  • I just find it amazing that two extremely skilled guitarist exist who create music that seem to be polar opposites.

  • Both some of my favourite guitarists, but IMO petrucci is the best in the entire world right now.

  • aguante steve vai

  • I prefer Vai's instrumental stuff, but Petrucci for band stuff. The thing is, Petrucci could play anything of Vai's, but he couldn't put the same emotion into it. Both absolute monsters.

  • I think Petrucci predictable phrases. Vai is more creative.

  • @Dionese17 vai goes for weeks fasting to create new ideas. Both of them are sick. Petrucci is faster, Vai experiments alot more w/ different ideas

  • Vai is a little less tangible than Petrucci but is likely the better guitar player.

  • i dont think you can go wrong with your choice, they are both amazing guitarists.

  • John Petrucci is a thousand times better than Steve Vai

  • jaja AGUANTE PETRUCCI!!!

  • petrucci is the best in the world, as mike is the best drummer and ruddes´s keyboard is the best, i think DT have the best progressive musicians in the world... they can blow your mind constantly for 24 minutes...

  • Definitely Petrucci, Every time I hear one of his songs then switch to one of Vai's songs, I want to switch back after like ten seconds in. I just love the emotions that he speaks with his guitar, and how the music is hard but easy to listen too. Vai's just has way too much attack in his music for my taste. One vote for JP :D

  • The as I am solo by petrucci pretty much makes my mind up for me :)

  • kinda hard to say. Steve Vai is pretty fuckin insane as a guitarist, but Petrucci has more of a technical feel. When you listen to Dream Theater, you think "Wow, it's crazy that he can even remember that shit." Theres so much technicality in DT songs that its hard to believe that he can even play it so well live. I like Petrucci more, but Steve Vai is DEFINITELY second best in my book.

  • Perucci any day!!!!!

  • petrucci till the end

  • GUTHRIE GOVAN!

    kidding just trolling lol

Kinda hard cause theyre two different players. I prefer Vai a bit better because he has great showmanship and creativity

  • steve vai has very much ideas but his guitar playing sounds too modern in my opinion.. that's the reason why i prefere John Petrucci but.. man.. you can't compare 2 different styles ?!

  • JHON PETRUCCI !!

  • dont get me wrong i love vai and petrucci. they are both talented guitarists and have god status to me. but i think petrucci does a more all around technique and branches aeons of ages lost from classical music and blends it into a more modern feel. vai has class but petrucci has more technique and originality. you hear his guitar and you just KNOW thats petrucci. when i hear vai i think coheed and cambria or malmstein

  • IMO petrucci's best work is DT, i mean rhythm, solo, etc. i think thats his true style.

  • A mi me gusta mas Steve Vai, it's awesomee!!

  • Petrucci makes a lot of difficult songs, his solos are outside of time respect the drum.

  • well i will say dat Vai has an upper hand with experience..................but Petrucci is an equally gud guitarist

  • Petrucci has a style that is more ...caged. He has a precise language.

I like to think that he uses notes as words.

    Vai uses notes as colours.

A writer and a painter (what a metaphor, lol). How can you compare them?

  • @MrFreerocker and he is god

  • @MrFreerocker what do you use your notes as? :)

  • Steve Vai is the best guitarist but I prefer Dream Theater music.

  • vai is awesome petruuci stomps

  • Petrucci

  • petrucci.

  • dude you're biased!

  • @GuidoPerdomo It didn't seem Biased to me. How did you think it was?

  • @livintex the songs by steve vai represent his full potential, unlike those of petrucci. i know it's from his solo album, but IMO he should've included more representative solos, such as the one in "as i am", "octavarium" various songs man.. get it?

  • @GuidoPerdomo Yah i gues that is true. I guess i just love Petrucci so much that everything from him is his best.

  • Steve vai

  • Steve Gay is better

  • Well, it's pretty obvious that Petrucci is better in overall technique, but that's far from everything. Vai has more than enough technique to get what ever sound he wants out of his guitar, and with that technique he manages to make his guitar say so much more than Petrucci.

  • @MattBoy16 no it's pretty obvious that Vai is better in overall technique. Vai is better than Petrucci and to be honest I don't know of any guitarist better than Vai.

  • I like both but Petrucci hands down

  • John Petrucci

  • Two of my least favorite shredders. I guess I'd go with Pettrucci.

