I would LOVE to take a time machine back to this interview and play John the butter commercial he did on my laptop. He'd probably jump out the window!
What a shame that most of the comments here focus on the redheaded stepchild of punk appearing at the start of this clip instead of on the unpretentious class act that follows.
do yourself a favor all of you and stop talking about the japanese like fucking colonialists. after ww2 they had americans all over themselves. do you really think that with all that perfection they are capable of they couldnt teach a reporter to speak english? do you really think the guy doesnt understand what johnny means? he is just being polite. and he thinks before he speaks. that are things that western media simply lack.
I saw the Clash when I was 14 in NY,it was amazing,I'm so glad I was lucky enough to have seen them. Plus it was a really small gig..with about 35 people. Love the Clash, classic band that sounds as fresh and timeless now as they did when they were first formed.
John Lydon confuses me. To just general people he seems to be lovely, yet to interviewers he seems to come across as quite arrogant. On interviews lately he seems lovely too. Then I see him in tweed advertising country life and I wonder what happened...
@CaseyCain85 Nothing confusing. It's was always just an "act" with John in old interviews and as he grew older he got sick of putting on that "act". John has always just been about what is going to benefit him personally. He knows the angry, disenchanted young man bit isn't gonna work these days.
Fuck led zeppelin! those prissy upper class wannabes who stole black peoples music! they literally stole songs! They aren't even creative and they are no different from commercial pop, songs about sex and women. Led Zeppelin is garbage!
@queenstreetwestpunk "Annalisa" ...I remember a reviewer saying it sounded like Zeppelin , which makes NO sense , whatsoever. Obviously ,Lydon liked Led Zeppelin. His opening theme song on the PIL '86 tour was "Kashmir". By the mid - 80's , bands like Led Zeppelin and Kiss were gaining Punk cred , anyway. I did'nt go along with it , personally, but bands like Redd Kross and Flaming Lips were making it safe to like more Mainstream Rock and Punk at the same time.
i gotta admit im not a fan :^( its easy 2 criticise n thats all rotten does in all his interviews 'this is crap, u are crap blah blah blah'..i admire the movement, just not the ppl who spawned it.
Johnny comes off as such a jerk. It might be difficult for some people, possibly even including him, to see past that. We don't love him because he can be an a-hole. He was touched by something very special in those years with the Pistols and the early PiL.That genius still stands and can be seen clearly even thirty and more years later. The bad behavior and schtick we tolerated because we had to.
Reminds me a bit of Amy Winehouse, except Johnny never fell into the die young trap.
@gamesplaystation1 Why is he a dick? I don't know. He's a pop star. Lucky as all fuck to make a living at it, having people he will never know or meet, spend+money+time+effort to buy his product, see him perform etc. Media outlets actually seek to interview him. And at least twice, the person doing the interview....english wasn't their 1st language.
@mikentosh ...So they were being very polite...trying to speak english as well as they could, and conduct the interview....And he was a fucking dick to them when there was no need. One japanese guy didn't even know Lydon was being a rude dickhead to him, 'cause he didn't know english well enough. @mikentosh Just shut up please. You may not like him but he wasnt a dick he was honest. If you dont like him its your problem, just dont say he is a dick. He is...punk
@Stratery Being an asshole has nothing to do with Punk Rock, or being a Punk. What a fucking cliche! @mikentosh Totally agree. & since we have Paul Simonon being interviewed here, we might as well point out that the Clash, unlike Lydon, never made a career out of being assholes. In everything I've seen/heard of with them, they were never rude or disrespectful to anyone. Joe Strummer was known for being a genuinely nice guy who made everyone feel like a friend. Lydon meanwhile seems like he'd go off on you if you so much as looked at him the wrong way. How cool, being an unlikeable douche bag!
@iwantcompletecontrol An old friend had David J (Bauhas, Love+Rockets) play at his wedding...my buddy said he spoke to him about music/favorite bands etc. and David J said that Joe Strummer was one of the most genuinely nicest people he'd ever met! It was nice to hear.

hey that's not cool to talk about japanese like that. it's your fans for fuck's sake, they bought your goddamn reccords.. anyway. respect for that guy though
Actually in this interview, Lydon is just being a Dick. .He has no understanding of Asia, Japan, Confucianism or any of their cultural values so he continues responding as though the man with the mic is an English Reporter with the same values, attitudes, life experiences and points of view. He is railing against nothing, or more aptly, the wrong concept.
Oh yeah, "re-organizing the pistols would be evil, and wrong".
Got a bigger boat now ya dodgy old bender? haha!
Yeah yeah, that was then this is now - pity you couldn't write or sing, and do anything worthwhile since. Gotta love that he advertises butter, and iffy pop advertises insurance whatever? Oh yeah, choose to love that you 'consumers'
Everyone, I have made a video about boy bands and the music buisness and talking about underground music. You TUbe have tried to dissable the sound but I put the text in the "Description" box under the screen. Please come and check it out! "Boy Band Video" it's called.

