The Maritime and Coastguard Agency says coastguards and lifeboats are sent out needlessly. In 2010 the agency recorded 1,500 flare incidents, of which 500 were believed to be false alarms caused by lanterns, while the CAA says they also pose danger to landing aircraft.

Crops are also at risk; last summer in Oxfordshire, a blaze from a lantern destroyed 2.5 hectares of barley. Litter is also a problem, said the NFU: "The people releasing lanterns wouldn't dream of dumping rubbish, but that's what is happening."

Civil Aviation Authority wants a ban on the sale of the sky lanterns, which are paper and wire hot air balloons fuelled by a naked flame. "People have no control where they land," said Nick von Westenholz, government affairs adviser for the NFU. Dorset and Somerset fire service said it had seen a sharp increase in lantern fires in the past year. Farmers say cows suffer stomach damage from eating the wire of fallen lanterns.

EXELLENT but be careful of regulations of uncontrolled "fires" LOVE IT! About a yr-one-half ago some dudes used road flares attached with string to mylar baloon back East and sent them aloft! Went NATIONAL with national news claiming UFOS over the Eastern Seaboard and the "wing-nuts" on the SCIFI Channel "invesitgated" it and claimed it was "proof" of "not from this planet"! LOL!

haha i remember these balloons, on year ago when i whas on an party in an crowded neighberhood a friend of me saw something in the sky, so wel all get outside and some even filmed it, they tought it where ufo`s cus after a few seconds there where like 500 of those yelow orbs, after an minute the whole neighberhood was outside looking at the orbs and even the police camed cus more than 500 people called the police and sayd that we where under attack of aliens :P

I tried another way of doing this. It used a cut up wire hanger to make an X and I used one of those rectangle logstarters for a fuel source...and a trash bag. I tried several times but...never got it off the ground. Came close though.Whats the deal with that? Does it need to be cold outside?

I fly small planes and the sky may look like it is calm, But it is actually like an ocean full of violent currents. under the right conditions, Thermals and downdrafts have lifted and dropped me well over 2000 feet per minute.