  • petrucci is faster there is no doubt, but speed isnt every thing! on overall scale a guitarist whos good at everything...checkout steve morse

  • what ? JP taps faster than steve vai ? are you crazy man ? steve did 22nps tapping oh yes JP definitely wins in picking , steve vai is the king of tapping , but JP is not the king of picking , it's paul gilbert

  • I think vai is the best fret tapper in the world ,he makes it sound so cool . even though petrucci might do it faster, petrucci is a faster alternate picker of the two

  • I'm a DT fan. But WITHOUTbeing biased here,

JP: Very CLEAN technique and tone, very balanced and he definitely owns Steve in terms of technical ability. And of course not forgetting his clean and melodic picking style.

Steve: His unique phrasing, CREATIVITY and ARTISTRY,

and he's a whammy-wanker(HAHA) He has stronger musical identity than JP. He has a unique sound and style that, once you hear it, you know its him.

Truth is, if you could combine both traits, = AWESOME!

  • idk, close one here, JP owns steve when it comes to being able to play. and JP's solo's in Dream Theater just where all good, but it also depends when you would ask this to me, now at this moment i'm more into JP than vai, but this really is a close one for me.

  • steve vai , richie blackmoore, randy, zakk wylde, jimmy H, forever!!!

  • La neta parenle a su rock ambos son unas pistolas de la guitarra tanto en innovacion como en dificultda de tecnicas :D Deberia tocar Vai con Portnoy un dia

  • JP:alternate picking and sweep picking

Steve:Tapping, harmonics and use of tremolo

  • Petrucci is technical great...maybe even better then Vai, but when it comes to feel, composition..advanterous and uniqueness...there are few guitarplayers that can match with Vai...Petrucci isn't one...no matter how good he is. Vai is something unique. If you listen to nowadays shredder guys...they almost all sound like Petrucci or Malmsteen. Vai is hard to copy..just like Hendrix or Satch...where Petrucci isn't as unique.

  • come guys dont compare petrucci to vai, petrucci is more out of the reach, vai is good but petrucci is god!

  • The only thing i dislike about vai is that he dresses really strange... its just too much. Although i love his skill, i prefer petrucci's style a little more, but this comes from being a DT fan, so i have to admit i am slightly biased. But i ave been listening to alot of vai lately and im warming up to him.

  • Comment removed

  • Love them both but I enjoy Petrucci's style more. To me it's more emotional.

  • John Petrucci goes into World Domination Mode and explodes Vai's head with his 8 billion notes per second shredding.

  • Who gives a damn about who's better; I love listening to both, and so long as they both continue being AWESOME, who cares?

  • I think we can't compare Vai to Petrucci. They are 2 f*cking great guitarist with different style.

  • PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

  • @nabster98 - yah thats true....

@whitelordfs - you dont know what u r saying. feels like ur pushing vai to the limit.

@LetThereBeJHC - petrucci has no limitation. only "JB-JP-YjM" is tough in guitr world!

  • i like them both,

  • Petrucci.

  • Vai doesnt even come close to Petrucci

  • sorry but steve vai doesnt compare whitelord. Look into music theory and you will be utterly shocked by petruccis note choice and how he comes up with these crazy competitions. anyone who has listened to dream theater knows that petrucci is much more than speed and accuracy. Steve vai could only dream of having so many techniques in his arsenal

  • JOHN PETRUCCI has got ath GOD MODE. Steve Vai no...i'm sorry!

  • These are two monster players but my personal preference lies with Petrucci. I prefer Petrucci because of his songs, technique, and overall feel. Between his Dream Theater, "An Evening with", and solo albums there is a lot of brilliant playing I could listen to for a long time. Sometimes Vai annoys me with his constant tremolo use that at times overshadows otherwise nice melodies. Don't get me wrong I love both players and they are NOT human! But if I had to choose it would be with JP.

  • COME ON guys we all knows that Vai/SATRIani is UNDER JOHN PETRUCCIS PLATE!!!! vai don't have anything but blues. pentatonic tone... about john What about

Partida kay vai, only 3 members of Petruccis band and DT.. HONOR THY FATHER Let it ring!!!!!!!!!

  • @trifermata you should really not say stuff when you dont know if its true, vai plays a hell of alot more then blues and pentatonic scales, in fact vai and john petrucci have both studied music theory to an insane degree, petrucci is amazing and probably one of the best guitarists around, but im personally a fan of vai just because i love his music and his technique, which why ill have to go with vai on this one

  • Petrucci is really fast, but I would like to see more things from him. While Vai is not jusu fast. He is incrediblo from all aspects. If you want to, watch the video G3 La Grange live in Tokyo with Satriani, Vai and Petrucci. At approximately 5:05 he cannot undersand what Vai does and he leans to see how heplays.