Paul Simonon is totally right about how it feels like you must go to college for one hundred years to learn guitar! Punk music had a great influence on non-technical but brilliant bands like Joy Division, for example. I think Punk has given confidence to people who felt they could never become a Jimi Hendrix but had very creative ideas and raw energy.
What a shame that most of the comments here focus on the redheaded stepchild of punk appearing at the start of this clip instead of on the unpretentious class act that follows
read my comment, I'm not talking about the quality of the music of either band, I'm talking about the marked contrast in personal character between the two people being interviewed. as for which band has better songs, that is purely a matter of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. johnny supports this view in his TV commercial: he doesn't say country life butter IS the best; he says he THINKS it tastes the best...
well, at least johnny rotten always spoke the truth...um, at least HE himself always said that he spoke the truth, usu. right before he ever said anything controversial that he would later contradict thru his own actions. Ex. his PIL butter funding! Too bad his countless mindless minions don't realize that johnny rotten is a persona, not a person. john lydon is a crafty entertainer & businessman who made a good career out of the contradictary righteous indignation of johnny rotten
"Next question, please!" . He has used that sentence in every interview for over 34 years. It shows how pissed off he is when the journalist is asking lame questions. John Lydon FTW!
Paul Simonon just seems like a genuine, down-to-Earth guy.. what's not to love? <3 and from the video... Johnny seems really narciscistic and arrogant. The Clash's music speak more to me than the sex pistols.. The Clash lyrics really get me thinking. They sang about hardships and injustice... the difference between the Clash and the Sex Pistols? The Clash were intelligent.
A message to gamer4life444~Hello, I need to correct my response to your comment a month ago about me posting many posts on this page. When I said, "I had fond memories of the Pistols" that was not true. I meant when my cousin was socializing with me. He was letting me hear the Pistols. I couldn't stand them at the time... I still don't like the lyrics. I love the man John Lydon though.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i love the sex pistols but this second guy from the clash makes me sick his band is fuckin shit should i stay or should i go? that's pop not punk and this asshole is trying to make the fact of him not knwoing how to play a great think like this fucken inability made him better then the best band in the world zeppelin
«after six months of practice i went on stage» and there's the result a shitty band just look at him what a nerd
This mutherfucker has'nt changed.. he haas always been a fuckwit but I think he is great,,, pure muthurfucking entertainment and the pistols were the godfathers of punk... Unfortunately public image are pure fuckin shite in every context,, absolute crap.....
HAHA I thought Simonon Was the Japenese Interviewer who had a name similar to an icon of mine XD HAHAHA I even imagined it in an aggressive Japanese accent.
john lydon is a pretty inteligent person all though some would think hes just a punk from a punk rock band of the 70s far from it he spoke the truth and didnt give a shit what anyone thinks i respect him 100% for that yet as a kid i couldnt stand all this punk rock stuff im now 42 and think john is brilliant
If he really was a bit intelligent then he maybe could consider that people hate agressive behaviour like Lydon does. You have normal IQ and emotional IQ. On the Emot. IQ level he scores like zero. Even when he was a bit older he still liked it to make people angry bout him. He must be very frustrated or had a personal mental dissease i guess. Still i can enjoy sometimes the way people like Lydon live. It is his life :)
@redfenderguy Funny, it's the opposite with me - as a kid I loved what he was doing, and I loved almost everything he said...now? He's still pretty sharp, granted, but he's left most of his brains behind - talks a load of crap mostly.
To: gamer4life444: You don't understand, I was a teen when The Pistols where Touring & creating records. They are a part of my fond memories. YouTube seems to like anyone's comment, no limit...It seems people verbally attacking Lydon. People shouldn't cridtize so much.
