She really IS spectacular! I am so glad players like Barbara, along with Joey DeFrancesco are still out there keeping the jazz organ featured! It is an instrument that is not used NEARLY enough in jazz!
I would like to see her walk into a room, be offered a drink, have the waiter pull out the chair for her and watch her march to the stage to stun the sterotype audience
"Strange audience" ..perhaps, but I found that with jazz/instrumental musicians, people tend to view it as background music rather that a performance, like a wedding band at a reception.. Still Ms Dennerlien is a pro indeed and those who do choose to listen to her (and not talk over her that is) will be in for a real treat.
Ok - you are kidding, right? Jon Lord got a lousy technique, repeats his 5 or 6 standard solo-phrases since the 70s and obviously refused to pactice since then. Dennerlein plays in a different dimension just as Joey di Francesco or Keith Emerson, just to mention two of some others.
@anonymusum now way, keith is a barbarus player, and joey dosn't belong at this row. But lets not discus personal taste. I prefer John for his clasical scills.
What classical skills? Whenever I hear him trying to play classical phrases I have to laugh. But in fact this is a real serious problem as he mainly works on the crossover field now. When he plays with orchestras his so called crossover program the musicians feel their prejudices against rock musicians satisfied. So whenever someone tries to make a crossover project with them they think he must be as limited as Jon Lord. This is my experience as a prof. classical musician.
@anonymusum classical snob, eat shit! every purely classical trained "musician" that trying to improvise is fun to watch and laugh. only those who are on jazz and/or rock side can jam well!
Fantastic musician! An aside— US citizens, have a look at that white extension cord on the right! Substantial! Don't know why we Americans aren't all electrocuted by our flimsy wires and plugs!
Just some trivia info: Barb is playing the Hammond B3 Ultima here.. Barb prolly DID learn some things from Rhoda, however, she is a master of the B3 in her own right...
It is not only Rhoda's picture behind Barb....altho' not seen here, Rhoda is actually there----to Barb's right....sitting at an identical B3 Ultima (and if you watch Barb...especially at the end...shesmiles respectfully in Rhoda's direction consistently throughout)
Everyone learns something from somebody sometime. I'm sure any God gifted talent such as Barbara or Rhoda, or any professional jazz organist for that matter, appreciates each individual's style and professional abilities. I know that I enjoy their music.very much and don't really care who taught them. I concentrate on the delivery of their musical talents and the beauty of it all. Jazz and Blues on!!
why do you always want too some white person king or queen of something. she's good, you obviously Rhoda scott or Japanese organist, if you look at this video that's rhoda photo in the background.Barbara learned from Rhoda.
That was truly kick ass!

I met Barbara six or seven years ago. She's also a real grounded person. No alueres at all. Just a scilleld musician, making no affaires about it.

@expertman60 I believe that's a chopped B3, wired to run on the European power system.
