Would they all stop talking and clapping whenever he cuts something?! They all seem to think he's just a common entertainer and the cuts are his greatest 'trick' while ignoring his demonstration of form and seemingly bottomless courtesy when he bows to them knowing full well he won't receive a single nod in response.
I could never do demonstrations, I didn't have the patience (or nerve). Yoshiharu sensei really is something, something everyone could be, but few ever are.
I have no comment on the sword practitioners form in this vid, but I do wonder why he wiped of the blade at the end when he would have already got moisture into the saya from numerous noto's performed prior to this! also as a practitioner of Toyama-ryu myself through Nakamura sensei's line I have never seen the reverse noto used in Toyama-ryu! this demo looks like a mixture of Iaido with some Toyama-ryu technique, however this is just my opinion, an no disrespect is intended...
nakamura created this school to train assault troops fighting against Chinese communist guerillas in Northern China. I'm sure this was very effective against the poorly equipped and trained Chinese, but against Americans, these samurai were just massacred with their banzai chargees.
@solunasunrise Fool. Could an insult be this simple yes I believe so. Obviousely you do not practice or respect this art. If so you would be entertained by such a skillfull display.
Sweet...good old style...can´t beat it. The good thing of old fashion iaido (or any other martial art) is that it keeps things simple...pure concentration is everything you need in life. You see, this sensei won´t neglect a single move...and that my dear 666Namyryu13 beat flashy styles everytime.
SilentGhost29: you are right. i've watched countless demos on video and in person. I've never really felt the zanshin and wabisabi that i feel when i watch him do his thing. it's only him and the sword and maybe i should say it's only thesword/him. they are one.

You all stupid and ignorant! If you want to learn the right way, try Nami-Ryu. James Williams is the man when it comes to any type of weapons trainng. Damn, you are wasting your frigin time with this crap!
I have the impression if you ARE one of Williams Senseis students and he reads tyour post that you wont be for long. Im also sure that using 666 as a precursor to the Nami Ryu name does neither the Ryu nor the sensei any service or honor.
From the sounds of your post your attitude would be better served studying (and commenting) on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and leaving the discussions about what constitutes good battou and tameshigiri to the adults.
@666NamiRyu13 So far everyone I've met in life and online that mentions good things about James, is being disrespectfull to the true arts. If this is how he teaches you to act, then you and he has failed to learn anything the sword has to offer. You should show respect, It's fools like you that I cannot blame the japanese for thinking all americans are fools. I have a great deal of respect for this man. He shows more skill and tradition than anything I've heard or seen from James.
I am an Iaidoka of some 25 years, and appreciate skill in tamaeshi giri. Its wonderful to see REAL tameshi,no Ego,no excessive strength nor nervous speed, as so many Western Kenshi who demonstrate the art have yet to understand and master.
yeah, absolutely agree! the organizers should explain this. Likewise, although I love slowmotion of this kind of stuff, it DOES block the flow of this otherwise fabulous video.
If swords are instruments of death, then why are we still using them? Someone once told me that the katana is obsolete (and it's pretty obvious too, seeing that guns have been the weapon of choice for a few centuries now.) Why practice something so obsolete? Do you see random people with swords on their belts ready to defend themselves with it anymore? No, not really.... All I could see useful out of this is maybe teaching values like patience, dedication, etc. etc.
I think its pretty obvious nobody learns swordplay believing it will be of practical use in self defense or in an attack against an enemy. Its done because its basically a martial art. Like you said, its to teach values and to train your body and mind.

Brilliant demo, but I didn't care for slow motion parts. I mean, does it have to go slomo each and every time he cuts something??
kogai 3 months ago
Look at the expression of his face: it is the same during the whole practice. It is pure concentration, and he is REALLY good

playing with real swords is a bad idea unless you really know what you are doing. They are instruments of death and should be treated as such.