@APlike2skate ~callm down! You all need to get saved. What's this attitude? I don't care what consequences may happen. Don't let the devil control you. Jesus said, "I am the way and truth and Life no one comes to the father but by Me [Jesus Christ of Nazaeth-Galilee Israel. That is found in the book of John 14: 6 in the Bible. Amen.
@blondehannah100 I was just pointing that out. I like the both of them but John could have more of an upbeat attitude. I admire that he truely belives in his ideas. He could express it in a happier manner though.
I'm only 15 now but I wish I was around in the years of The Clash, The Pistols and The Ramones I'd love to have seen them live! I like Sid Vicious and all but hes not much of an idol for me as a Bass player. He kinda sucked... lol
@gamer4life444 It was never about the music. So they could have got a bloke with no fingers on bass, and the message would still be the same, none of them were brilliant at what they did, but together the music and the message was awesome.
@gamer4life444 Hello, I tuned into Public Image Ltd. last month. the music among others contributed to music healing relief I was listening to it for that. I saw a little thumbnail of Depeche mode interviewed by Julie Brown~music scene TV host from the '80's. Their intermission of music on their show was Public Image. I decided to seek them out on youtube.
@gamer4life444 Dear Gamer~I am not an expert at observing about these artists...I have been listening to music a long time...since I was very young. Look at the bigger scope...music has caused barriers of many people of different backrounds to work with one another. Each person is different...and every artist has thier own chosen way to express themselves. My cousin was a fan of the Pistols. He would expose me to music that was diverse to me.
@gamer4life444 Dear Gamer~you don't have to "Idolize" anyone. Follow Jesus Christ. He is the real deal. To me music heals. I have been praying for musicians to get saved. Last month I investagated the info on John Lydon. I knew some people thot of John Lydon as trash, I guess...He is loud, cusses, doesn't conform to the pop scene but was not the whole point of his radicalness? I listened to him a lot to try and understand him. I did not get him until I realized his situation in London.
John Lydon found ways to be himself and express what he felt by choosing his own style...perhaps he was being a leader to other people his age to break out of the strict culture around him. He cut off his hair, dyed it green or orange, wore ragged clothes...how fun...
I finally, "got" the beat & Love this "Punk" beat...It took 19 years...what I really like about John Lydon is he is "Honest". He prefers what ever he sees fit. The world couldn't handle this because they are either on drugs washing their brains out or they are strict high class fuddy duddies who can't accept young people who alarming them to reality...
All John Lydon wanted was to be himself...who he really was as a person. There are too many cultures in Britain that don't accept the differences of another. To be in Ireland you have to be Irish. To be in London you have to conform to their politix.
I just realized John Lydon's rebellion was similar to my rebellion that I felt when I was a preteen. My family tried to press me in to "their" version of a mold they thot I should be. There was a lot of tension with my parent who was trying to force me into his conformingism. Haven't we all had the same trial & tribulation?
John Lydon rebelled against the conformingism in London. The upper class people in his school rejected anyone who was different then them. People were made to feel awkward if you did not conform.
I understand John Lydon. He lived in London in the poor side of town. Other English neighbors harassed him for being with Jamaicans. There was racism in London against the Jamaicans & the Irish. Was he an outcast?
In 1977 I couldn't stand the "Sex Pistols" or John Lydon's tuneless singing. Now, I Love him. I even think he is handsome in his own way. He had such a cute face in an 1978 interview in London.
As for John Lydon, yes, in a way I would prefer him not to use "F" cursing word, but John was still on a journey to improvement. Don't cast stones at him. He who is perfect cast the 1st stone!
Johnny's why everyone thinks punks gotta be assholes and spit on everyone around them. Hell, Simonon's at least got a reason to be rude if he ever is. Speaking your mind is one thing-- just being a blatant asshole because you CAN is another.
To all you people, who said you don't like John or whatever blahh blahh. Fuck you, like you could ever be as cool as him, fuckers. -_-

