  • The Sound of Silence

  • We could have had cars like this before the cars we have now, right Tesla?

  • i want this can. i would get a speaker and play loud engine noises in the car.

    like a boss

  • I wonder if EVs will be popular here in Japan, while power plants are closed, and the lack of power resource has been restricting our everyday lives. But I am still looking forward to the days will come when the business scene will totally change in the automobile field. I like hearing news about Tesla Mortors.

  • Rich people can save some money

  • Best car in the world!

    :-)

  • TESLA SUCKS, worst most unreliable cars ever! Motor overheat to fast, transmission always fails, subpar build quality, yet they still feel their "cars" are worth 6 figures! I hope the BBC prolongs this case untill Tesla runs out of money.

  • @technology4you1 what horrible hopes, the car brings great promise to solve a lot of problems and bring great enjoyment, and have unparalleled reliability.Sounds like you watched too much of that bullshit Top Gear show, they seem so biased and they're probably paid off by the oil companies or some shit.

  • @technology4you1 The Tesla roadster is direct drive you moron, it doesn't have a transmission..

  • Kudos to the chumps at Tesla for taking the petty route, bringing a suit against Top Gear for what THEY consider libel. The most ironic part is that this ridiculous accusation demeans their name more than Top Gear ever could have. Google "Tesla Top Gear libel" and find Top Gear's response for the real story

  • so nice! so silent... I imagine some accidents might come up as pedestrians won't be used to such a silent car. Might reduce pedestrians awareness when it starts being used a lot more but damn this car is awesome!

  • @Shiqna1 wow, assume much?! :) I guess I should be home cooking and cleaning right? LOL

  • whine whine whine. bloody hell....

  • talk about impractical....lets see how it does say in the snow?! and roads that are not flat as well....it'll be useless. and it looks like a Porsche but not the quality is not as good and neither is the exterior....*YAWN*

  • fuckin stunning!!!!

  • incadescent light?? i can't believe

  • Try Asian women **busizz4me.info**

  • viel zu leise die wagen, wie soll man da als fussgänger oder fahrradfahrer noch was mitbekommen !?!?!?!

  • @hurius yay for dumbass questions...

  • Test drove it today. In my country cars are heavily taxed for environmental reasons.. This one avoids all that so infact its one of the more reasonably priced sportscars you can get in my country.

  • I won a drive with it, and I drove it today. The Professor of the ETH said that there will be another model for 60,000 swiss francs.

  • I like that swoosh sound it makes.

  • nice

  • Top end? Hardly. They handle like a big boat and break all the time. They accelerate fast... which is the only thing good about it, and all the company shows....

  • at first i thought my speakers were spoilt or something, ITS SO QUIET! haha

  • Their business model is to have started at the top end then to work their way down.

MODEL S is to be half the price of a Roadster then the next car half again.

  • i like it better quiet.. music will sound better in your car when you are running it.

  • It´s incredible and an irony if I think about "Tesla" as a trademark. NIkola Tesla died without a single coin in his pocket and pass away with just a coat on.

Nowadays, we talk about green life, save the planet and all that, but history is written by all those who organize and decide about other people life, such as the governments. So, Tesla talked about this 90 years ago, but it was more convenient to burn fuel. This is not a big step for humankind. In that case, it´s a late step.

  • @CAR73LOS Oh excuse me, I did not kow this is the MoveOn.org website LOL

  • I love how quiet it is

  • hmmm they should make a software for these cars to replicate v8 engine sounds when you accelerate : P muajajaja

  • @rgaxio I saw this thing on TV where they install a speaker on the bottom of a car and connect it to the gas pedal then there is a screen on the inside where you can select what model of car you want your car to sound like. Some of the options were like a Ferrari f430, Ford Mustang GT500, Lamborghini Murcielago and stuff like that.

  • @WestonHyder You mean the "momentum pedal" or the "go forward pedal" because you technically can't call it a gas pedal because you are not technically giving the engine any gas. Im not trying to be a jerk or anything, just giving some food for though.

  • So strange to see a video of a good looking car with no sound of the motor, nice shit...

  • great video! ive added a video response which i shot last week. I was accompanying a friend of mine who had borrowed a Tesla Roadster Signature 250 for the weekend. It was a great experience, the acceleration this car has in phenomenal, stunning even. And that combined with no sound and the utter sensation of speed, magnificent!!

  • I miss the noise of combustion engine

  • is it true that all of these companies cars are all electric?

