  • I can't believe people are STILL arguing over "which is better," Cinematic Titanic or RiffTrax. Maybe it's a product of A/B 'thought process' here in the US -- along the same lines of why there are only two main political parties..?

I'm personally grateful and overjoyed that the concept & spirit of riffing cheesy movies hasn't fallen by the wayside. Joel and The Brains: thank you for inspiring at least a few of us to follow our creative dreams. Oh, and to laugh about love. Again. :)

  • IMO the writing of Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic are both great, but the RT guys are better performers with better voices. And CT has too many people and is too complicated. After watching Rifftrax first I can't watch this at all.

  • It's like the remake of Whose Line (Drew Carey's Improvaganza)

    The original is usually better....

  • Rifftrax is a lot more accessible than this. I can just go there, flip through my DVD collection to find a suitable title, and download the track for a couple of U.S dollars.

  • 13 people's cars really milked their death scenes.

  • This unfortunately lacks the same punch as MST3K, which is surprising since there's 5 cast members though I never cared for Weinstein because he reminds me of the nerdy idiot from the Red Green Show. Pehl is alright but makes it obvious that she's reading lines. Other than the fact that it needs better/more jokes and would look better with the old theater layout, the rest of the show is fine.

  • It's so good to see Joel doing his thing again, but in my opinion, without Mike as a writer, Cinematic Titanic just can't beat Rifftrax. My only other gripe is that there's too many riffers on the screen at once, which makes the development of each person's unique style take much longer.

  • @NicosProductions - i'd agree with that assessment. what i do enjoy about CT is that they continue to riff b-movies. RT has better jokes IMO though. though i died at the "they ransacked my apartment!" hahaha

  • @NicosProductions agreed, but it kind of shows you their own individual styles, and pick out what jokes who wrote on MST3K

  • @darthaardvark Red herring, man. I never said certain jokes were better than others, I said that the quality of Mike's jokes is better as a whole. This change in quality is apparent, especially on seasons 6 and on. Also, Mike was the head writer for a while, even while Joel was host. Regarding individual styles; I never said that the CT cast doesn't have them, I simply stated that with five riffers on screen at once, their styles will take longer to develop.

  • I love both endeavours of mike a joel, but it seems rifftrax is more economically viable.

If only cinematic titanic had silhouettes like the theatre seats in mst, I'd watch it 24/7.

  • Saw the gang perform this live at the Summer Festival in Ann Arbor. It was hilarious, though surprisingly bloody!

  • I have to see the whole thing, if I can last that long before passing out from laughing.

  • I saw them LIVE:)

  • Silhouettes and bad B-movies, how I've missed this format. Thank you for bringing it back! It was greatly missed.

  • well what do you know? skant detector really works

  • "if you could see the look on whats left of your face..." ... thats fuckin priceless.

  • "They ransacked my apartment!!"

That line nearly gave me a hernia.

  • Now, with this MST3k "revival", it´s Joel´s change to do "Daniel der Zauberer", the worst film of all times!! And let´s not forget "City of the living dead" - the stupidest horror-film ever...

PS:I´ve seen "Oozing skull", but the skull isn´t oozing at all! What the...

  • @YoureAtTheWongPlace I'll have to disagree with your City of the Living Dead statement.

Any film with a gut-puking scene is most certainly NOT stupid, my friend!

  • --- what good are gore scenes embedded in a Stevie Wonder cutting ;o)

  • It's weird how they are seated but still funny although not as funny as the theater

  • "Oh good! They brought stiffy-pop!" XD

  • Considering they've all worked together for MST3K 20th anniversary stuff lately, I don't think we have to worry about their being a "feud" between different MST3K folks.

I just love that we have TWO options available now, and that they're unique from one another.

  • Clearly they get on, what with Mary Jo featuring on Rifftrax...

One can only hope that the whole gang will get back together, if only for one last time.

I'd love to see Josh and Bill as Servo and Crow, or Gypsy and Magic Voice (Mary Jo) riffing a short film. And of course, Joel and Mike riffing together, but that's obvious. =3

  • On the MST3K I always leaned more towards the Mike era than Joel, but I think Cinematic Titanic might just be a little better than Rifftrax. It might be because I missed the silhouettes, or just TV's Frank.