@GEETARS3
read my comment, I'm not talking about the quality of the music of either band, I'm talking about the marked contrast in personal character between the two people being interviewed. as for which band has better songs, that is purely a matter of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. johnny supports this view in his TV commercial: he doesn't say country life butter IS the best; he says he THINKS it tastes the best...
SuperAkebono 5 months ago
@SuperAkebono
Well, he said the butter commercial funded the PIL tour, he problem doesnt make much money anymore because kids are downloading his records.

well, at least johnny rotten always spoke the truth...um, at least HE himself always said that he spoke the truth, usu. right before he ever said anything controversial that he would later contradict thru his own actions. Ex. his PIL butter funding! Too bad his countless mindless minions don't realize that johnny rotten is a persona, not a person. john lydon is a crafty entertainer & businessman who made a good career out of the contradictary righteous indignation of johnny rotten

Paul Simonon is the epitome of class. John Lydon is a twat. It shows in this film.

I love the man John Lydon though.

john lydon is a pretty inteligent person all though some would think hes just a punk from a punk rock band of the 70s far from it he spoke the truth and didnt give a shit what anyone thinks i respect him 100% for that yet as a kid i couldnt stand all this punk rock stuff im now 42 and think john is brilliant
redfenderguy 1 year ago 70
@redfenderguy
It is his life :)
petrusaloisius 1 year ago
@redfenderguy Funny, it's the opposite with me - as a kid I loved what he was doing, and I loved almost everything he said...now? He's still pretty sharp, granted, but he's left most of his brains behind - talks a load of crap mostly.

Jesus said, "I am the way and truth and Life no one comes to the father but by Me [Jesus Christ of Nazaeth-Galilee Israel. That is found in the book of John 14: 6 in the Bible. Amen.
blondehannah100 1 year ago
@blondehannah100 I was just pointing that out. I like the both of them but John could have more of an upbeat attitude. I admire that he truely belives in his ideas. He could express it in a happier manner though.
I'm only 15 now but I wish I was around in the years of The Clash, The Pistols and The Ramones I'd love to have seen them live! I like Sid Vicious and all but hes not much of an idol for me as a Bass player. He kinda sucked... lol
gamer4life444 1 year ago
@gamer4life444 It was never about the music. So they could have got a bloke with no fingers on bass, and the message would still be the same, none of them were brilliant at what they did, but together the music and the message was awesome.

@gamer4life444 Hello, I tuned into Public Image Ltd. last month. the music among others contributed to music healing relief I was listening to it for that. I saw a little thumbnail of Depeche mode interviewed by Julie Brown~music scene TV host from the '80's. Their intermission of music on their show was Public Image. I decided to seek them out on youtube.
blondehannah100 1 year ago
@gamer4life444 Dear Gamer~I am not an expert at observing about these artists...I have been listening to music a long time...since I was very young. Look at the bigger scope...music has caused barriers of many people of different backrounds to work with one another. Each person is different...and every artist has thier own chosen way to express themselves. My cousin was a fan of the Pistols. He would expose me to music that was diverse to me.
blondehannah100 1 year ago
@gamer4life444 Dear Gamer~you don't have to "Idolize" anyone. Follow Jesus Christ. He is the real deal. To me music heals. I have been praying for musicians to get saved. Last month I investagated the info on John Lydon. I knew some people thot of John Lydon as trash, I guess...He is loud, cusses, doesn't conform to the pop scene but was not the whole point of his radicalness? I listened to him a lot to try and understand him. I did not get him until I realized his situation in London.
blondehannah100 1 year ago
John Lydon found ways to be himself and express what he felt by choosing his own style...perhaps he was being a leader to other people his age to break out of the strict culture around him. He cut off his hair, dyed it green or orange, wore ragged clothes...how fun...
blondehannah100 1 year ago
@blondehannah100 do you relize you have posted the last 10 comments... in a row?
gamer4life444 1 year ago
I finally, "got" the beat & Love this "Punk" beat...It took 19 years...what I really like about John Lydon is he is "Honest". He prefers what ever he sees fit. The world couldn't handle this because they are either on drugs washing their brains out or they are strict high class fuddy duddies who can't accept young people who alarming them to reality...
blondehannah100 1 year ago
All John Lydon wanted was to be himself...who he really was as a person. There are too many cultures in Britain that don't accept the differences of another. To be in Ireland you have to be Irish. To be in London you have to conform to their politix.
blondehannah100 1 year ago
I just realized John Lydon's rebellion was similar to my rebellion that I felt when I was a preteen. My family tried to press me in to "their" version of a mold they thot I should be. There was a lot of tension with my parent who was trying to force me into his conformingism. Haven't we all had the same trial & tribulation?
blondehannah100 1 year ago
John Lydon rebelled against the conformingism in London. The upper class people in his school rejected anyone who was different then them. People were made to feel awkward if you did not conform.
blondehannah100 1 year ago
I understand John Lydon. He lived in London in the poor side of town. Other English neighbors harassed him for being with Jamaicans. There was racism in London against the Jamaicans & the Irish. Was he an outcast?
blondehannah100 1 year ago
In 1977 I couldn't stand the "Sex Pistols" or John Lydon's tuneless singing. Now, I Love him. I even think he is handsome in his own way. He had such a cute face in an 1978 interview in London.
