@aa666 Quite so. I visited Sleddale Hall during late Winter this year to find the place in quite good condition, all things considered. The guy who now owns it, Tim, was there, and he let us look inside. He's renovating the place and told us that, as a fan, he's doing it up in the style of the film, and will rent it out to customers as a holiday home.
Amazing tribute.. this film had such an impact on my life as Im sure it did with others..
quite to sad to see the house, which was almost a character itself in such a state, but nice to see that it has been held in such regards.. a living testiment to the power of admiration... long may it stand, or be restored..
was in fact bought by tim ellis, a restoration architect from canterbury my home town. i think he paid something in the region of 140k for it as a pub owner in the village failed to stump up the cash i believe and it went to the second bidder. i was there last weekend and its boarded up and padlocked now as tim is there every three weeks renovating. we missed him as he didnt make it that weekend, i was told by the farmer down the road. i was sad i couldnt go inside but thems the breaks
Could be restored with care. But I wouldnt want the bill. And do you restore to look like it was in the film (partially run-down anyway) or do it up and take all the character away?
Around a quarter of a million quid this place was bought for, by some 'developer' a few months back. Fucking hellski.
Lets hope they renovate it, and transform it into a haven for Withail fans selling breaks at reasonable prices, and not turn it into a toad hall for fat rich pricks, complete with a fucking golf course.
Hopefully he'll do a better job than that wanker Seb Hindley would have done. He has a rep in Cumbia for raising everyones hopes then walking away when said project doesnt work out leaving everyone out of pocket.
When we were there, the upstairs was in such a state of decay that I would suggest any such hallucinogenics as being somewhat unwise. But hey, That's politics, man.
i feel this strange tug at my heart at the thought of people preserving the cottage and even writing qoutes on the walls of the building :D (obcessive little fan is happy) it must have been genius to see it. could you get inside?
According to The Guardian, "The Cumbrian farmhouse where Withnail and his hapless sidekick famously went on holiday "by mistake" sold at auction for £265,000 yesterday."
Really enjoyed this. Especially the audio clips to go with the shots of the graffitti. The soliloquy always leaves me feeling 'wrung out' everytime I watch Withnail.
group of student from glasogw planning going a pilgrimage there before it gets sold off, just a pity its the winter , just wanted to find out how easy it is to get into any1 been there fairly recent?
The farmhouse is clearly visible from the Wet Sleddale car park near Shap, and the walk was pretty straight forward although a bit boggy underfoot in places, and that was in the summer. All I can recommend is good waterproof footwear, and good luck.
absolute shame it's been aloud to go in to such disrepair... Is it not for sale? Does the national trust/heritage own it and not care? Some one should campaign to get it fixed up!!
How did you get inside? Did you have to break in? I'm planning a trip soon and would like to sit down and enjoy my holiday. Can you drive right up to the cottage or will I have to go on holiday by mistake?
It's a fair way from the Wet Sleddale car park (waterproof footware advisable), over a few fences, across the river and up a steep hill and you're there. There were a couple of ways to get in, one by crawling through a missing panel in the front door, or (probably more dangerous) round the back and down through the roof. The property was in a sorry state when we visited, and so extreme caution is required once inside, especially upstairs.

The soliloquy from Shakespeare's Hamlet at the end of the film (and this video) is so apt. It's ironic that being a struggling actor, and pretending that he was actually going to play the Dane to Monty earlier in the film, Withnail finally becomes Hamlet in those last poignant moments when he saw his friend leave his world. Movies like this, that have things working on so many different levels, are extremely rare. Withnail and I is a masterpiece that gives new pleasures with repeated viewing.
withnail is still the best film ive seen ,ive lost count how many times over the years ive seen it and this is a brilliant tribute so thanks lads and well done
I met this charming British girl a few years ago. I asked her which part of England she was from. She said "The Lake District". Of course I asked "Penrith?"
Indeed it is where she is from. She was surprised anyone knew where that was. I was even more surprised she had not heard of this film.
Just down the hill below Sleddale Hall is a river, and if you follow the river a few hundred yards in the opposite direction to the resevoir, you'll find the 'shooting bridge'.
We managed to remain accident free, but found the 'bathroom' requires extreme caution. The floor slopes away, and the floorboards feel like walking on stale biscuits.
It's well worth the visit. On the trek from Wet Sleddale Reservoir, we met a guy coming the other way who enquired as to whether we'd "come on holiday by mistake". With the 'shooting' bridge only a stones throw from Sleddale Hall, and the Bampton phone box and Hawswater only a few miles away, it made for a riotous day out.
Oh, I just made the hike a couple weeks ago on my last day in England. Isn't it amazing when you first get up there? (I don't recommend going in the winter, though ... we had a horrible time getting there.)

A wonderful video, although I must point out that they didn't use the upstairs of the house in the actual film.

Sleddale Hall is close to Shap, just off the M6 in Cumbria, and Bampton and Haweswater are a short drive away. (A map comes in useful though)