  • wold it sound anything if the weels veren't touching the road?

  • ....i guess i better buy a shit load of google and apple stock....

  • i just saw this thing today and was like wtf is that said it looked like a porsche mixed with a loutus

  • Pity, things this appliance. A publicity stunt? It is very sad.

  • front end reminds me of the Evora and NSX a little bit

  • Cars sound so weird without engine sounds..

  • @wieditleestisleip doesn't have engines you dick!!!!!!!

  • @Nekosys I know.. o.O

  • All the batteries and motor magnets ar mad in china. That way you can sell your country out and beat the oil barons down wuhooo!!!

  • @brain69x and what isn't made in China?? I'm betting half of the things you own.

  • All the batteries and motor magnets ar mad in china. That way you can sell your country out and beat the oil barons down wuhooo!!!

  • of course they wouldn't let a full electric car sell for around 30k in the years that tesla came out . why? because it would revolutionize gasoline cars.. and automotive manufacturers would do something about it.. that's why its 100k so only wealthy could buy it, so general public won't rouin the amounts of fuel bought from overseas fuel sellers.. that's why the inventor of water car was mourdered so his car won't revolutionize the fuel industry.

  • @voyrnj Right ...and all the battery pattents are bought by the petrol companies

  • Tesla is coming out with an all electric 50k car, the Model S in 2012.

The oil industry can't stop the inevitable move to more efficient all electric or hybrid cars.

  • i want the s model sedan

  • bring down the price!

  • SEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Did you used to hang out @ the chicken coop in Newport ??about 2:00 on tuesdays!!

  • This car is completely silent, I really love the ss7 sound of the motor.

  • This is the Car of the Future RIGHT NOW!.

Finally an Electric car that performs like a piston engine car. And this company has Daimler Benz as a partner. Also Elon Musk also has a multi-billion contract producing rockets for NASA. The first private company producing rockets. His baby is Tesla Motors though, so this is gonna happen. A non-polluting vehicle that be recharged at home just by plugging in and has a 300 mile radius. And no noise pollution as well. Can't wait to buy the Tesla Sedan

  • Isnt wikipedia gr8?!

  • i just look at it from a economical stand point, in Europe for example it costs about 2.3 times more to fill up your car that it does in the US

I'm sure hopefully in the future well have cheaper more affordable models , something in the range of 15-20k,

  • I was looking at their website and they are working on a 7 passenger car that starts around 50k.

That is amazing for vehicles of this quality. Can't wait, in a few years they will finally have some vehicles in my price.

  • @insightllc fuck you with ur stupid story nobody care

  • Not likely...

  • @liniculus That is for the base car 160 miles (250 km) or it's best version for 77k for 300 miles (480 km).

  • 16 hours

  • how long does it take to recharge?

  • I was reading on their website, and I saw that they have a 45 minute quick charge (whatever that means)

  • are they safe?

  • God, what a beautiful car.

anyone who hates electric cars is a douchebag

  • Cant wait until the average man can afford them and they go 400 miles on a charge, AND charge in under 1 hour...

  • this is what a ninja drives.

  • haha, best comment ever

  • do they come with different mirrors?

  • So silent lol

  • Thats looks sooo fantastic!! Love it!! Finally a fast good-looking car in which we can have fun!! I hope I can try one !! :D

  • I saw one of these on the freeway, and it looked so nice!!!

  • This my friend is the future

  • nope you are wrong ^^ its the present! They are in production ^^

  • if we could harness the hot air from the majority of the posters here, for power generation, to eventually eliminate the fossil fuel dependency, we could very easily be the leaders we once were....

too bad our "vessel" , has so much dead weight to prevent any much needed linear growth.

  • Beautiful cars and if you go on their website everything looks great. Can't wait till they go public. This will be a paradigm shift.

  • Loud pipes save lifes!

  • lol scarymarket's comments

    and then

    dead silence [cricket chirping]

    no one replies whatsoever lol

yes i know hes obviously retarded no need to waste any time on him.

  • Scarymarket, is English your second language? It makes everything you post laughable.

  • Cars that don't use gas are socialist? WTF?

  • yes. Tesla is socialist car for fans of darwinism. All hail socialist of America. U.S consitution is dead.

  • bullshit... europe is also social and we are living better than ever... financial crysis? no way!

  • Socialist and Red flags all over the world.

The world is made up 96% socialism.

  • what are you talking about? don't just blackmail everything... communismn is dead, so don't worry. being social is nothing bad...