  • all of you picker's and non- picker's alike, Vai is not from this planet and no mortal guitarist can touch him!!! Steve Vai is and always remain above the rest!

  • Both Vai and Petrucci are excellent guitar players in there own right, but if I had to choose I would say Petrucci because of his progressiveness in songs.

  • vai is best. If you listen to his songs, theres something about them that nobody can even get close to touching. even in the metal scene, hes the one who made 7 strings popular and the first to use them in rock. im not too sure on how id rate petrucci in versatlity, but he gets beat in every other aspect by vai except weight lifting and being buff and badass with his size. vais a god and petruccis jesus. then its paul or satch. theyre prophets.

  • What are the names of the first 2 vai songs? They were EPIC.

PS: Petrucci wins IMO, but they are both awesome.

  • One likes the mother one likes the daughter i myself love em both...

  • It's a tough one, Petrucci has the size and strength but Vai has more experience and has a good reach advantage.

  • This is such a steve Vai bias video its ridiculous, john petruccis got like 2 minutes and vai has like 8. plus he didnt even use any dream theater solos, or any real moments like he did with steve vai, this video is so fuckin bias

  • i love listening to dream theater much much more than steve vai's music. They are both some of the best in the world in my opinion, but if i had to choose, i would go with mr. Steve Vai. He's been my favorite since i started 7 years ago. Vai is just all around good at everything on the guitar. Petrucci is very close to the top as well in my book. Like i said, some of the best guitarists in the world.

  • Vai could Sound just like Petrucci if he wanted to.... but could Petrucci sound like Vai? i think not.

  • @isk8withemerica Steve Vai can't WRITE like John Petrucci. This is what truly matters. Oh, and Vai can't improvise very well.

  • @isk8withemerica no way vai could sound like petrucci, plus petrucci could totally sound like vai if he wanted too

  • Anything John petrucci can do, Vai can do better. John petrucci is my favourit player. But i would be dumb if I said he is better than Vai.

  • @TheSuwayyah ok youre dumb cause u didnt say it

  • anything petrucci can do vai can do better

  • Steve got taught by Joe Satriani! Steve Vai wins..

  • Two very different monsters, Vai is a bit more detailed with all his whammy wanking and a very articulate style where Petrucci is a better (band) player where Vai is a pure guitar artist ofcause with singing on some tunes. But for pure guitar virtuosity i have to go with Vai where if i want shred, appegious and rythmplaying that goes along with a band i go with John anyday for his participation in DT and allso LTE.

  • @SkeksisBestSongEver

    My thoughts exactly.

  • nothihg on earth can defeat animate .inanimate.... vai cant leave his fuckng wah and whammy shit alone

  • estas comparaciones de tal versus tal me tienen las bolas por el piso.

  • well I prefer steve vai's solo albums than petrucci's, but I think petrucci's best works are with dream theater which is the best metal band in my opinion..

Two different styles and two different hands... Both very great guitarrists no dubts :)

  • My vote for Petrucci simply because nothing from Vai can make me feel like listening to The Best Of Times and Octavarium's Razor's Edge solos.

  • petrucci makes via sound like an assian school girl

  • I prefer Petrucci myself...not to say he's "better" but I just prefer his music..

  • Since i like More Advanced Techniqued music i say Petrucci but thats only my opinion

  • they are both incredible guitarists. If i had to chose, i would go with Vai. He's always been my favorite guitarist. Petrucci still rules though.

  • Petrucci is more musically adept

Steve is more riff adept. I can't give my vote to either.

  • Petrucci is God and steve is hes son,

  • EN LOS 80´S VAI ERA MEJOR POR MUCHO...

EN LOS 90´S AMBOS ESTABAN MUY PAREJOS...

EN LA ACTUALIDAD ME PARECE QUE PETRUCCI ES POR MUCHO MEJOR GUITARRISTA QUE VAI, PERO ESO NO SIGNIFICA QUE VAI SEA MAL GUITARRISTA, POR EL CONTRARIO ES UN EXELENTE MUSICO, MAS SIN EMBARGO PETRUCCI ES UNA BESTIA...

  • Petrucci eats Steves shit..NO COMPARISON

  • @Evilgmog41 i bet you would eat it if you got the chance

open your ears, its very clear they are equal

  • @urdumbfoo Sorry mate, too busy eatin your momma...ps Vai kicks petrucci ass

  • Petrucci !

  • como pueden poner a ellos dos D: si ellos estaban en el mismo grupo TT_TT

  • This is dumb.

It's like asking, who's better Jesus or Moses?

Ask a Christian and he/she will say Jesus.