  • I've only seen clips from rifftrax and it's very funny, but I'm just not interested in watching most of the movies they riff. I'm more interested in checking out the Film Crew because they seem to make fun of the old, crappy films like MST3K and Cinematic Titanic.

  • Awesome!

  • I like the cool, sixties spy look to the new show - very new millenium.

  • i dont understand why you guys cant just do the bots over again.

  • Yeah, I loved the bots!

  • Skank detector works *snort*

Have to say I miss the bots, but I'm so glad to see Joel and the old gang back!

  • OH wow. Its like MST3K reborn.

But without Kevin Murphy (Servo). Shoot. For that matter, Mike Nelson would be good in this, too.

And to be honest... I really don't care much for Mary Jo Pehl's voice.

Awesome to see TVs Frank back! And Dr. Erhardt! Together!

  • Mike is doing Rifftrax with Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett. Otherwise they might have appeared. It's like the MST3K group are competitors now or something

  • Yes it's very strange. Methinks the onlyone who has done rifftrax and cinematic titanic is Mary Jo. I was looking at the torrents and they (titanics) had notes about spamming and 'putting a stop too' rifftrax. very very strange. just like Joel vs. Mike back in the early 90's

  • wonder why they can't just get the band back together...

  • the format and set up of the sihouettes do not work. neither does having that woman who played pearl contributing voice work. it was better when simpler with 3 voices rather than 5.

  • I love you guys. That's really all that I need to say :)

  • Couldn't they just sit in movie seats?

  • Cinematic Titanic is great and all but I can't watch it without hearing a voice in my head constantly repeating "I wish this was MST3K. Dear God, I wish this was MST3K!"

  • @VlsraWratS Me too!

  • @VlsraWratS You're so right...Joel and the 'Bots. Turn your lights down (where applicable). Cue music. "In the not too distant future...!"

  • Everything these guys (and girl) do is FANTASTIC. I love it without reservation. If you have any sense you will too! But then I'm on barbituates.

  • i'm gonna see this saturday! i can't wait

  • Hmmm I dont think this really works well. The setting and all. I dont like the way it looks and I also think there is way to many people riffing on a movie. 3 is enuff.

  • "... and makes a Slinkety sound..."

  • Heh, The funny thing (besides this clip) is I can forsee a division in the MST3K fan base, half for the Cinematic Titanic, the rest for Rifftracks. In my opinion, I will contiune to love both along with MST3K ^_^

  • More like there's a rift among Mike and Joel (mostly Joel kicking himself for getting out of it before). I think us fans will continue to lovingly support each side.

  • Trace: "That car is REALLY milking it's death scene."

He almost sounded like Crow there. ^_^

  • the weird set up doesn't make sense to me. why not just use theater seating like MST3K?

  • Copywrite issues - the theater seating is a MST trademark. Also a lot of the cast members had a problem with how MST changed when it went to the SciFi channel (e.g. scripted jokes instead of off the cuff among other issues which contributed to why so many left in the first place) so they deliberately wanted this to have a different feel.

  • "If you could see the look on what's left of your face. Priceless!"

  • "Well, what do you know? Skank detector works!!"

  • Reminds me too much of Mystery Science Theater 3,000 (Which I love)

  • that's exactly what it is . same people

  • I just bought the movie. It's so awesome. I can't wait to get the others. I was amazed how fast the DVD burned. I guess because it's already in DVD format. You don't have to convert anything. What I really liked was how EZ something, whatever that company is called, has a built in DVD burning program. It burns the whole movie in under 10 minutes. I was like, no way it's finished. But it was and worked perfect. Awesome stuff

  • When we be able to order this DVD in Canada???

  • When someone rips it and uploads it

  • Tom Servo curses ye! A pox upon thee and that miserable Wall-E droid! I actually met him and we had drinks with out in Cassiopeia 9. Not so funny.

  • It's good to see that Joel hasn't changed from the lovable tired-eyed Gizmonic employee. It's kind of sad that Nelson isn't in this one, though.

