I was wondering this as well. Having a corporate sponsor would certainly help in initial costs and potential service issues down the road. But, I couldn't imagine Ewan and Charley not being able to afford a couple of ~14K adventure bikes. I understand they will have other expenses along the way, but still.

This would basically be free advertising for KTM. Their bikes are used in some pretty serious racing, so it's not like they aren't up for the job.

you need to make sure you'll have all the equipment you need when you need it, and all the right papers to get through the borders, you need enough food you don't starve, and you need to make sure you always have enough money.

You must be a bloody idiot to think they could just go, if anything it makes the trip much more fun and will put their mind at rest to know that everything has been properly planned. Have you ever been on a road trip? Planning a route and what you want to do and see is a large part of the excitement of the whole thing. Maybe you don't realise how enormous Siberia is.

KTMs would have been the perfect bikes for their trip but too bad they messed up big time. Charlie still laughs when he sees a KTM breakdown many years after this incident - watch his Sydney to Tokyo By Any Means trip and you will realize why he's laughing.

KTM can talk the talk 'Best offroad bikes in the world' but when it came to it, they didn't even dare to try and walk the walk. BMW make amazing bikes, they weren't even fazed by the idea of riding the bikes all around the world, on roads that are in worse condition that most MX tracks. I know someone who complained to the BMW dealer that the inbike tool kits were poor, the guy laughed and said 'This is precision engineering, what are you going to do with a wrench and a couple of screwdrivers'.

And, a little side note: why do Russian authorities (especially small bureaucrats) always have to make everything unnecessarily complicated - drives me fucking crazy... and I am Russian myself, haha.