  • Yeah there is no engine sound.

At first let's try to input electricity use to NORMAL cars and save the oil for me sports cars :)

  • Only half a sports car. No engine sound.

Safety hazard noon can hear it coming!!!

  • Its alot safer to have quiet cars than it is to continue pumping co2 into the air and acting like we dont know what the fuck is happening.

Get use to it, In 10 years every car will be as silent as these.

  • Thats only a hazzard for idiots who don't look left and right before crossing!! and if you buy one and you realy feel that bad about it play a CD witha V8 engine on loud

  • the created of tesla is most likely get bankrupted company. why? Conpiracy theories just like free energy.

That can won't be in public. Sorry. I have seen the last day of US economy. this car company could bankrupt Dow Jones.

  • you sound like you don't know what you're talking about. i assume it has a lot to do with your horrible grammar, but there seems to be more there. your videos are stupid by the way.

  • Youre a fuckin retard. This company is going to put GM and all them in their place. I'll be buying some stock as soon as its open to the public, and you'll be crying that you didn't. This is the future man! And its beautiful.

  • No. In economics. This is societal collapse vechicle for the world's GDP. This is why all foreign oil and oil companies will got out of business. put millions of jobs to layoff at risk. is this what you want to hear?

    Welcome to Socialism.

  • I would have bought one if I did have to much money to spent :) . Great car !

I'm buying a lottery ticket :) , wish me luck haha.

  • I agree they need to make a kind of more noise , don´t know, kinda develop an electronic noise when it gets fast, its freaky, but safer for pedestrians. Beside that, c´mon folks give electric sports car a chance. You don´t need to sell your 500ci HEMI now, neither me my 302 ford. Let´s hear the news. It´s nice.

  • i have seen electric cars...they actually make a good bit of noise...from wind resistance and wheel friction.

  • i loved its silence but it's to much expensive. 109000 dollars for little roadster

  • Don't believe all the propaganda that Big Oil throws at you man! There is still a lot of tire noise etc.

  • VRJensen1: Give me a break man, it isn't big oil propoganda. The car is silent, some people don't like that. Just because this opinion doesn't mesh with yours does not mean that Exxon paid me to express it.

  • I'm sorry, I meant no offense. I'm just saying that I've heard Big Oil throw out the same " It's so quiet we're all gonna get run over" argument. and quite frankly the Tesla roadster is about as quiet as my Mom's 4 door sedan. There's a Motor whine at low speeds and tire noise at higher....Just like my Moms Car....If they're going to sue for it being too quiet then they should also sue all of these other Quiet gas guzzlers...they're just as quiet.

  • And like I said, these cars(like all others) have motors. What people don't realize is that many of the sounds you hear even on traditional cars like the Aston Martin DBS are not real-they're a product of a manipulated filter, among other things.

Supercar makers realize they will not attract hardcore enthusiasts(who constitute about 90% of their buyers) without a sound.

Give it time, and they'll manipulate one(without speakers). Then everyone will be a winner.

  • You say you didn't even read my comment, and yet you're already beginning with name calling("dumb", "ass") when I've done nothing to provoke you. And I'm the ass here?

All I'm doing is suggesting something that could help this new source of energy catch on faster. People are going to get bitchy about the noise-in the class of sports car that the tesla competes in, noise matters. If that problem can be overcome, cars like these will enter the mainstream faster. That's all I'm saying.

  • Comment removed

  • "Your being the ass. I dont like to be an ass to people, but when you start ASSuming who I am and what I think, It throughs up a red flag."

*Sigh* Whatever you say man. I can't be bothered.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't think electric sports cars are really going to catch on until they make some sort of sound. That's what defines supercars-the engine sound. Any hardcore enthusiast will tell you that.

Eventually(probably 10-20 years down the road), the big supercar makers over in Italy will get on board the EV bandwagon and they'll likely find a way to get some sort of cool sound out of the electric motor. Then EVs will have become mainstream.

  • 0:14 sounds like a small jet engine :P

  • Haha yeah, just the tires though.

  • I didn't think it was that quiet :D

  • SHUT THE HELL UP U FuKN FAGGITS

  • Also to the people out there. Im 20, and i do like a good sounding engine. But if the car is fast, then why do you have to have sound? Its kinda like saying a car gose 0-60 in 2 seconds, but i dont like it because it doesnt make noice. Ok Im smart enough to know that if a car could do that, I wouldnt care about the sound. Just the shear performanc of it would be enough for me.

