this is really useful and that but im not really sure what to do because i am actuallly rather tall compared to the rest of my team. I am 6ft i havent finished growing and everyone else is quite a bit shorter. i am 15
not all whites are tall (They usally average around 5'9 to 5'11) it really depends on where your from I'm probably that tall because of my Danish-German ancestry and because my dad always made sure i ate a balanced diet too And no offence taken mate but as i said it really depends on genes and diet (Good examples are the Dutch they average 6'1 for males , Lithuanians 6'2-6'3 same, Ukrainians 6'2) so really don't worry about your height it comes down to a good diet, exercise and genes
im a prop umm pretty heavy for my age 116kg and i nvr do perfect tackle cos i always hug my opposition n fell on em.. and the best part is when u fell on a guy ull hear the sound "urghhh" hahhahah
@zarol95 fuckin hell wouldn't want to fuck with you i'm 6'4 and 96-99 kg and i never make a perfect tackle either but smash em they ain't goin anywhere
@zarol95 your 5'8 aren't you that's the right height for a prop but there isn't a lock on my team thats the same height or weight as me so i just end up spinning the scrum around so i think i'm better as the 8 or a flanker but if the coach want's me there i'll be there where do you come from because you look like (Plz don't get offended if i'm wrong) like a polynesian e.g somoan, tongan kiwi so you must have a good rugby community down there up here nobody likes rugby that much so......
@WhiskerScot569 but for international rugby theyre tall around 5'11-6'1.. so i feel kinda short/midget when ii hang around with my teammates.. haha... its okay man didnt get offended at all.. im from malaysia but my ancestors we're polynesian .. im like a mix of poly and asian.. and yeah i gt lots of comment about my look ppl keep askin me wether im samoan or etc ahhaha... where ur from buddy? and what's ur height?

This is why NZ have such a good national side. Its a product of the excellent coaching the kids get at age grade levels. Playing against people of equal weight, rather than age seems a good idea too.
Pat gives a great explanation of preparation before the tackle. This is very important as it sets you up to make an effective tackle. Eyes on the core, face up, elbows in and hands up. Get off the mark, keep taking space on your opponent an close on him with shorter steps. Get in as close as you can staying on your feet, don't dive into the tackle (big injuries occur with this method). The contact target zone is with chest & shoulder, punch arms through and drive with legs.
im a back wing and in practice im getting decked again and again. i need to get better at tackling and taking/avoiding/charge through tackles. any tips?
@notsuchaclevername11 if the opponent is bigger then you, then the best way is to crouch low and wrap your arms around their legs. Its good because you feel less force and of course they can't run without their legs so they go down straight away.
@notsuchaclevername11 as a wing, you should focus 100% in wrapping legs, when they come at you, you crouch and jus warp their legs, don't need to try to stop the enemy with streght.
@zakjoshuamorgan oh right cool. by the way, that last bit of by comment that got cut off was basically saying that a lot of people almost go in head first/chest first. Just practice making sure your getting your head out of the way and making good contact with a shoulder. Hope that helped :)

