Im saying he is better than Yngwie - far less predictable, and a jazz-tinged edginess that just cant be as easily replicated... This guy is amazing...
There have been alot of players in the SpotLight column, Yngwie, Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert, Tony MacAlpine, Jennifer Batten, Mark St. John (KISS). That's just the ones I remeber off the top of my head.
Yngwie was the 1st to break through in Mike Varney's Guitar Player Spotlight column. After profiling him he invited him to California from Sweden. The next shred guy to break through was Tony Macalpine. Also in Varney's column. Afterwards less than a year later was Vinnie. Also in Varney's column! Seeing a pattern here? He actually stayed at Tony's apt. and used Tony's amps while recording. Tony played all the keyboards on Vinnie's 1st lp.
Wow. Although I know T Mac played keys on Mind's Eye, I never knew Moore bunked with Tony, much less used his amps, during the recording phase. I sure wish I had your information source. Very interesting.
At the time Tony's rig consisted of a 80's Peavey head set clean with a distortion box for all the dirty sounds. I also remember that Tony liked Mega Drive Dimarzio pickups and Vinnie liked Dimarzio Double Whammy pickups for the bridge and Al DiMeoola for the neck. That Double Whammy pickup is very cool. Alot of midrange and bass with the treble rolled off, I bought one in the 80's because of Vinnie. Still have it!
On VM's first solo efforts he was VERY influenced by YM. Have you heard "Mind's Eye"? He of course though like you said doesn't sound exactly like Yngwie but he came from that school of lightning arpeggios and counterpoint.
I agree with, Vinnie sounds nothing like Yngwie. Although his 1st 2 lp's he played alot of harmonic minor that is the only simularities.I hear alot of Al Dimeola in his playing but Vinnie's defintely his own man with some unique note choices!
Even thought i absolutely love Yngwie, Vinnie is soooo not a desciple of Yngwie. Doesn't sound the same, doesn't play the same genre, different everything, other than they both play fast.
why does everyone only seem to have one all time favorite guitarist etc?
I can understand liking them for different reasons but "this guy is better than that guy" is like "donuts are better than ferraris..."