Ask a Muslim and he/she will say Moses.

  • I'm sorry for Steve Vai but John Petrucci is the beast...is my GOD!!!!

  • Petrucci rules¡¡¡

  • pero pusieron solo 3 temas john petrucci y 100 de steve vai de todas formas me gustan mas john xq es mas tecnicas y mas melodias me aburre steve vai con sus efectos de todo tipo pff andate a la mierda steve vai aburres -.-

  • id prefer to listen to John Petrucci, its easier to listen to. Steve Via is amazing of course bit the music isnt as easy on the ear. in my opinion.

  • Vai win!

  • steve vai solos are more creative, but i think they are about evenly matched in skill at least

  • At 0:58, Vai looks like a fag. John Petrucci is the better guitarist. I also think Steve's a show-off.

  • Don't compare guitar gods. Just put them all in one glorious catigory..

  • Theres just so much i can take of that fuckin' ibanez tone until i want to rip my ears off. They are both extremely creative...but i like petrucci's tone. It's less annoying. Plus for all of you saying that Petrucci plays nothing but metal....lies....why don't you listen to his albums fully. He plays a range of styles and pulls them off perfectly!

  • Emotions are for faggots.. and women.

  • @xorganizationxvx Hahaha fail. Even the most agressive, male, football fans are very passionate an emotional about their team.

  • @avenegedslaterfold Wrong. Football is also for faggots. They get their panties all bunched up for a fucking game involving balls made of pigskin.

  • @xorganizationxvx Well maybe not even football. But other examples like some massive metalhead moshing has anger/passion. That is emotion to. If you had no emotion you would walk around with a blank face and be very neutral on every aspect of life. Even people trying to act hard saying they have no emotions because they are manly are often angry and agressive which are emotions... soo yea.

  • @avenegedslaterfold Massive metal head "moshing" is a bunch of people swinging their heads around for the heck of it. They aren't angry at anything.. unless they're stupid, angsty, teenagers. Music is not an "expression of emotion" or anything gay like that. It's just music, nothing more.

  • @xorganizationxvx You either have no idea what your talking about, or you're really the most stupid person in the whole fucking world.

  • @Erithlon No, I'm afraid you are the one who has no idea of that which he speaks. This was made evidently clear after viewing just a few of your uploads.

  • @xorganizationxvx How is that then? Please clarify your awesome conclusion of obvious great truth!

  • @xorganizationxvx That was me who commented, I was on an other computer at the time.

  • @Erithlon It's not worth the time.

  • @xorganizationxvx I'm pretty sure football (Which should be called handball 'cause you really only use your feet for running, whereas soccer is all about using your feet, but I hate sports in all, so who cares) is made out of leather, not pigskin.

    Petrucci rules!

  • The fact that I got bored of Vai after 3 of his songs and that i never got bored of Petrucci for 10 albums tells everything.

  • lol i am baffeled that so many people think petrucci only plays metal.

  • PETRUCCI is the best

    steve vai is shit !!!!

  • i vote for petrucci

    vay is pure efects

  • At this moment Petrucci is the most complete guitar player in the world, fantastic work in his new album with dream theater! He has talent-technique and knowlage! I like Vai too but Petrucci is more complete than Vai!

  • @Audioslavetuga you are right dude, though it seems the new generation is even more complex (Tosin Abasi).

But Petrucci has a great, big history and IMO nobody can ever beat him because of that... tens of years of playing, some of the very greatest solos, unique style, godly riffs, versatile, multigenred, emotional... This is the personality we have known for ages. He has really made his career!

And Dream Theater remains my favourite band forever.

  • @Audioslavetuga neeehhhh

    not true

  • @Audioslavetuga As for most complete, I'd have to say Chris Broderick, but Petrucci is amazing.

  • @Audioslavetuga I don't play guitar and I don't know technically who is better but for me Steve Vai is poetry in motion, his music(melody) is precise, natural and intuitive, has a little bit mystic "touch" inside and every song is a different experience and story, on stage he is actor and dancer in the same time, so in my opinion Vai is most complete musician. :)

  • @salecver Exactly!

  • @Audioslavetuga I don't know about that but Vai is far more versatile and hid compostions are more diverse...plus he's more innovative with his sounds and ideas.

  • @sensational1982

Well, you have to think that Petrucci is in a band so, hes kind of stuck to that gender, but belive me, petrucci can play anything of any gender at anytime...

But I agree that Vai comes up with some pretty innovative techniques on the guitar and perfectly incorporates them in to his songs...

