  • That's what you call acting and SANGING! Gentleman: What's the name of your group? Deena (Sheryl Lee Ralph): The Dream-ettes The Dream-Ettes! Effie (Jennifer Holiday): Y'all I can't wear this wig,,,this dress doesn't fit me!! Lorrell (Loretta Divine): You got the same Wig I got? Effie: Yeah Lorrell: You got the same dress I got? Effie: Yeah Lorrell: Then SHUT UP! Announcer: Ladies and Gentlemen straight from Chicago the Creamettes. Effie: It's the Dreamettes the Dreamettes!
  • I sure would like to see this on DVD in its entirety.

  • I wish they'd release this on CD, I've always wanted to see the original cast. I did see the traveling case in SF in I think the late 80's = my Dad took me as a suprise and I FREAKED when i realized I was at "Dreamgirls" :)

  • I like how the movie stayed true to these songs..they're absolutely timeless

  • I like how the movie stayed true to these songs

  • I don't think this is Jennifer Holiday.

  • @gtb224 It's her this is the original...Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph & Loretta Devine

  • Loving this. Post some more if you can.

  • This role was originally written for Nell Carter, but when Nell go the call from Hollywood to star in of all things, A SOAP OPERA, she left NYC and made it to Hollywood. Joe Papp and Michael Bennett looked all over, but it wasn't until one of the co-stars of A Chorus Line flew down to Texas to hear this unknown sing in a performance. I can't remember the actor's name, but he paid for Jennifer's Plane ticket to audition for Your Arms Are Too Short to Box with God. SHe was discovered in that show.

  • Amazing! Thanks for posting this :)

  • Personally I think they recreated this into a movie really well, and this Jennifer Hudson didn't disappoint. And it's hard to stand up to the original. Go her! And go Jennifer Holiday for being awesome!

  • how do u watch the actual play?

  • how the hell did you get this video? it's awesome

  • Michael Jackson, after seeing the show, said it was the best sing he had ever seen.

  • Holliday is freakin' amazing at acting and singing. She's a real Broadway role model.

  • jhud's version is higher... but this one is a damn classic..

  • Yall dont hear Lorretta Divine!

  • I love Loretta!! I hear her!! She is a true soprano!!

  • No Lorrell has yet to equal her. No one can hit the notes she hit without straining and no casting director has bothered to try find one who could. Loretta Devine- unmatched.

  • Like the newer one better

  • Well ... think about this... if you dont like this ... then you cant liek the new one... coz with out this ... there would be no new one :D

  • old one as fabulous!!!

  • I Have the whole Cadillac Car scene

  • where and with who

  • of course thats jennifer no other woman has a voice like that.

  • i love dreamgirls it was groundbreaking did u see that set lol i love it

  • definently the only number in the show that represents what the dreams should have been (cause there is no other number with effie singing lead)

  • is this really jennfer holiday

  • Oh yes, this is she. There is no other voice like that.

  • THANKS!

  • The energy is SO MUCH more tangible onstage! My first "date" was with a young lady who wanted to go see this at Masonic Temple. I took my paper route money and bought two tickets. I had to be about 9 at the time (play came to Detroit in 85 or 86). I WILL NEVER FORGET THIS SHOW!

  • Weird how the audience laughs as the "Titanic" line. I don't know if they were thinking it had to do with her weight or that feeling like a ship that killed a buch of passengers was funny to have in a song.

I just think it's a good line about how a person feels about someone they want to go away but still can't get rid of.

That fits when she later sings to Curtis about not leaving her. He wants her to leave but he still feels something for her.

  • I think it's be cause she says "Tatanic" to make it rhyme withe Satanic.

  • OK that makes sense. Guess I over analyzed that. lol

  • SING!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dreamgirls was Jennifer Holliday's second show on Broadway. In 1980 she was featured in Your Arms Too Short to Box with God and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her performance.
