  • I planned to hear Ole Johnny in 1983 in concert in Pittman, NJ. I even had the money for the ducket--but he got sent to rehab, and that was that. At least we've got youtube and CD's until we fans get up yonder and hear him sing up there. The angels needed a bass voice.

  • So You Tube has removed. Distress and sadness.

  • @saffernellie so You Tube has removed this great song. What a pity. Shel was such a talent in all his various works.

    Saffy

  • @saffernellie this song is still working on my end.

  • great song & a great video, thanks for posting

  • shel was a genious, crazy as a loon, a rare gem. sadly he passed away at home in key west around 1998.

  • i've never heard Shel Silverstein sing anything. I know that he wrote a lot of hits.

I heard this in Australia years ago, sung by a fellow named John Laws, who has always been a Johnny Cash fan, just like myself and my wife.

  • OMG....thank you so freaking much....I met Shel one time in LA when I was 12 at a Hook show. He was an amazing man with a real twisted, but funny sense of humor.

When I tell my kids the guy that wrote the poetry book they read in grade school wrote "Boy named Sue" for JC, I had to prove it to them. Now both of my kids, 15 and 18 love Hook and JC.

  • I love singing along to this in the car on the way to work. It's freeing to build up to Mr. S's oh-so-coo-coo manic finale! All together now; Bow-bow-bagga-bagga-bow!!!

  • A baby with a teething ring!, that's a long way to go to hear anyone sing.

  • Lol! I love Youtube.

I have the album but it's nice to have the photos to go with the song.

    Thanks.

  • I never knew he did music, i just knew him frm the childrens books

  • Well, there is about 10 very good originally Shel Silverstein LP/Albums if not even more.

Many of them can be found on CD`s now a days.

Shel Silverstein wrote many of Dr.Hook`s songs in the early 70thies.

Shel is also well known for his penned songs to Bobby Bare, Bob Gibson and more.

Shel was a big fan of Johnny Cash, and he wrote him one of Cash biggest hits ever " A Boy named Sue" .