But Petrucci is a metal guitarist and me being a metahead my vote goes to him, sorry xD

  • @Shallafy the word is genre its french, gender is like male or female.. musically id go with vai, but technical skills on the other hand would go to petrucci.

  • @WilliamBonneau

    Sorry, I'm not english! n.n'

  • Vai is a great virtuoso, but Petrucci pushes human limits on guitar.

  • I love both of them...But i will vote on steve vai...They are both awesome players

  • John Petrucci, please, its common sense

  • Vai can shred what Petrucci can, and Petrucci can't work the diversity of techniques on the whammy, harmonics and other stuff like Vai, so I don't understand why most of the comments favor Petrucci in terms of technique or even emotion. To me, the best works of both show that both are extremely emotional and diverse players and writers, but Vai has the edge on range of techniques, though Petrucci seems to touch on more styles of songs. Both are the top wah users, that's for sure. Vai #1 for me

  • Both are freakin insane. Vai can shred like a demon, Petrucci can shred like a god. Don't diss Vai, he is unbelievable. I consider it an even match and NONE of us are worthy to judge them.

  • petrucci's music is just good..but steve vai has a style...

    john petrucci all the way...

    im his fan...

  • John Petrucci takes Steve Vai Down!!!

  • A tie for me.

  • ill probably go with petrucci, becouse he can combine technique with emotion

  • @MartinP95 And Vai can't combine technique with emotion? Just listen to Blue Powder or The Riddle.

  • vai....its easy petrucci may have some fan boys from the metal genre and so...but the truth is that steve vai has a larger bagage with different styles of music. and fuck all that petrucci is faster gtfo vai can make stuffs with his guitar petrucci just wish he could do....funny is that i like heavy metal but my lines are the truth steve vai puts petrucci to sleep

  • @whitelordfs atleast petrucci plays better dan you hahaha!!

  • @whitelordfs how could you say petrucci dominates the metal scene with Glasgow kiss on this vid; with its Scot-Irish melody?

I'm sorry but petrucci is far more diverse than vai in every shape and form. Vai, no matter who he's with, or what album, or what style he's playing the underlying theme is still psychedelic. Petrucci has covered e very style possible, from ragtime riffs to the blues to even country and flamenco. Vai can shred, no denying that but petrucci does it all.

  • @whitelordfs true, but JP is still awesome as :D

  • petrucci ftw

  • Petrucci is a master technician! The emotion he expresses is different than Vai's. Vai is much more fluid and imo, able to make the guitar "sing" like no one I've ever heard. I saw the G3 tour with both of them. When Petrucci played, the crowd seemed to be entranced watching him do amazing things. When Vai played, people had thier eyes closed and it seemed like they were more into feeling the music. I play drums, and I love them both, but I own way more DT/Petrucci than Vai records. Thanks!

  • steve vai.

  • petrucci all the way

  • VAI definitivamente ,,,Petrucci es bueno aunque cuenta con influencias de STEVE....

  • Hum, hard choice! I guess Petrucci is technically way better than Vai, and I really like his self-composed stuff! But Vai's music is also great, it's just that I'm more the progressive rock / metal fan ;-) So my vote goes to Petrucci! Both have enough "feel" for like 200000 other guitarists *g*

  • As a fan of weird scales, augmented 4ths, all that stuff... Petrucci gets my vote. That's not to say that Vai isn't an amazing performer, but Petrucci is more suited to my tastes.

  • John petrucci FTW!!!

  • Comment removed

  • petrucci is better technically and i think petrucci is also better with music but vai comes in very close with the music score too but i like the progressive metal sound john has so john gets my vote!

  • petrucci it's waaaayyy better than vai.... but booth are grate

  • both great guitarists but yeah petrucci is in my opinion better than vai

  • I have always loved effects. Some solo guitarists use them (Buckethead, Vai) and I loooooove that kinda music. I can listen to Buckethead all day.

I could also listen to people like Petrucci and Gilbert all day who don't use effects and are just pure guitar.

When it comes to skill, I have to say that Petrucci beats Steve Vai. When it comes to musical composition, I can't say who is better.

I like Petrucci better, but that doesn't mean that Steve Vai sucks.

  • Anyone who says that Petrucci is better than Vai, then in that case, Yngwie Malmsteen is better than Jimi Hendrix

(if you understand what i try to say)

  • lol...

  • That is a HORRIBLE comparison...

Petrucci actually has feeling. (Malmsteen doesn't)

Petrucci can be better than Vai... Petrucci is technically better. Vai does play that slow and soft stuff that we all say has "feel," but so does Petrucci. So tell me how, in any way, is that like comparing Malmsteen to Hendrix?