Try making sure you're going low. Big guys are gonna weigh alot, and I'd they're running fast their momentum will be huge. Straight up tackles won't cut it unless you're big yourself, but a low tackle effectively can trip them up, as their upper body will maintain huge momentum but their legs will stop moving, and they probably fall down pretty hard. And if you're getting hurt try as much as possible to get them with a shoulder, a lot if the time, especially when tackling quick guys people end
I'm having trouble when a fast strong and big player is running at me if I try to tackle them I normally get hurt and I never take them down. Any tips?
@jakezak with bigger players you have a size advantage so i just get as low as i can and wrap below the waist. Alternatively, making contact with your body sideways allows you to lean back and use the heavier players weight/momentum against him.
Thanks for the comment I agree with the shorter steps going forward but the main object of the tackler initially is to take space and to put pressure on the decision making capabilities of the attacking player.
@acroo1231 It's to try keep yourself on your toes so you can move with the opposing player.
A lot of players hold on their heels (flat footed) which makes it a lot harder to move fast laterally, you tend to see these players with stationary lower bodys trying to lean across into tackles, which will make you weaker, and possibly get pushed off easy.
If you stay on ya toes, you can move across with the player, and also drive into the tackle easier etc. Think short steps.
@geochaosakanick I mean literally on your toes. It's to try avoid standing back on your heels (a.k.a planting your feet) which tends to make you slower to physically react, and more likely to lean and reach for a tackle if they evade you. As opposed to stepping with and tackling through them (which is what you want).. If that makes sense.
@fabiio thanks. another thing, you know how we're supposed to get low? to do this, is it better to bend at the waist as if you were bowing, or to bend at the knees like a squat?
@geochaosakanick Hmm good question. I would say both (lol). Whatever you feel comfortable with and can remain balanced. Have a look at Pat at around 5:15
Sometimes I personally prefer to get lower than that (during the point of contact), with my spine as close to horizontal as I can. Sort of like a spear, and hit around their waist. But that does sometimes allow their arms to get free to offload the ball.
I checked out that website in the vid description and half the videos on that site aren't worth watching, and the ones that are only really focus on the scrum.
always look at the body area, i play hockey and rugby and my hockey coaches have always told me watch the upper body area, mostly the chest and core. this applies to all contact sports because the upper body is the key to reading the oppositions moves
@kingclueless Have a look at the link in the video description (I've just updated it). There are more videos there. I'm not sure how good they are, but it is the same source this vid is from (although it has changed a lot since I saw last).
You actually happen to be especially beautiful, many thanks for the video. its pathetic i'm located within Tagg Flats for the reason that i cannot get great make-up, then again i get free of cost cosmetics samples through "Gratis Makeup Samples". i adore Max factor cosmetics!
@LilAlboboii my advice is: keep on your toes so can stick close to them (don't get caught flat footed). Then make sure you get shoulder contact on them, if you only make arm contact you will get brushed off.
Another tip is to initially stay on their inside shoulder and force them to take a path around your outside shoulder. If you're directly in front of them they have two paths/directions to go to get around you, and therefore can easily fake one direction and make you over commit.
All of this works I'm a 140LB Flanker maybe the smallest forward in my league, using this helped a lot based of my own calculations I think my tackle completion rate is up from 45% to 68% thanks!
try to tackle low and lock down the movement of the opposing player's legs - without legs they cant move. If you dont manage to hold on you've at least slowd him down for other team mates to catch him. Although, I like to tackle mid-chest, right at the core, and fall back to the ground - dragging them with me. If running at full speed, they'll have a lot of momentum, and all you have to do is direct this momentum downwards. Just remember - eyes up, and be ballsy.
I think Ive found the sport ive been looking for. I have tried most sports and I feel this is the final sport ..Im 6ft 1 and 220 lbs ..im hoping i can knock out a few person lol!
I am 15 years old, 145 pounds, i have played hooker for a while but there's a strong change that i'll play wing for the next season. I play on a men's team and i am probably the smallest person on any of the teams and i can't tackle these guys worth shit... any advice?
@jogo00062 doesnt matter how big you are its technique and balls that helps you get the guy to the ground. just dont be scared and take them around the legs if thy're big.
@jogo00062 tackle low and hard with your body behind your shoulder and a solid leading leg and have no fear. One of the toughest tacklers in New Zealand domestic rugby for years was a halfback (can't remember his name), and NZ'ers are the kings of the game. Size and strength can help, of course, but technique is the most important part of the tackle. 145 pounds is not small for a 15 year old, particularly if you are on the wing.
@hanros98 Cause we have the Frank Bunce tackling mentality... "if you really want to tackle someone, you'll find a way". This video is more for injury prevention than anything. You can't learn to tackle, it's an attitude.
I play league and this is my second season and my first season was 4 years ago. my first game back I played centre and had a solid girl run through me all day. I've been looking for something like this for the last month (thank god I finally found it) This weekend I'm playing hooker and I'm so gonna try all these technique.... Thanks.
Thanks for the video really helped me. I'm a small guy 5'4 ,120 lb's and I am 15. I'm comfortable with everything in rugby except for tackling and watching this video was the best thing I ever did. well besides actually playing rugby of course! thanks. sincerely,Hurley
its new zeland because you can see the feather in the uniforms and in the wall behind them also because the factions of their bodies and the skin color, obiously not australian
i have this one question the move that u showed at 5:18... wat if that other guy is much more massive (bigger) and u run at him while he is running at u, and u do that wouldnt u get ran over?? becuz u cant really stop the momentom, do i have to like try to twist to the side with him so i'm the one who is going to end up on him.. or is that a bad idea? becuz i'm 150lb and i'm done that to 300lb guys i'm just tryin to be sure here that i wont get seriusly injured next time! thanks! plz reply..
I would suggest, for the bigger guys, maybe making your shoulder content a bit lower on the opposing player (around the hips). That way if his momentum does go forward you can roll backwards onto your back. The bulk of his weight will be on the ground (above your shoulder).
@vovka444 approach in the same way. Punch through to the back and wrap him up and pull towards you. Wrap him up letting him come towards you but not letting him go. Hook your leg around his shin area so he trips, twist to your strong side, and let the momentum drop him to the ground so that you end up on top.
I cried a little when I saw this video....for once, and I never thought it would happen, youtube has actually had an instuctional post that was not a complete shambolic farce. If I want to learn how to knock someone out in rugby, get me a 100 kilo Kiwi that looks like he gets in fights for fun, not some chubby whaler standing in a field in Omaha showing me how to get knocked completely unconscious by a knee (the last vid I saw)....I am pulling it together now...great posting mate!!!
I play high school girls' rugby in the States and my coach always told us to tackle below the hips. Actually, more around the knees to bring them down harder and quicker. Why, at 5:17, is he so high? Is that right, too?
you're right, but actually while you're tackling to the knees, the opponent is able to make a pass easily, that s why it s better to stop your opponent like he is doing, and then slide down to the knees so that you re sure that evrybody fall on the ground... but you also have to look at the weight difference between you and the other, or you could be a little bit shattered...^^
@mcrxloverx92 Try different things. Starting out, you're going to want to get low. It will help you get them down more quickly, especially if they're big girls... you want to wrap up their legs.
If they're smaller, I prefer driving my shoulder into the hips. Both are correct...
i always tackle with perfect technique.. but i still broke my collar bone last game when taking down a guy comming into contact full speed..... if someone knows what to do in case the guy comes into u like a fucking train please tell me
Then something is obviously going wrong. in Rugby you tend to only injure yourself if you're not watching where you are putting your body or your technique is wrong.
When i toured canada and played against your top teams i found that the Centres of all the teams were tackling like it was american football. it was so easy to break the tackle, but most importantly break them, brilliant for a flanker.
how do you tackle, i can assure you it isn't perfect.
hahah funny i actually play in canada and i play as an outside centre...... i try to tackle with all the tips that are given, get low shoulder into bellybutton, wrap legs and drive.... when i broke my collar bone, i ws comming into contact with a fullback returning a kick he got really low and i stuck my collar bone into his shoulder, it was a huge hit, he hurt his neck or something too
good bosh from the full back, surprising! You didn't mean wrap your legs did you?
When an attacker is coming low in, like double bent over, a leg or body tackle is useless. Instead, put your leg out let the body go over it and pull him down by his shirt. he will go over like a falling sack of shit. Thus you will be in a standing position almost immediatly ready to tear the ball off him. if he is the full back the opposition is going to be in serious trouble!!!
Thanks for the advice :)