  • I don't think they really speak anymore, dude

  • I definitely loved this! The only person whose lines I would consider slightly weak (but still funny) were Mary Jo's... but that could have just been un-luck of the draw. Trace and Joel really shine through (as expected), but Josh and Frank are hilarious too!

  • TV's Frank finally gets to rip up the movies, not just doing host segments. Great to see Trace and Joel again.

  • This makes me too happy for words.

It's so good to see (well, hear, actually) Joel again!

And how I missed the comedic genius that is Trace Beaulieu: "They ransacked my apartment!" Brilliant!

  • cat stevens nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

oh how I missed those lines.

  • I loved the riffing in this movie! Can't wait for the next one! =)

  • To funny. I loved MST3K. The best show and funniest show ever. I never fail to laugh out loud

  • the classics is backsics!!! awesome

  • Does anyone know if there is bad blood between Joel Hodgson and Mike Nelson? If not, those two need to get together again, as well as the whole crew. Why not? We need this type of comedy now more then ever. It would be heaven on earth!

  • I really hope not. been trying to find that out myself.

  • Mike Nelson is doing RiffTrax.

  • Mike, Kevin and Paul are doing the Film Crew too. So yeah every one is back with not 1

    MST3k BUT 2!!!

  • @OxbowisaMstie: Er, Mike, Kevin, and BILL are doing Film Crew. Well, actually, they haven't done that in a while, they've been focusing more on RiffTrax. Paul (as in Paul Chaplin) WAS working with Jim Mallon on some stuff at the new official MST3K site, but it looks like they're renovating that site right now.

And now you know, and knowing is half the battle. :)

  • "Always look your best, that's my motto."

  • Dammit, can't the whole gang just pool their money and buy back the rights to MST3k and start that up again, in DVD form? Rifftrax and this feel like cold, stale leftovers. I miss the bots and the S.O.L.

  • I love these guys! This is the greatest (besides MST3K, that is)!

  • "Oh good, they brought Stiffy Pop!"

  • mmmmmmm Stifffy Pop!!!!

  • Oh,GAWD---are we now going to turn the coexistance of Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic into some New York vs. New Jersey/Kirk vs. Picard/potatos vs. stuffing/shirts vs. skins/butter-side-up vs. butter-side-down ultimately pointless RIVALRY??!!??

Can't we all just get along?

  • Yeah, no kidding....one thing's for sure, I'm gonna start buying stuff from both groups.

  • I think that would be amazing lol....i am crossing my fingers!

  • It's just nice to hear Joel ripping on a movie again. "If you could see the look on what's left of your face".

    O captain my captain.

  • I'll stand for that!!

  • TV's FRANK!!!! (yeah i missed joel too)

  • tvs frank hell ya. between him and trace it was the greatest duo ever!

  • You said it Daddy O!

  • "They ransacked my apartment!"

    XD

  • Eh, RiffTrax are the heir apparent to MST3K. This is ...really bland.

  • I hope you are actually commenting on the DVD. Because critiquing a trailer is just moronic.

  • classic reminds me of MSTK3000, back in the old days, i guess they got bored and made this new show

  • Is this going to be released widely on DVD?

  • "Bad films are enjoyable on their own, without unfunny comments for the hard of thinking."

No they're not, the best watched with some friends preferably stoned. The comments are pretty witty, they aint all winners, but I laughed.

  • Then we agree. I commented on watching these movies "on their own" (ie: without additional audio commentary on the soundtrack), not "on your own". So it's always preferable to watch them with friends.

  • INDEED. And when (-sniff-) you have no friends and I'n not mentioning any names that rhyme with CallsHacBlammer - It's fun to have a couple on the DVD with you.

