I think the visual use of the cross was a great way to symbolicly represent and remember the Lord's moment of sacrifice for all mankind's salvation in a way that avoids any ambiguity or misinterpretation of message or meaning. For Christians, displaying a cross or fish (Matthew 4:18-20) is not an object of worship but is a reminder of His sacrifice or signifier of Christian affiliation. He suffered so that we could be free (Matthew 8:17-18).
