hahahahaha i got a mint condition 1985 honda z50r for 25 dollars and it runs and all i had to do was put some gas in after i cleaned the gas tank with all the stock parts there already it just needs a paint job

Not bolt on. You need to cut the mounts 3/16 on each side, and weld a tab for the brakes to mount to. That's the minimum. I always cut off the extra mounts and smooth them out so it's looks better.

Yes it is. Well, at least it was when the video was made. I painted the frame and swapped a whole lot of parts from other bikes and years, so it doesn't look much like a 1979 Z50R. Since this video was made, I bent the frame in a crash and replaced it with a 1984 frame.

My 79 Z50 is running very weird.  It will run for a few minutes then it stops and wont start again for 10-20 minutes. I've changed the oil and cleaned the carb. Do you have any idea what could be wrong?

Make sure the gas cap is venting or a low pressure area will occur in the tank; this stops fuel flow or restricts it to a slow drip. Also check the float and needle to make sure they are free to move.

I just picked up a 79 Z50 today for $150. I didn't think it would run but I put some gas in and it fired right up.  What kind of performance exhaust would you recommend?

Only one I've tried is the Pro Circuit pipe. But Honda Trail Bikes just released theirs, Fast 50's makes one, and if you want to pay for it, there are many options from Japan.

Yes. Keep in mind that CRF stock springs are 1/2 inch longer than Z stock springs. So +1 springs for a CRF are +1.5 for a Z50R.

Nice Z. I have an 86R I am planning to work on over the winter. I was hoping you could tell me about your extended swing arm. I can't really make out what it comes off of. I thought you may have said an XR 75...Is that so? Also, for the extended chromoly fork legs, you mentioned that they were off of a crf.....Caqn you tell me the year, or does it not matter?

Yes XR75. You need to grind the mounts to fit it to the Z frame. Also, you need to weld a tab for the rear brake panel to slide over. All CRF/XR50 extended forks will work. The XR/CRF/Z forks all interchange.

Great looking bike. I got an 80 Z50 but in not so good condition. Also got a 73 Z50 and 73 QA50 all in parts. Always had a love for Honda mini bikes since I was young and could only watch the rich kids ride them.

just to let you know, a CR is 2 stroke, the piston wouldn't fit in the cylinder and 2 strokes don't have cam shafts or valves

Nice pair of wheels. I am currently restoring (2) 1979 Z50R. My only problem is trying to get the gas tank. No authorized stockist can get it; yet it still made for the Honda Monkey domestic market in Japan. Go figure.
