After watching, I decided to look for explanatory videos about LQG. And came up with 1 rather involved lecture with poor video and audio quality, and a few videos of Smolin bemoaning the poor funding LQG gets. Do a search for String Theory, and you get pages and pages of hits to lectures by active researchers explaining aspects of String Theory to all levels of folks from the general public, to physics students, to other active physicists. Perhaps LQG guys should try to get taxpayers interested.
Great lecture, but the audio needs compression and anti-clipping because both the dynamic range and the frequent distortion make it difficult to often hear and need constant adjustment of volume.
We, human race, think of present theories of String, Loop, and other unified theories as ancient philosophers like Democritus think of atomos, the indivisible particle of mater. We sim dt 1of em is ryt but so far everything is still theory and we're still far from knowing the ultimate reality. Ryt nw, we're just scratching the surface. Relying only in equations and physical experiments r lyk horses wearing blinders on a race. They think they're moving 4wd bt dey hv no idea wer deyr goin.
@darcon81 "We sim dt 1of em is ryt but so far everything is still theory and..."
No. Rather, collections of hypotheses which are mathematically consistent together. A "theory" is a hypothesis, or collection, which has withstood empirical testing to the point that we can have confidence in it. I make the distinction, since unscrupulous people often take advantage of the confusion, calling successful theories they don't like "just a theory". Very slippery and deceptive. And it really fools people.
They say that T.O.E. could explain every thing but the thing is they can't even explain what are energy (ies) is causing psychic phenomena and the spirit world. Worse some of em don't even believe it. A unified theory can explain the link between the tangible and intangible matter. The dark matter and the common matter. They should combine philosophy, spirituality and science. I believe the truth lies not only in empirical knowledge alone but our innate knowledge and faith.
@darcon81 Well put. Einstein said imagination is more important than knowledge, and it would take a new Einstein to come up with the incredible imagination to derive the truth about quantum phenomena. Theory and experiments are the funding blocks though to which scientific philosophy can act upon. As Einstein again said, all we know comes from experience. Imagination can reveal weak links of experience and expose the true causes instead of be deluded by symptoms.
Smolin's book is great. I'd recommend it to everyone. Smolin isn't anti-string. He simply writes that it's achievements have been overstated and other approaches have been needlessly pushed to the margins.
Smolin writes that string theory might indeed turn out to be right. Or it might indeed turn out to be wrong. But other approaches should also be encouraged.
@FeelOfFriction " Dark energy is a crisis because quantum field theory and general relativity do not predict a universe dominated by dark energy, energy not mediated by the exchange of known bosons.
This video is grounded in Smolin's book "The Trouble with Physics," which I very highly recommend.
Physics is a human community that marries paper and pencil theorists (e.g., Einstein, Weinberg) and guys who measure things in the lab and in deep space (Rutherford, Hubble). Each branch deeply needs the other. Smolin convinced me that String Theory is all theory and no lab work.
String theory can be potentially falsified and should the hadron collider cause a micro black hole that would be evidence in favor of string theory and against some other competing QFT
@liveguns : I have read Smolin's "The Trouble with Physics." While a bit fumbling in parts (because Smolin is not a social scientist), the book overall is a masterpiece, and I very highly recommend it to all of you.

chris, The truth is, there are 2 theories explaining the universe and nature, and it breaks down to a gravity and energy thing, which is more difficult to explain.
Theory 1: Einstein's General Theory of Relativity - It is pretty darn close to universally correct. The problem is when you get below a milimeter from a gravitational object (we will use Earth) The General Theory falls apart. The equations no longer work.
@painxtreme : The strong & weak force are effective only over intra-nuclear distances. Macroscopic objects have no net EMF charge, because of the exact cancellation of + and -. So for macroscopic objects over astronomical distances, gravity is the only remaining force and is easily tested and verified. At distances less than 1mm, gravity does not so much fail as become very difficult to test given present technologies, because it is so weak relative to EMF.
@alnot01 So are you in the camp of gravity either being sapped from our dimension (brane) by another, or being leaked into ours..or dubious about 11 dimensional hyperspace? It would explain how emf out performs it on the small scale, and honestly if gravity were much less scalable with size, it would present some interesting problems, ie. people exerting strong gravity upon each other and objects within a given size range. I will always be lost in my fascination with quantum, but it eludes me
I know this goes over 500 char., but it takes a little more to break it into lay terms.
Theory 2: I am generalizing a bit here. I am putting the various Quantum Mechanics into one hat, but it essentially explains what you've asked. Quantum is the physics of the very small. In Quantum world, particles behave in what we would think would be a very irrational way. They can disappear, reappearing in other locations, and some behave differently under observation. Very generalized, but there it is
People like physicists are make things happen (ex; Engineering, TV, Radio, Cars, Airplane, Computer, and etc), and can be enjoyed for people like you. BRAVO!!

