I'd just like to put out there that there is no mention of time dilation in this anime. Time dilation is common theme in space travel sci-fi, however. So it is possible that the theme time dilation is meant to be implied. I had assumed that the ship could travel at the speed of light and that her text messages could not. This might account for Noburu's newspaper arriving first if Mikako's text was sent before the ship began it's return trip.

lmao, her text do go the speed of light, as they are transmited by light waves/particles the faster you travel the slower time progresses for you relative to people who are going normal speed

When is any of this mentioned in the film? I was merely providing another frame through which the film could be interpreted. I don't remember the film mentioning anything about her aging slower as a result of faster than light travel. It's been four months for me but if anything the only real focus of the film is the distance between the two characters and almost every other element of the story is left up to interpretation. Much like 5c/s or beyond the clouds.

Whenever she travels at light speed, time, technically, stops for her. When she traveled 8.6 light years at the speed of light, time elapses relatively slower for her than for Noboru, who is 'sitting still' on the Earth.

So while she felt only a couple hours had passed, he felt a couple years.

This is called "Time Dilation" and is explained in Einstein's theory of relativity.

Well, as far as I know - this is all there is. It's like a short story animated, done by amateurs. I first saw it on some anime night special documentary, and I doubt they would have included it if it wasn't finished - esp. since all the other stuff they showed were movies.

This anime is by an amateur. One person(and possibly a few helpers) created this entire anime.

no they both age the same way, her fighting in space and him recieving the message are two different time periods, for example, the scene where she is fighting the tarsians is 8 years before he got the message

Shinkai does it again! this style of ending is almost the same on 5 Centimeters Per Second, like a cliffhanger but makes u think so much. i cried much more on 5CPS. now imma watch The Place Promised In Our Early Days and see it still has that same style of ending. thanks for the upload! btw, she doesn't age like the guy cuz shes in space right?
