This game was the first I ever played that really had a strong mood or atmosphere that I felt. I played the original metroid before, but nothing rivaled this game for making me feel claustrophobic, desperate, and alone.
Metroid 2 was the 1st metroid game i'd actually played in full, i had a brief go at metroid in a store when i was little, but i didnt have a NES, and i have to admit, i liked the minimalist sound track of 2, which really added to the mood and tension of the atmosphere, it was creepy, eeiry and when i 1st played Metroid 2, i just didn't know what was around the next corner, those bigger metroid battles made me jump when i encountered them, especially the Omega and Queen encounters
i passed this game and it took me years to do so lol never been really of a metroid fan but that last boss that was like a crocodile or somethign was hard.
You managed to get pretty much all the good songs from this game. Some of the tracks were grating, like the one in the area leading up to the Queen. But the theme song is indeed epic and would sound great in a remake (which should be made). This game is too important to be forgotten, for both the story and the fact that this game established most of the staple Metroid abilities.
You're not going to get great compositions with the capabilities of the old Game Boy. But with the limitations, I think the composers did a great job with the music. The main tunnel theme is great. The Ruins theme is nice to hear in the midst of Metroid hunting - as the ambient noise is mysterious and foreshadowing enough that it works. The late game themes are good too.. especially the last Metroid push. It's not as great as Super Metroid.. but it cannot be called "horrible"
Probably my least favorite metroid game, until they started the whole FPS metroids on the new systems. Thats not to say I didnt like it, but it just didnt have that magic the 1st one had for me. They music is nice and catchy, but it also seemed a bit sloppy at times to me. Still not a game I would underrate, its just not my favorite of the series.
Definatly one of top most prominent games of my childhood. As a kid I was truly sucked in, and felt a strong sense of exploring the caverns of an alien planet. The atmosphere that came out of this gameboy game was truly incredible.
I disagree. The original Metroid had some classic compositions - Brinstar and Kraid's Lair. Those are unmistakable Metroid tunes. However, I still like Metroid II's soundtrack. It's really offbeat and weird and the main tunnel theme (2:05) is really catchy.
The only Metroid game that should have gotten a remake and didn't, with badass music and a unique storyline that is very intertwined into the other stories: Fusion references SR388, Super Metroid is integral to it, and even the Metroid Prime series refers to that the Metroid are originally from SR388. Please Nintendo, takes us back to SR388 for one last mission!
One of the few Gameboy games I think that should have a next-gen remake. I loved this game. The only metroid game where you mission was to actually hunt them.
@flexlex12 I don't think this game gets the respect it deserves. Yes, it was linear, and on GameBoy... but I agree with you. This was also the first game ever that truly terrified me... running through a ruin, two missiles left, and the deafening drone of your low health indicator. Out of nowhere, a Gamma Metroid descents upon you, and within minutes you disintigrate. Game Over. No Metroid since has captured that fear.
It's been a while since I played this game, but I still thought it was fun. :)

its supposed to sound organic and fleshy, and deep space-ish. Creep you out a bit.
Anyone else get the feeling from playing 2 and 3, both graphics and sound, that Metroid was supposed to give more of an impression of 'dirty' sci-fi?
Full of partly working technology, dissonant sounds, and things that are broken and unfamiliar everywhere?
and that newer metroid games are too 'clean?'
themadmallard 1 year ago 2
Sheesh, why do people feel the need to argue over soundtracks? All of the Metroid games have badass soundtracks, and that's that.

The Metroid 3 soundtrack rapes it all, though.

No it doesn't. Metroid 1 and 2 are both as good as each over.

The music to this game was excellent. It really made the world alien and unnerving. Both the music itself and how it was used ingame.

The music to Metroid 2 really grows on you, it's amazing to think that this game was released on a gameboy! Very nice indeed.

I never realized just how "Japanese" Metroid 2 sounded until now.