  • lol, my sister said the same thing when i forced her to watch Boggy Creek II (MST3K)

"well, they can't all be winners.."

and bad movies are definitely better with the commentary ON, MST3K is the best, followed by CinTit, and film crew isnt really that good at all but... its still 3rd.

unless you do have some friends to watch it with, baked like you said, and those friends are good at riffing movies in real time, then commentary is OFF. esp. this way you can riff "good" movies

  • Maybe (just maybe) this person is being ironic. To wit, notice this excerpt from the "history of the show" page 3 at mst3kinfo website (1988 KTMA episode one): "The station received some complaints from people who did not catch on to the concept and were irritated by the 'immature junior high kids' (as one caller dubbed them) talking over the movie." But it is nice to see some different opinions, whatever I personally think.

  • Awesome, except the setup on the shadows is kind of distracting and I could do without Mary Jo.

  • her voice annoys me. she is the robin quivers of cinematic titanic

  • What "Good fellas" scene is Frank talking about?

  • i think it was the scene where henry and his girlfriend go underneath the club and get the best seat in the house

  • cant really compare mike and joel, mike is a little bit country, and joel is a bit rock n roll.

  • WHAT! how do you come to that conclusion!

  • They ransacked my apartment! LOL

  • I recognize Joel, Frank, and Mary Jo here, but who are the other two guys?

  • Trace Beaulieu and also Josh "J Elvis" Weinstein

(Dr Erhardt from the first season)

  • Ah, I don't think I ever saw the first season. :P No wonder I didn't recognize the 5th guy as Trace, he doesn't say anything till the last few seconds. *l*

  • I still can't believe they got Josh Weinstein in for this. Not that I was ever a big fan, but with Rifftrax this really makes it like 1990 MST vs. 1999 MST...but then you have Mary Jo, which is kind of strange. Still, Joel fans and Mike fans, its time to fight to the death!

  • I would so enjoy a Joel and Mike fight to the death... but only if they turned it into a Star Trek TOS style battle.

  • well, great! now were gonna have a whole new round of the "joel, mike, joel, mike" thing. look folks; could we maybe just bypass it this time and get strait to what's really important: "josh, kevin, josh, kevin"!?

really though, thanks for doing this guys & gal, i'm looking forward to basking in it's snarky glory.

  • Can't wait! I don't know about the props, but I'll watch it regardless. When does this air?

  • Like the two sided approach and what seems to be the more frequent and dramatic use of props.

  • I love it! It's great seeing you guys together again and I really enjoy the format of all five of you on screen. More episodes, PLEASE!!

  • Looks good Joel, can't wait to see the whole thing!

  • This is SO awesome! The world needs some more DEEP HURTING! Stay frosty guys!

  • Joel, Thank you so much for bringing it back, I have been a dedicated fan since 1991. Love the promo, Im looking forward to more :-).

Though I have to admit getting use to the new shadow style you have going on is a little hard but no biggie, I think its hilarious.

Thanks again for keeping this all alive.

  • Its over honey, get used to it.

  • MST3K is over. But it has now lead to Film Crew, Rifftrax, and now Cinematic Titanic. I bet you haven't seen any of them. Your loss.

  • I have checked them out, but the original formula is gone, so you can either accept the new incarnation for what it is or move on and not bitch in the comments;P

  • > I have checked them out, but the original

    > formula is gone

I nearly busted my gut watching the rifftrax version of Star Trek Generations and Battle Field Earth. Maybe it's not exactly the same, but hell if it isn't funny.

I couldn't sit through all of Battle Field Earth until I found the riff trax, I've always slightly wondered how it ended.

  • The Film Crew is basicly MST3k ver. 2. It's the same formula without the silhouettes. Cinimatic Titanic, while I haven't seen the episode yet (still searching for it to buy or download or stream, please let me know if you know) it seems Cinimatic Titanic is MST3k vol. 3. Old cheesy movies riffed on by the old crew with silhouettes. I'm looking forward to this greatly!

  • but none of them has the cheap sci-fi feeling to it which I loved about MST3K

  • hey joel, I remember your stand up stuff, like the "johnny secret agent" bit. rock on.

  • "That car is really milkin' it's death scene."

  • Can't we all just agree that our lives would be worth NOTHING if it weren't for MST3K and all it gave us?

P.S. Joel, I want you to have my children. Honestly, I just can't take of them anymore.

  • Excellent work to all of those involved.