Woestijnvalk 1 year ago
@Woestijnvalk get them low on the hips there speed will cause them to loose ballance
sfatpaintballer 1 year ago
@Woestijnvalk
try to tackle low and lock down the movement of the opposing player's legs - without legs they cant move.

I am 15 years old, 145 pounds, i have played hooker for a while but there's a strong change that i'll play wing for the next season. I play on a men's team and i am probably the smallest person on any of the teams and i can't tackle these guys worth shit... any advice?
jogo00062 1 year ago
@jogo00062 doesnt matter how big you are its technique and balls that helps you get the guy to the ground. just dont be scared and take them around the legs if thy're big.
TheDicamillo 1 year ago
@jogo00062 Start taking steriods mate.
simonforster1 1 year ago
@jogo00062 tackle low and hard with your body behind your shoulder and a solid leading leg and have no fear. One of the toughest tacklers in New Zealand domestic rugby for years was a halfback (can't remember his name), and NZ'ers are the kings of the game. Size and strength can help, of course, but technique is the most important part of the tackle. 145 pounds is not small for a 15 year old, particularly if you are on the wing.

i have never been taught this, makes you think why new zealanders are so good at rugby
hanros98 1 year ago
@hanros98 Cause we have the Frank Bunce tackling mentality... "if you really want to tackle someone, you'll find a way". This video is more for injury prevention than anything. You can't learn to tackle, it's an attitude.