  • You can't possibly be serious? Though 2 seconds is an exaggeration, yes as a die hard car enthusiast there has to be sound. There is nothing more that puts a smile on my face than hearing the roar of an Aston Martin engine. There are much more to cars than just speed..seriously..there are many ppl out there like myself who know what I'm talking about when it comes to cars from an emotional aspect, not just something that gets you from point A to B and could accelerate fast

  • You can be be a car person with out the sound. I like sound to, trust me on that one. But if it performs awsome, it doesnt need to. It is not the factor of how a car sounds to its performance. Its like saying i would be happy with a car that sounded good but cant go 60 mph. NO. Basing a car on how it sounds a performance factor it stupid. I love sound, but if the car is fast you dont really need it.

  • tom58c: Judging from what you say, I don't think you're a true enthusiast.

The thing with car enthusiasts is that they tend to view the car emotionally, more than "yeah it goes fast! Good enough!" like you say. You judge solely on performance, not on a cars persona. Speed isn't all, it never was.

The sound is a part of that. Some cars(like Astons and Lambos) are DEFINED by sound. It's what makes a supercar a supercar.

This sound issue is not a performance factor for us-its an emotional one.

  • I didnt even read your whole comment cause its dumb. This is the internet dude, your not going to hear emotion. My jeep is loud, it went fast and had so much fun in it. The engine is blown, I dont have enough money to fix it. But I am never getting rid of it. I love my jeep. Its my first car and do have feelings for it. I have 8,000 bucks in parts list for it. But I cant get them, but I will never git rid of it. Its On my page. So stop being an ass and juging people.

  • Futuregohan14 puts it perfectly. For die hard car enthisiasts they look at the car from an emotional standpoint. The sound...the character...both of which this car lacks in addition to being "special" in general. It's not just about how fast a car could go...if it was cars would just be cars to some ppl...but it's more than that to many...and as long as this remains just a car that can accelerate fast...it will never gain true traction with die hard enthusiasts...from what I see..

  • People are just miss understanding what I was trying to say. But still, really, all people are just focust on the noice it makes insted of seeing the car for what it is. You cant say you wouldnt like a car when you personaly havent driven it. Its like saying a brand off car is bad, but you never heard of it till then. Im sure this car would have character, or have that special trate that would make poeple like it if they were to drive it. You cant solely base a car by just the noice it makes.

  • Nevermind then. I don't think I'll ever be able to explain this. Enthusiasts like the overall package..including noise. I know I wouldn't like this car because of what I already know about it..but I have no interest in bashing this car in other ways..though I can see many flaws in it. But a car with no sound? Really? Just sitting there listening to the wind? lol..okay buddy

  • and i think THAT excactly is a big problem of society, they dont apreciate advantages of new products because of old predjudice. back then when we still had tube tvs, some company made one half weight of the of the other tvs.people didnt buy it cause it "felt cheap" so they made it heavier in order to sell it. there are plenty of examples and now a product that could help saving earth isnt apreciated cause it makes no fucking sound? know what? i would like that little extra peace on the streets

  • "Saving the earth". Lol...my friend..there are lots of cars with very very low emissions. Just because it's electric doesn't mean you have to use the "save the earth" argument. If you look at a car as getting from point A to point B that's your deal. Others see it as much more than that

  • So the loudness from a roaring engine contributes to a car's "special" character? In that case, this car is even more special because it doesn't contribute to sound pollution. I hate loud motercycles and sports cars. By the way, there can be different kinds of "die hard" car enthusiasts, including those who like quiet, powerful, fast, cool designs. That can be an emotional package, too.

  • Well, then this car may not be for die-hard car enthusiasts. But it has a different kind of passion, perhaps, and certainly character. The craftsmanship looks like it's there, but I haven't seen one up close. And I do prefer quieter cars to noisy ones. And I absolutely hate noisy motorcycles!

  • I like the car because it is quiet and emission free too! Walking around city centres is like smoking twenty a day with the pollution you're breathing in, just look at Tokyo and Shanghai. They're wearing face masks there! Even if you don't have home PV systems these cars will move the pollution to one place ie, the powerstation, where the carbon tax can be put to good use, paying for filter scrubbers etc. Roll on clean air in the cities:-)

  • Meh. I've been in one, and I think it sounds awesome when you put your foot down. It sounds futuristic, and powerful in it's own way.

