Thanks to everyone for your comments. It saddens me that so many of our servicemen and women have been killed and injured since I recorded this last year. I think this hymn has declined in popularity as many may feel that it's too jingoistic - for instance, in this hymn Arkwright dismisses the carnage of World War 1 as 'our lesser Calvaries'. but it is perhaps typical of its time when people didn't want to hear about the sadness and desolation of war.
Very appropriate as tomorrow is Remembrance Sunday.

I remember going to the cenotaph as a boy and singing O Valiant Hearts. It isn't heard as much now, but is still popular with veterans.

Thanks for commenting. It's been a sad time for both our countries recently, but at least we can remember the work that our forces do for us.
