If the Mini can sell in the US, so can the 500. The 500 is essential just Fiat's answer to BMW's Mini. Actually it is not that small at all. Not if you compare it with something like the Toyota iQ.
Chrysler's demise was by it's own hand..They keep making unreliable shitboxes for a long time, so therefore, people lost confidence in it's products, and switched to proven reliable Japanese cars..It's as simple as that
Theres no doubt that the Fiat 500, with its chic, cheeky good looks, is one of the best looking cars on the road, but the NRMA in Australia has revealed its also the safest car in its class and the only one to get a three star rating when it comes to avoiding blind spots, with intelligent design making it as easy to see out of, as it is great to look at.
The Fiat 500 may rate five stars in the EuroNCAP crash testing, but its better to avoid the accident in the first place, says Andrei Zaitzev, General Manager for Fiat in Australia. So thats why Fiat have minimised blind spots and their skill in this task has been recognized by the NRMA, providing yet another reason to own a Fiat 500!
The ratings highlight the risks posed when a driver simply cannot see hazards due to the shape and design of their cars. The testing involved rotating a laser 180 degrees from the drivers seat to replicate a drivers vision. The scores were calculated by taking into account the position of the windscreen pillars (where the windscreen meets the side window) and how much each blocked the laser. The NRMA tested 138 new vehicles.
I partially agree with you. Alfa Romeo cars are engineering masterpieces, but there are several Fiat models (Bravo, Grande Punto, 500) that are great cars too...
I was thinking that the failing company was Crysler...you don't know anything about Fiat, I understand...Do you really think that a failing company could buy 35% of a worlwide car manufactor? Fiat is the 4th car group in Europe, remember...

the chrysler CEO didn't seem that enthused jumping out of that box w/wheels. the car is ugly and it's not going sell well. the obama administration wants us to be modelled after the europeans. now all we have to do is build and effil tower in the heart of manhattan run these ugly cars around it and scream, "VIVA LA FRANCE!!"
the car is so ugly that won tons of design awards...do you know where it won the last? In this NY car show...please inform yourself, and don't judge a car that is worldwide reknowed as "Bellissima"