(besides loud = inefficient.. I want my power to get to the wheels, not out the exhaust)

I guess some people will always hang on to the oldschool engine sound, for nostalgia or whatever..

  • @Smooth258 and who is a hard core car enthusiast? Everyone? No. I collect cars and have built quite a few muscle cars. This is about the option to a new beginning. Not the end of gas powered. Let go of the ego for awhile.

  • And just because you want sound doesnt mean your a die hard car enthusiast. And just because sound isnt the most inportant thing to me doesnt mean im not a die hard car enthusiast. I dont put performance parts on cars that are loud just because. I love the sound of a well tuned engine racing through the mountian roads. But im not going to freak out just because a car doesnt make noise or say it sucks.

  • Wow there so smooth. Just think how peacful of a drive you would have for a long distence. I build and have jeeps that are loud, but this is impressive.

  • Dart00Z is obviously a kid with an immature passion for noise pollution..... makes him feel manly or macho, when in actuality he's a poor little schmuck!

  • its nice but it needs to at least sound like its got balls. sounds pretty lame.

  • Checkout the Roadster Sport. It has speakers and cartones. So it sounds like a Ferari with high revs. Simple fix. People shouldn't just vote your comment down because you like the rev sounds. I love those rev sounds. But I would drive an EV without them if I had to. But fortunately we have speakers.

  • do you know how much of an idiot you would look like if you drove around with fake engine noises coming out of speakers? lmao. I like the rumble of a V8 as much as the next guy but you, like me, have to accept that those days are going, going...soon to be gone.

  • You would be surprised at how realistic they can make it sound. They just need to surround the car with some small bose speakers. There perfect V8 noises.

  • my point wasnt whether or not they could do it, just that it would be really sad :P lol, plus the point of an electric car is to save energy, not spend it on 10 speakers :p

  • If adding a few speakers, so they can target the consumers that need the sound, this wouldn't be sad. Plus the blind people don't like the silent EVs. So these speakers would actually be a necessity.

  • Maybe they could make a cool electronic sound for the blind people, you know like in Knight Rider?

  • After they sell these cars with the speakers for the blind people, I bet Tesla will either make their own cartones or some other company will.

  • the car is ALL GO no show, why would it have to make silly noise? To make you feel a man?

Finally a car for the planet - thank you guys and good luck.

  • you obviously havnt driven a "fast" car before have you? i like to turn the radio down to hear my engine.

  • oh and i forgot to add, a quiet car is more dangerous than a car with "silly noises" if your not able to hear a car coming, how do u know where its at, how to avoid it, etc. a ferrari with no sound driving in the streets, thats pretty dangerous.

  • it's called look both ways before crossing the street, it's quiet, not invisible :P if that's too complicated for you then quiet cars and darwinism will soon be doing this planet a favor.

  • that wont work good in germany. lol.

  • Tesla is of course in the process of making a sedan as well that starts at half the price.

Where a Prius accelerates to 60mph in 10 seconds, the Tesla does it in 3.9. This shows that you don't have to sacrifice speed for economy. It's an excellent move from a marketing standpoint.

Of course before we let the electric car take over, we really need to move away from nickel based batteries. Where as the problem with nickel only exists around mining it, acid rain is still not ideal.

  • If we run low on lithium, we are going to have to use NiMH batteries. Or if we have advanced enough, we will eventually use ultracaps. Or will be using compressed air cars.

  • You do realize this company is a start-up company. The Roadster is the best option to enter the market. They are inventing or redesigning new ways to produce a car. They are improving the efficiency and batteries. How else are they going to recoup their research cost? Now that they got the research, they can develop the Model S. Then the Blue Star.

  • Look at all the negative comments. THIS is why the human race was doomed to fail. Arrogance and isolation....

  • its cool looking but i cant her it. there is nothing like sound of a twin turbo v8 motor.

  • The Brabus Tesla has the sound ;)

  • but the thing is can it beat a Corvette c6 or the ZR1

  • message to all of the haters and naysayers.....WE HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE!!!!!!

  • I couldn't agree more. What Tesla have done is got the ball rolling when everyone else was being pessimistic. Besides, pur electric cars are much MORE EFFICIENT at turning energy into motion than any other mechanism currently available. If all the cars on the road suddenly turned electric, the amount of carbon put into the atmosphere would halve! Just like that.

  • Climate change is a bunch of bullshit. Its for the stupid and people who want to use it as a vehicle to see their projects go forward. Aside from that I like the idea of electric cars, and common sense renewable resources.
