting, so thought I'd pass that suggestion along.
Today tracks are owned by CSX, except 1 owned by Amtrak. Norfolk Southern owns tracks in that go west in Virginia and south states. VRE and MARC commuter rail use the tracks.
