@TheSharllot It was in training. There were no video cameras there. There is no video. Unless you saw some super-secret footage that no one else in the world knows about.
Why would someone want to do a sport that so many people are paralyzed from, injured from or died from? It is so sad. I used to be in gymnastics for 7 years until It took too much of a toll on my body physically. i had done so much damage:
- hyperextended knees on vault landing that still give my swelling and pain to this day (6 years later!)
- back stiffness/ pain in lower back from overworking i guess
- i sprained my ankles 3 times so now they are swollen alot and hurt when i run!
December 22, 2010. You left us on a day like today four years ago. Life deprived us of an angel that walked the earth and showed us how acrobatics are performed in heavens. In this cruel world of today, where pointing the finger and blaming others is the norm, your courage, humbleness and stoicism will forever guide us through the path that leads to becoming better human beings. Your legacy and love for the sport will never be forgotten. May you rest in peace always, Beautiful Queen!
know that she got paralyzed! But people dont die just because they got paralyzed. It said "complications caused her death" what were the "complications"?
@PokemonTCG88 could be ANYTHING from include urinary and fecal incontinence that sometimes requires ostomy, respiratory infections (pneumonia, atelectasis), coronary heart disease, autonomic dysreflexia, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, kidney and liver insufficiency, gallstones, constipation, pressure sores (decubitus ulcers), and osteoporosis.
@luv2livex4 she didn't get enough height practicing a thomas salto and she landed on her chin, paralyzing her from the neck down. this was around 1980. she died in 2006 from complications from being a quadriplegic
i remember reading somewhere that she said she would never do a thomas salto without getting injured, but her coach told her that she wasn't the type of person who gets injured. i wish we would be able to sue the coach for child endangerment, but she was 20... so sad :(
all becouse of the coach. BECOUSE OF THE DAMN COACH!!! he only thought about getting a good title, not of her capabilities! SELFISH BRAT!!! if not him, shed be alive. She died very yong! her life was still ahead! So tragic to have a dream, and not be able to fulfill it. Pest In Peace! We will never forget you! You inspire me in many ways! You are the best!
what is the tittle of the song yelena is great i wish that she didnt die so if i get a chance to join the gymnastics i would request her to be my coach if thats allowed rest in peace Yelena Mukhina WE WILL ALL MISS YOU!!! u are a great person. BTW whats the tittle of the song. And dont ever delete this song its wonderful=)
The saddest thing is that if she hadn't been pushed over the top by her coach, she would have performed greatly and would be alive today. When she snapped her spine, her first thought was "thank god I'm not going to the olympics." It's so damn sad. R.I.P. Yelena, one of the greatest gymnasts that without performing at the olympics, has touched the hearts of us all.
Really I don't think her coach is to blame though, yes he pushed her too far but her coach was a very nice man and she had a very good relationship with her coach. He was very distraught about the injury.
@idefyustars whats even sadder is that she predicted what would happen to her. she kept trying to convince her coach not to make her do the thomas salto because she realized how dangerous it was for women (to get the height required. female gymnasts are short). she kept getting injured doing it and she told her coach that one day she was going to break her neck. and thats exactly what happened. and then the USSR has the NERVE to blame her for her injury
I remember meeting Elena in Baltimore during the Russian tour of the U.S. She was so tiny and sweet. Very few gymnast perform with their soul. Sad so that gymnastics has gotten from real artistic gymnastics. Thank you for bringing your soul to the sport, Elena! Rest in Peace, sweet one!
The woman revolutionised gymnastics as to how we know it 30 years later.. What a legacy and what a legend. Her story always stuck iin my mind when I first started gymnastics in the late 70s and I was shocked and horrified and sad. But you always know - in reality most couch potatoes don't break their necks, its more likely the most physical which has to be the hardest thing to live with.
Both her person and gymnastics are beautiful beyond words. I think, had it not for the nagging injury and the untimely tragedy, she should have developed into the greatest female gymnast of all times (sorry, Nadia). But, like we chinese always say: 紅顏薄命,天妒英才, sigh......
@XxCadence123xX I'm not sure I understand, lol. There's a video called You in Gymnastics that has tons of footage of the Soviets training. It's in Russian. That's where the training footage in this montage came from, but they weren't there when Yelena had her accident.
I love her she is my isparation to become a gymnast and I want to be just like her. Well not exatly like her I don't really want to die because of a gymnastics accident. I love her =D
just new paralyzed lab rats have been showing signs of improvment & r able to walk after being treated with injections of healthy growth cells. sci is ready now try it on humans.
Poor little angel! She ended her career in a terrible way...so young, so full of hope and dreams...half of her life paralyzed after all the things she did at gymnastics! May she rest in peace....
What a beautiful montage... made me cry :( RIP Yelena Mukhina. It's a shame gymnastics these days just doesn't have the same grace and elegance that it did back in the days of Yelena Mukhina.
2:28 just gives me the chills, SOOOOOOOOO INCREDABLY SAD!!!! Everytime I see a full twisting double back (full in) or a double back off the beam I think of Mukhina. SOOOOOO SOOOOOOOO SOOOOOOOOO SAD!!! And to top it all off, it's a SIN that the roll-out tumbling pass that she paralized herself on, was STILL allowed for a few years following, it should have been banned INSTANTLY upon her accident to make a point that it is just too dangerous. Not to mention her version with an extra twist. :( !!!
Her coach pushed her, she said she failed herself because she wouldn't say no. That's just so sad. As a coach I hope I always show some kind of compassion and have the ability to see when someone has taken on too much and needs a break.
This is the saddest and most devastating story of aqll time in our sport! What a talent Yelena was! We will always appreciate her grace, beauty, artistry, and difficulty. I become so emotional when I watch these clips! She will certainly be missed ... but NEVER forgotten!!!
Yelena, you are not forgotten. And your killers are not forgiven. The angels are on your side. Maybe not the angels you would have wanted to hang with, but angels regardless. You should still be with us, babe. I won't forgive those who pushed you out of life. You should be with us.
Im sure she got injured in training doing a thomas salto on floor(back layout 1 1/34 rollout). She fell and broke her neck. That move is illegal now. Such a sad story ;-(
Apparently female do not have the arm strength to rescue the move if its underotated or something like that....ie too dangerous. Men can still do it though
do a search for Elena Shushunova FX. the seoul free will probably be the first video. it's the pass she throws at 1:16. ugly if you ask me. not worth mukhina dying over.