I just read that the NSF people have been watching porn. But I didn't expect to find a YouTube video that shows dozens of them watching such a hardcore porn. ;-)
Close again...however, there are interesting circumstances that do not have relavancy to black holes or hydrogen..that being the branes supplied from M-Theory that our universe is contaiend within...the place where energy starts in order to become matter. The branes functions are clearly visible in hadrons as a protons mass is not entirely made up of the quarks it contains, there is more energy too it... the same energy that is released through decay as photons (quanta of elctromagnetic energy).
this is what happens when a scientist speaks about "philosophy" as from within... some interesting points, but not the best exposition... too "general" to be of interest. Bad science, bad philosophy...
Most of the powerful minds I encountered as a student were mediocre teachers. Their writings were much clearer, and said all that they had to say on the subject. Over coffee and beer, they disdained polished teaching as taking time away form research, and as salesmanship over substance. Smolin is cut from the same cloth, but had the decency to move his career to a think tank. He is quite aware that his concerns nowadays are mostly philosophical. Unlike philosophers, he knows a lot of science.
I only said it is philosophically unsophisticated. May be he is a great scientist, but the philosophical implications... well, I think are really naive.
I retract myself saying it's bad science, but I don't retract saying its bad philosophy. There are good scientists who also are good philosophers (of physics). He is getting into philosophical issues that are highly debatable. Even if the physics, ceteris paribus, were right.
@alnot01 By the time people get to University they should be basically self-teaching. They ought to get the basics from text books and by their 3rd year of undergrad (their junior year) from the scientific literature.
@NuyBard : I have been mostly self-teaching since age 16, have always believed in buying the textbook and reading it attentively, liked a lot of my texts, and began reading schoilarly stuff when I was freshman. This may describe you too, but it sure as heck does not describe most kids going through college nowadays.
Universities should save money by teaching core courses via canned lectures delivered by broadband. The YouTube model, in other words.
For example, mainstream science decided before years, Aether doesn't exist, because its motion should be observable by using of light. But the analogy of light waves in vacuum are waves at wave surface and by using of such waves surface can be never observed, because is serving as a space for them already.
So, Smolin is right and science still depends on intersubjective opinion i.e. democracy - not the facts. Simply because facts are rarelly considered by science, only interpretations of facts.
@liveguns : I have read Smolin's "The Trouble with Physics." While a bit fumbling in parts (because Smolin is not a social scientist), the book overall is a masterpiece, and I very highly recommend it to all of you.

@alnot01 Good book overall indeed (although his fellow physicists did not like it at all, search on the net for example for Polchinsky's review of Smolin's book). But I think he can be critcized for putting too much emphasis on falsifiability. I'd say that string theory is a scientific research program (even deserving to be the first on a non prescriptive list of viable scientific programs) but nonetheless (as Smolin argues) it does not deserve the quasi-monopolistic status it enjoys today...
there was absolutely no point in this meeting. Everyone in this room already new everything he said, and the only reason he wrote this book was for money. which, by the way, no realy scientist would bother to buy.
@arcious : Smolin's book is addressed to a readership much broader then professional physicists. You see, physics is supported by everybody's taxes. What Smolin is doing is warning us as taxpayers that by funding string theory and almost nothing else, we are not getting good value for our money.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is just amazing that downright crackpots like Smolin have a direct access of this kind to National Science Foundation. Physics will indeed be in trouble if those who decide about the organization of the institutionalized U.S. science choose to directly listen to similar pseudointellectual waste.

Physics is a human community that marries paper and pencil theorists (e.g., Einstein, Weinberg) and guys who measure things in the lab and in deep space (Rutherford, Hubble). Each branch deeply needs the other. Smolin convinced me that String Theory is all theory and no lab work.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
This is just amazing that downright crackpots like Smolin have a direct access of this kind to National Science Foundation. Physics will indeed be in trouble if those who decide about the organization of the institutionalized U.S. science choose to directly listen to similar pseudointellectual waste.