The only thing he's forgotten is the "afters".
"Ok, now I've got him on the ground, what I wanna do is quickly chew his nose off while the ref's unsighted..."
Know what I mean?

@halifaxtanning or hold him on the ground if he has off loaded...while the ref isnt looking :)

i have this one question the move that u showed at 5:18... wat if that other guy is much more massive (bigger) and u run at him while he is running at u, and u do that wouldnt u get ran over?? becuz u cant really stop the momentom, do i have to like try to twist to the side with him so i'm the one who is going to end up on him.. or is that a bad idea? becuz i'm 150lb and i'm done that to 300lb guys i'm just tryin to be sure here that i wont get seriusly injured next time! thanks! plz reply..
vovka444 2 years ago
I would suggest, for the bigger guys, maybe making your shoulder content a bit lower on the opposing player (around the hips). That way if his momentum does go forward you can roll backwards onto your back. The bulk of his weight will be on the ground (above your shoulder).
I hope that makes sense.
fabiio 2 years ago
First line should read "making your shoulder contact"
fabiio 2 years ago
@vovka444 also you can try to shift his weight left or righr a bit so he wont fall directly on top of you
Ragtag369 2 years ago
@vovka444 approach in the same way. Punch through to the back and wrap him up and pull towards you. Wrap him up letting him come towards you but not letting him go. Hook your leg around his shin area so he trips, twist to your strong side, and let the momentum drop him to the ground so that you end up on top.
KAHUNAGAN 1 year ago
@vovka444 the only problem with this technique is that you lose the contact and they have the advantage of momentum forward.

No worries. Checkout the original website in the vid description. They have more videos etc - good source for info.

I play high school girls' rugby in the States and my coach always told us to tackle below the hips. Actually, more around the knees to bring them down harder and quicker. Why, at 5:17, is he so high? Is that right, too?
mcrxloverx92 2 years ago
you're right, but actually while you're tackling to the knees, the opponent is able to make a pass easily, that s why it s better to stop your opponent like he is doing, and then slide down to the knees so that you re sure that evrybody fall on the ground... but you also have to look at the weight difference between you and the other, or you could be a little bit shattered...^^
Froikable 2 years ago
Either way is correct, as long as you get them to the ground :)
If you go low, you can drop them straight to the ground. However their arms are free to offload the ball.
If you go above the knees, you can drive their body backwards behind the advantage line.
fabiio 2 years ago
@mcrxloverx92 Try different things. Starting out, you're going to want to get low. It will help you get them down more quickly, especially if they're big girls... you want to wrap up their legs.
If they're smaller, I prefer driving my shoulder into the hips. Both are correct...

blotercraze 2 years ago
i`dont speek english well so check my video from winter tackle training.
at 0: 27 there is perfect "side tackle"... we use this technique do takedown spirnters.
i set my opponnent to good way, than do step a side from his road... grab his legs one hand, spin around and tackle him from side...
my movie will tell you this in better way. ; )
ruggerdrift 2 years ago
hey thanks i watched the side tackle, it looks effective, i cant wait to try it out once i can come out to the field again
elmariachidelmal4 2 years ago
@elmariachidelmal4
Then something is obviously going wrong. in Rugby you tend to only injure yourself if you're not watching where you are putting your body or your technique is wrong.
When i toured canada and played against your top teams i found that the Centres of all the teams were tackling like it was american football. it was so easy to break the tackle, but most importantly break them, brilliant for a flanker.
how do you tackle, i can assure you it isn't perfect.
circesprophecy 2 years ago
hahah funny i actually play in canada and i play as an outside centre...... i try to tackle with all the tips that are given, get low shoulder into bellybutton, wrap legs and drive.... when i broke my collar bone, i ws comming into contact with a fullback returning a kick he got really low and i stuck my collar bone into his shoulder, it was a huge hit, he hurt his neck or something too
elmariachidelmal4 2 years ago
@elmariachidelmal4
good bosh from the full back, surprising!