I'm just curious if there's some rift between those involved in this and those on the other side of things. Namely Mike,

Bill, and of course the great Kevin Murphy. I'd love to see those guys involved in some capacity. Rifftrax is good, but this looks way more promising.

  • I think both project have their upsides. With Nelson's, he can riff on any movie and not have to worry about copyrights. But this brings back fond memories of MST3K.

  • They are currently involved in to projects, one being rifftrax, another being "the film crew" were you can once again buy full dvds with there commentary, however sadly there are no silhouettes.

Glad to see theres life after mst3k for everyone. and I hope I help out a bit

  • If you buy the DVDs you definitely help. The gang will make new episodes as long as the fans (new and originals) support the show. This is capa

  • LMAO! I have got to see this!

  • Gang, this whole thing is REALLY, REALLY GOOD! From this clip I thought the silhouettes would be intrusive, but they make the movie seem BIGGER--that gap in the middle makes it feel more full. It's like they are comedic scientists (which they are), analyzing this foreign visualization, all bouncing riffs off each other. The movie seems bigger, and the riffs ARE bigger. Killer comeback, Joel!

  • Not only do you bring us more long awaited movie riffing, but you also throw in boom lifts and large scale shadow props on a soundstage full of funny, talented people?! This is more than ever could have been dreamed of in 1999.

Joel, Buddy, your particular brand of thoughtful yet totally oddball humor has been sorely lacking for too long. I am so glad you are still in the business of entertainment!

    HODGSON AND COMPANY FOREVER.

    YOU ARE LEGION.

    I EXPECT YOU.

  • if this is a sign of things to come, then HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!

  • i love this, but mike always did it more for me.

there's a new group doing dvd movies called incognito cinema warriors xp that's almost as good as mst3k and they do good pupperty and stuff.

can't wait for my cinematic titantic dvd!

  • OH...... HELL...... YEA!!!!

  • This show is gonna ROCK

  • I love it! This is very exciting. Any fellow MST3K fans in or near Los Angeles?

  • where's Crow and Tom??? Gotta have them!!!!

  • THANK YOU ALMIGHTY GOD!!!!

  • I'm getting this, no doubt about it! :) I've been an MST3K fan Since Turkey Day 1994!

  • *ahem*

WE gather together to watch cheesy movies

On C&*%& C!@*#&#$ on thanksgiving day

at Mystery Science *gasp* Theater 3000

It's 30 straight hours and it's called Turkey Dayeeeeeee!

Sorry, I've had that stuck in my head for about 15 years and it was dying to get out.

  • XD Woot!

  • I don't know, personally I think SOMETHING'S missing. There's like a spark that isn't there...

I dunno, maybe the shadows are too invasive, or maybe there's a spice missing in the commentaries...

  • I know what you mean, this is missing something. Maybe it's the writing, if you remember Mike was the head writter and he's absent. I don't know, it also seems like Joel started this back up only to make money (All the people on here, accept for Mary Jo, left MST3K to pursue their own thing) and, as I've heard, Joel didn't even like hosting. Personally, I just miss the theater set up! Simple, yet functional (But this is my same gripe with RiffTrax :P)

  • Yes, but then again I feel more comfortable listening to Rifftrax. Well, besides that it's really a bother to time the two together...

  • There's a player that Rifftrax offers now (for free) that synchs up the movie and audio track.

  • Look it's just different and if people expect the same MST3K they will be disappointed. It looks good to me although I will miss the outer space angle but I think the commentary will be just as witty. You know it's the same principle, same people, but not exactly the same show and that's why for fans like us it will take some getting used to because we expect Crow T. Robot and all of that.

  • You people who keep posting 'Mike was head writer' don't know what a head writer is, and don't know the history of MST3K. The head writer doesn't write all the jokes. It's mainly clerical. They write down and organize all the jokes that are made. And MST3K was funny before Mike joined. Mike is great and all, but too many of you only see him as important b/c you came in after Joel left. He created the show and is the brains and heart behind it.

