I just found this video. I've been to all 33 Tribute concerts at the Surf Ballroom . I started going in 1979. It's been called The Buddy Holly Tribute, The Winter Dance Party, Legendsfest, and The 50's In February. I wouldn't know how to miss it each each year: Great Music and Great people. If you're in Clear lake, you should visit the Surf Ballroom. It's one of the truly historic music venues.
I was passing through Clear Lake last October, (driving from New Hampshire) and stopped by for a few minutes. They had closed for the day, so I'll have to make a return trip one of these days. I'd love to see the interior and maybe catch a show.
There are very few pics of that night. There are some pics of Waylon Jennings from the gig in Green Bay the night before. It was like standing upon holy ground when I stood where Buddy stood.
The folks at the Surf when we were there couldn't have been better. The folks in the gift shop couldn't have been nicer. I got to stant where Buddy stood and I weeped openly. It about tore my skin off. Then we went to the crash site and what skin was left got tore off in that field just outside of Mason City, IA.
If you even think you like this music then a visit to the Surf and Clear Lake is mandatory
Was there about 15 years ago , Buddy has always been my favorite singer. The surf was closed but the monument outside was something to see !!! They was wrong THAT DAY THE MUSIC DIDN'T DIE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i drove 12 hours to watch a show there a few years back - that place just wreaks of cool factor ! I hope more bands i want to see get lured there in the future .
Thanks for the tour Jeff. What a trip watching this since I graduated from high school with you and I worked at the SURF for a while in 73 or 74. I saw a lot of concerts here including Head East the night before I went in the Navy. The SURF looks alot better now than it did in the 70"s. Good job. Dave L

Great video
Visited here twice, loved it.Best of singers performed here. Felt like Buddy Holly, Rich Valens and
Big Bopper looking down from Heaven.
Also make time to visit the crash site in the very sad, lonely, windy, ice cold cornfields.
R.I.P. you will never be forgotten

Are there any existing photographs of Holley from that night playing the gig?

I grew up there, spent a lot of time in that place and used to sail sailboats with the narrator of this video, Jeff Nicholas.
Thanks Jeff for taking great care of an American Icon.

When we were there, I wish we had met Jeff.
We met a COMPLETE JERK named Wayne, who treated my daughter and the rest of our family like CRAP.
I don't know why they let him continue working there.
Our friend at the hotel called Jeff and told him how horribly we were treated and I would hope he had done something.
Couldn't even buy a freakin' t-shirt or anything from the gift shop because little Wayne was too busy having a temper tantrum cuz we were there.
Won't EVER go back again!!

It has now been proven that Buddy NEVER used that phone that is shown in the video. Another myth.......
