This song reminds of me when I first started to realize I was alive, and that every action had a reaction, Almost everyone has experienced that moment where they look back on there lives, and just cry. Cry because it's sad, it's painful. But also because it's beautiful, and the mistakes we make are part of what make us who we are.
So yeah, we should stop swimming. And start living.
@toastman3456 je suis en accord avec ses réflexions arrêtons de nager et projetons nous dans l'avenir sans regarder en arrière, la vie est devant derrière c'est fini plus de chance d'y avoir recourt , ou d'y interférer, le vie est devant
“Stop Swimming” for me was the first time I felt like I’d kind of done a song which taps into that kind of quality that really touched and really moved people. - Steven Wilson
Quit trying yo apply this to ones self. This is Steven if u appreciate it listen. Its his ability to put himself out there that's beautiful. If u can relate awesome. That's what makes art beautiful.
@winterbottom81 Completely agree. Although I do have to admit.. I related so much to this song, it was hard for me to not to apply myself to it. This song alone got me questioning where I was headed in my life. Now days though.. All I can do is relate to this song. That alone, is enough for me.
Haha Its easy to do! You find inspiration in it which is what i think every artist strives for to some extent.(or at least i do) This is a beautiful song. i find myself listening to it all the time. His newest solo album is awesome, but i always find this song and A Smart Kid to be some of his most personal work. I just was just saying everyone has a story, and this is his not everybody elses. (rather circular) haha "You were the one whose brain moved in circles" -SW
"This is a very sad song, but if you're like me, I always find the saddest music is also the most beautiful and this is one of my favorite songs that I've ever written" - SW
you know, it's proggressive, not Christina Aguilera. It's poetry. Of course you have to be identified by the lyrics in some way in order to connect (not necessarily understand) them.

@o0LanternLight0o Whhaaaat? FoaBP has the worst lyrics out of all the PT albums. The only song with good lyrics is Anesthetize, and even then only partly. The rest of the songs are amazingly uninspired pseudomoalistic crap, and to make it worse without a single use of a good metaphor or an interesting rhyme.
@InsomniumX wow dude, idk i guess its just a matter of oppinion... i dont agree with what the first guy said exactly about SW being the greatest lyricist of all time but he is definitely not a bad one. to me they are real and they come from the heart. you can tell when somone is just choosing a subject to write about oppose to actually felling it. I think maybe the fact that I relate to his feelings so well is why I like the lyrics, but Its surly harsh to say they are crap.
@arindeardorff "Can't understand them"? Like, WTF? EXACTLY the reason why lyrics are the weakest part o f PT is that they are almost always so plain and in-your-face, SW's usually not saying anything overly interesting (She's moving on, Star of Something Beautiful, etc) and then he says it in an uninteresting way,
Except his psychedelic lyrics. Those are wonderful, he's got a great talent for imagery, Too bad he's busy complaining about Xboxes these days,,,
@InsomniumX Well, honestly, I haven't listened to EVERYTHING they have. However from what I HAVE listened to, I have yet to notice very many plain and in-your-face lyrics. I'll listen to more, though.
@InsomniumX Actually, you'll find a lot of people who think like you. Many people think PT have lost all the lyrical mystique, if I can call it that, in their newer albums. You know, like in songs like Fadeaway. But I disagree. The new PT isn't really as in your face as people make them out. I mean, Blackest Eyes is a good example. And Xboxes NEED to be complained about. He dedicated a whole album to it, sure, but the songs are all unique and none are dispensable.
@TheStigsIndianCousin Blackest Eyes is awesome. Actually, most of In Absentia's lyrics are pretty good, I love Lips of Ashes, for example--they are simple but obviously heartfelt, and the metaphores seem sincere. But I think it just goes downward from that album... But I guess either way, I believe we can all agree that lyrics are PT's weakest part most of the time (since, you know, the composition and the production are almost always magnific : D).
@Eximious94 Roger Waters of course, he is the best. Other lyricists I personally find brilliant are Marillion's Fish and Steve Hogarth. Nearly any other lyricist (needless to say, speaking of more artistic forms of music) is better than SW. He is pretty mediocre on the whole, with only brief and rare good moments, although the guy's learning - I see Postcard has wonderful lyrics. ;)
@weischamp My personal favorite lyricist is probably Martin Walkyier (ex Sabbat/Skyclad). An amazing lyricist and one of the few Metal lyricists that actually makes me give a damn.(but a terrible singer) Even the cheesy funny Warhammer tribute Blood for the Blood God contain pretty intricate use of words.
The only reason im sharing this with a total stranger is because I think he is underappreciated.

I'll leave now this can't continue
But I forget which door I came through
And I know that the lift can be painfully slow
So I think I'll leave by the window...

I'll be at the shore to share the pain
lets not be scared of nothing to gain
We will travel to the place and begin
lets touch the spirit that has arisen within
The aroma of soul will fill our hearts
we will find the cloud to rise and depart
Free from the shadow, free from the rain
Hold on together
everything to gain..............

most devastatingly tragic song ever written. Steve Wilson excells at this style of writting. this is one of my favourite PT tracks.
