As for execution Shannon in 91-92 was the wobble queen on beam. She never got through an optional beam routine without a couple obvious balance breaks. Kim who often got through routines with no breaks and had more amplitude on her moves had better execution. Kims form and choreography on beam was just fine as well. It is not like Shannons was the best either, she was no Yang Bo or Boginskaya in that regard at that point, that is for sure.
By the way Kim did win the 92 World title on beam, and her top scores at the World and Olympics in 91 and 92 on beam were all higher than Shannon's so it would be more than justified if one said Kim was better on beam (which I didnt say outright anyway). Shannon had more content but never hit a totally clean beam routine once at either the 91 Worlds or 92 Olympics, except compulsories. Shannon was lucky that both Gutsu and Zmeskal were out of beam finals at the Games (and that Yang Bo fell).
Such a shame she wasn't a part of the 96 team that won gold. She certainly deserved it. As for the commenter below who talks up Miller and disses Kim, please don't be so petty. Kim Zmeskal was a phenomenal gymnast--one of the best in the world. And she's got the trophies to prove it.
@luv4cookie1 Fail. The only time Shannon ever did the yurchenko full better than Kim was in Barcelona. Every other times in their careers together Kim did it better, usually much better. Shannon did not have more difficulty on floor Kim did a pike full in, 3 whips into a double back, and in 92 was doing a double layout and a pike full in as her last pass sometimes. Kim's beam was rock solid in 91 and 92. Only on bars was Shannon signifcantly better but Shannon's bars is overrated too.
@russianskatingfan If you think Kim's 91 or 92 beam routines were harder and/or better than Shannon's, your limited knowledge is showing. Kim was definitely the better vaulter and tumbler, but at the 1991 Worlds and 1992 Olympics specifically, Shannon had the superior--and more challenging--floor routines. It's unfortunate Kim couldn't compete her Olympic Trials floor routine in Barcelona--that was her best chance for a medal.
@dbhmr Learn to read properly fool. I never said Kims beam was harder than Shannons. I only said her beam was rock solid. Shannon did not have more challenging floor routines, especialy at the 92 Games. Kim opened with a pike full in in combination and ended with a regular pike full in.
You are the same idiot who thinks Atler deserved her scores at the American Cup and Nationals from 97-99 yet thinks Dawes is overscored so the one with limited (or no) knowledge on the sport is you.
@russianskatingfan Glad to see you still hang on to years-old YouTube comments. Anyway, I can read, and you wrote: "Only on bars was Shannon significantly better," implying that she was not significantly better on beam, which she was--form, difficulty, execution, choreography. And that floor routine you just described from Kim was during the event finals only. As for Atler, that's not really what I've said, but reading comprehension is hard. Best of luck to you.
@dbhmr She was NOT significantly better on beam, that is a ridiculous thing to say based on actual facts. Their scores on optional beam in World and Olympic competition in 91 and 92:
Kim- 9.912, 9.962, 9.9, 9.925, 9.912, 9.800 (the last her only botched optional routine)
The facts spell out you are wrong regardless of your biased opinions. In fact Kim regularly outscored Shannon on optional beam at the World level then.
@russianskatingfan You're going to sit there and tell me Kim wasn't overscored, especially at the 1991 Worlds? A 9.962 with a bobble and a hop on the landing? I know you love to point out every instance Shannon was overscored, but seem to have a hard time doing so when it comes to Kim. And if the only thing you look for to determine if a gymnast is better are scores given by other people, then you seem to lack any sort of opinion or knowledge of your own.
@dbhmr Many thought Shannon was overscored in the 92 Olympic AA on beam, especialy compared to Gutsu, as well. Those are the only scores of the ones I listed questioned, so even. Scores are the most objective measure since we could argue all day about who deserved what score, and since you are so excessively biased to your favorites such as Miller and your beloved clown Vanessa Atfailure. Either way if Miller was "significantly better" on beam she wouldnt be consistently scored lower.
@russianskatingfan For an entirely different example, I think Mo Huilan was a much better gymnast on beam than Lavinia Milosovici. But if we lined up their scores, I'm sure Milo would come out higher because she was more consistent. I don't see how you can determine ability by scores alone.
@dbhmr you are quite wrong here. The majority of Mos scores were higher and often much higher than Milos on beam in 95-96. Since the falls come in the minority you can still comfortably say Mo was much better on beam based on the majority of higher scores and her peak scores such as two 9.9s at the 95 Worlds. In 94 Mo was not better on beam than Milo yet.
This is not the case with Miller and Kim. Kims higher scores and overall scores at the World level were regularly higher.
@TikiBoy382 She took bronze, Bontas and Chusovitina took a tie for gold. If you haven't seen their routines already I would recommend you watch them they are quite incredible!
I agree. But part of it is this I believe is prior to the newer age rules. The younger gymnasts can usually do more impressive looking moves (maybe because they are smaller?). The age restrictions leaves me conflicted because the reason for them does not seam to solve any of the problems they were trying to avoid.
Easy to find her floor-ex to the tune of "Rock Around the Clock", but so rare to see this one (the one I first remember her by) at all. Thank you so much for posting it!!

@vee80seven Well, when you're being forced by increasing competition to put 4 1/2 passes in your routine, there's not much room for anything else.

I love this girl. She was very charismatic. That was actually fun to watch. The crowd went nuts!

this was back in the days when gymnasts actually competed floor routines with the total package. now it's just tumbling with background music.