@klubmix: i don't give a damn what that car is named. it's ugly and only you europeans would drive in those micro-sized deathtraps. the volkswagen BEETLE is far superior and better looking too. americans like cars with style and substance not rolling coffins.
DEATH TRAPS? check out the crash test against the giant Q7 SUV, then tell me it's a death trap! And style? IT JUST WON THE WORLD DESIGN CAR OF THE YEAR!
This is possibly the most bigot and ignorant post you can get in 500 words
try to do some research. The fiat has SEVEN airbags as standard, and a strong enough chassis that in a crash with any normal height american car it's not going to crumple up before the other car does. And if one of those enormous trucks with bumpers mounted too high to have any use you guys drive hits you...well, you're going to die no matter what you're driving.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Imagine a motor vehicle accident between a "Cinque-cento" and even a box truck.(not to mention all the millions of other trucks on the road) The survivability of the occupants of this vehicle would be almost nil. "Smart Cars"...Aren't.
These small car are actually very safe. The only worry i have is the wight factor and even that part is addressed in the crash testing of these cars. If you have a chance to look at the 5th gear clips where they crash test these sub compact car, you will see that they are not that badly engineered. Of course I wouldn't trade my Commander for one of theses
Nor should you. Since implementing C.A.F.E standards, it's estimated around 45,000 traffic fatalities have occured that would not have had the passengers been in more substantial cars. I had a Austin Mini Cooper S...Freakin' great car, and lots of fun. I used to run it in time-trials. I wouldn't drive my Mini on the street, I wouldn't even drive one of the new "Minis". If you are that concerned w/fuel efficiency, get a Motorcycle. Your odds are about the same. Fun on the track, but unsafe.
I don't know about a motorcycle, i still would rather be surrounded by metal rather than my own flesh. I would like slightly better millage out of my commander, however I did not purchase the car bc of its gas millage. Better fuel efficiency can be accommodated by a diesel engine. Hopefully soon they will offer a diesel option for Jeep
You don't even know what you're talking about!!!! Fiat 500 scored 5/5 stars in the EuroNCAP's crash tests, while Chrysler Voyager scored 1.5/5. This means that if a Fiat 500 hits a Voyager at 55 mph, the 500's occupants won't even get hurt, while Voyager's driver dies! 500 is one of the safest car in the world despite the size. DON'T BE PREJUDICED. ITALIANS DO IT BETTER!!!!
I AM Italian. If you read my comments above, it will be apparent to you that I do in fact know what I'm talking about. A quinquecento vs one of the millions of F-150s on the road today...= death. My family owned Fiats, I grew up in sportscars. Every one of my comments is valid regardless of EuroNCAP. There are more, and larger vehicles on US roads and highways. Deal with it. It's "what is" that people need to reckon with...not fantasy.
You're still demonstrating that you don't know what you're talking about!!!! EuroNCAP's crash tests are performed launching the car against a WALL!!!! Do you think an F-150 is tougher than a reinforced concrete wall? No, really...you're not sane if you think that weight is the only parameter you need to evaluate a car's safety performance! What I'm telling you is a fact, not an opinion. Just take a look at the Euro NCAP website!
Yeah, I'll do that...and ignore the actual NTSB statistics. Read my 1st comment, which was downrated out of existance for whatever reason. I'll make you a deal: Let's put it to the test...Me in a Ford F-150 and you in the Cinquecento, and let's see who eats their dinner through a straw that night. Either way, why is it that Fiat, Peugot, Renault, ect.. pulled out of the American markets over 2 decades ago? America isn't France, and no amount of wishing on your part will make it so.
They have just as many large SUVs in europe as they do here in NA so presumably people would not want to buy renault and fiat 'deathtraps' over there either. Anyway, the 500 would be suitable for a city car, or for going to work; every vehicle doesn't have to be able to haul lumber from the local Home Depot.
What a nice thing to say to a total stranger, cannuck. Apparently, you and LXND either have reading difficulties, or personality defects that need to be improved upon. Anyone reading this thread will see jackjohns01 and I were having a polite discussion and you 2 decided that it would be fun to attack a total stranger and call him names. I posted facts, and a proposition. You posted invective and insults. Your comment is more a reflection on your poor manners than anything. We're done here.
The point here is that you're keeping on supporting a prejudice without accepting any proof of the contrary. This is a stupid attitude indeed! I recognize that this must be a widely accepted prejudice in USA as bigger vehicles need way more fuel and this is good for your economy, but it's not good for our Earth. Of course, saying that 500 is safe doesn't mean that all the other small cars are safe too. But this is true for every type of vehicle. You must judge safety on a case by case basis!
Not true. I refer you to my 1st comment on this video. Then, read the thread. Then, I suugest you watch the AP video posted today which is nearly a verbatim endorsement of my comments here. They even point to larger Hybrid vehicles which get Better mileage w/out sacrificing safety, so that throws your other argument out too. Move this discussion there if you have the courage to debate honestly.
Hey cannuck, why don't you check out the AP story posted today about compact cars and their poor safety record...then, I suggest you crawl back under whichever rock you lurk under. "breathtakingly stupid." Yep, that describes you perfectly.
You mustn't have much of a life to be so fixated on proving your thesis to total stangers on youtube. I pity you, wideawake. Strictly talking physics, it's obvious that larger cars must be safer simply owing to the greater mass in the crumple zones. But small cars have been shown to be more nimble and have better visibility so that they tend to be involved in fewer accidents overall...I read that in a car revue out of the UK which I don't have handy for posting. Enjoy driving your SUV.
Your comment, which is more of an ad hominem attack actually... would have more weight if you had had the courage to post it, along with your now debunked and refuted argument on the other video, which you avoided in this cowardly fashion. The fact is, I forgot all about you, and this video. Since you brought it up, why don't you go show everyone your new clothes over there Emperor cannuckistan?

All you need is a dynamic economy for both.

So, we're definitely in the age of Fiat based on Marc Faber's learned view.

That is the latest video from AP on small vehicle safety ratings. Why don't you post your attack on me there.