  • He only started hosting at Joel left, he was still writing before that (And no one said they didn't like Joel, I think he's hilarious). That doesn't matter, though, if someone feels there's something missing then there is something missing, you can't argue over someones feelings. That's what's beautiful about comedy, it's not singular. We all have our own ideas of what's funny, not one truth.

  • Mike was head writer from day 1. Mike was with the show MST3K from day 1.

  • braniac, I like how you rip on people for not knowing the history of MST3k, yet you didn't know Mike Nelson was with MST3k from the beginning.

Back on topic, WELCOME BACK JOEL!

  • So you've completely forgetten about the KTMA period?

  • You know, if you even mention the subject of Mike vs. Joel on any reputable MST3K forum or usenet group, you will get the shit flamed out of you.

    For good reason.

    Drop it.

  • Cat Stevens, NO!

  • that made me crack up!

  • Bring back the robots, stop messing with the obvious.

  • Yeah, there's just something missing without Crow and Servo, and even Gypsy. But I'm glad they're able to do this in the first place.

  • yup, definitely needs the bots back.

  • I'd much rather they be sitting on the bottom, but I should just be grateful it's back at all. Also, CAT STEVENS, NO!

  • There are no words for how much I love hearing these voices again.

Joel's best work since TV Wheel.

We needed this. It was time.

  • Wow, this is actually really cool - they kind of reinvented MST3K. Love it!

  • I'd be on board with ordering the DVD. I'd love to talk about you guys in a future episode of my show, and use clips from this trailer. I'll make sure to get the permission I need before doing so. Great job, guys. It's nice to see you all together again. Take care.

  • As far as price, let's see. Drop 20+ to go on a date to a film where you CAN'T talk over it; or pay 15 and own the film where talking is encouraged.

    I'm for the latter.

And as far as a rift or problems between Mike and Joel, I think its just a case of Mike remained in the Midwest, along with Kevin; whereas the CT crew all have been involved with Hollywood as writers/directors/producers of television. I think its nothing more than just locale.

  • I'm waiting to see what the price for the UK release will be like before I add my thoughts... I'm looking forward to it though, I just really want to hear what Joel and Mike think of each other's stuf right now...

  • Due to rights issue, you should be able to download it sometime in April or later... if you can wait.

  • part of me wants to scream like a little kid and say NO! I can't wait!

But then the annoying grown up says that I've waited this long for some kind of return to MST3K, so I can wait a bit longer, I suppose.

Oh, but then there's the 20-something cynic who thinks that the entire thing will have been posted on the internet by then and I won't have to worry!

  • I can't wait for this to appear in my mailbox.

Well ok, I CAN wait, I just don't want to.

  • This kicks ass! I can't wait till it arrives.

Love the music, hope its the theme.

  • Joel, how's the 'bots

  • True Misties have been waiting for many years for a real movie riffing system. Rifftrax is great, but I truly miss the silhouettes, and real production values. How can you say 15$ is too much, thats crazy, thats about 4 gallons of gas. Rhino home video was charging around 25$ at one point for one episode of MST3k This is the only reunion we will get to see, so for all you haters just don't watch it or buy it. I for one will support in any way

  • True Misties? You're forgetting that Mike Nelson was the head writer on the show. I'm not bagging on CT, since I have yet to see the first episode, but I think they're missing a key element and that element is Mike Nelson.

  • (I think that the "real movie riffing system" was referring to the silhouettes?) If you want some Mike, go check out Rifftrax. Personally, I don't think that CT is going to suffer at all from the lack of Mike.

  • Five stars based on past glory. Otherwise...

As much as I love the old MST3K days, this TITANIC project simply costs too much. A burned DVD in a sleeve for $15? Come on. I would consider paying $10-$12 for a pressed DVD in a substantial case with extras. I buy every PIXAR movie for about that much. I won't be buying this project at this price.

I predict piracy will damage sales to the point at which Joel and company will throw in the towel early.

  • This is all kinds of YES.

  • Take that , un-funny Jim Mallon!

  • yeaaaaah trace is the final one in the preview.

one of the funniest ones too. daaaaang I cant wait for mine to arrive

  • Bill Corbett is taunting you guys!
