Shooting is pretty difficult in BF2. I mean not difficult, all you need to do is be patient, but theres really something wrong with the hitboxes if a guy is on vehicle.

My guess is that somewhere in the code the hit detection occurs before the collision box of the player is updated and the player drawn. This causes the box to lag one frame behind.
i think bf2 hitboxes are just so realistic though. i think you just gotta know where to aim and how to shoot. it's not that simple, you've gotta learn it. bf2 is a realistic game since it's foundation back in 1942. just aim according to your movements, to the enemies' movements. c'mon, we're talking about the game that lets a missile go through a chopper without hitting it if it has the space it needs, aren't we?
I don't really care anymore but I have to point out this is a bad argument. I'm not disputing the complexity of the hitboxes, but rather the actual placement-- relation of visible model vs. actual hitbox. Sure, the chopper hitboxes have a hole in the middle so a missile can fly through, but that doesn't mean it's aligned correctly to the physical model. Plenty of videos of TV missiles zooming straight through choppers (through the models of the pilots and everything) with no collision.

BF2 still king of shooters but hitboxes simply suck. Patch 1.5 that supposed to fix things made everyhting worse on my case.. I tried against bots a few days ago and couldn´t hit a standing bot with ak from few meters away. It looked like hit detection was about 50% or even less when shooting from still stance to still target. I play bfbc2 nowadays but it seems dice managed to copy quite a few bugs from bf2 to bfbc2. Dont know if to trust Dice enough to get BF3.
nice video, i never really took the time to figure it out on my own i just winged it until i was accurate.
there is a video for CS that proves the same point. its common practice for games to use ghosted hit box models to adjust for accuracy. when you can actually see the hit box model swinging around its actually quite funny though in certain situations those impossible head shots become all the more understandable since the model is basically skull fornicating you at close range.
Only the worst examples of games don't correct for perspective to the target (IE when the target is running away) combat arms is an example of magic kills when spraying randomly. I hate BF2s hit correction because actually striking the rendered model is a false positive that should at least count for winged hit but its entirely reported on the client side, sadly. If you hit a target they should at least take some damage or instead of dust they should cower and lose accuracy.

funny thing is. in mw1 and mw2 i play with 100 ping but i hit perfectly no hit box no nothing.a player with 50 ping doesnt have any advantage over me.but bf2 if u have more then 30 ping u cant play

Hit detection is only one of the major bugs in buggyfield 2.
It takes a combination of bugs to totally ruin battlefield 2.

The only thing wrong with BF2 is the bullet drop/physics whatever. You can't hit anything from the hip unless you are really close due to the spread. Aside from that, no one can look at another person with a straight face and say that MW2 has a better MP than BF2. I could somewhat agree if you were talking about COD4 but MW2, no just simply no.
Nevertheless I find bf2 far more laggy than when I used to play on dial up at over 300ping.
I can play a game on Onlive which streams a entire game over the internet more reliably than bf2 plays on my computer when I am connected to a bf2 online game.
The netcoding is horrible in bf2.

This really did happen and it kinda pisses you off with such horrible net coding.
while it's true that shooting at the direct middle will sometimes land hits, sometimes it won't. To aim at the "center" of the player hitbox, you need to aim at their left side if they are moving right.
For example if they are moving right, shooting their exact center (as you say) with a pump shotgun will only make about half of the bullets connect --- That is, the pellets hitting the left half WILL connect, and the pellets hitting the right half WONT connect.
@release2 I got tons of problems facing guys head on. Not moving left or right, just standing still and this crap happens, puffs of smoke everywhere. It's a retarded system and has gotten me close to uninstalling this bs.

bullshit it hasnt been fixed at all. Makes no sense to play a game where you have to aim behind an enemy to hit them. Even if the target is stationary you cant hit them from ten feet away firing 3 round bursts with a fucking SAW. snipers register on stationary targets but nothing else unless you use an aimbot like most ppl who play that game do.
Bullet travel time means you have to aim ahead of the target. If bullet travel time is the ONLY factor, there is no possible way that feature would cause you to have to aim behind a target

At close ranges, you still have to aim slightly behind targets. I just played yesterday. At far ranges though, as the distance increases, bullet travel time will have more precedence than the bad netcode and you will have to aim a bit ahead

and you also think about it: if it was SO easy to fix it, it would be fixed after the very first patch. The fact that it took them a countless number of patches when people still had/have problems with the hitbox, makes it more likely that its a valid problem now, still.

Okay, this will probably help me out. I wish they would fix that damn hit box! There would be probably 6 times the current amount of players if they fixed the aiming problem. I'm so sick of nade spammers. It's seriously all you can rely on in this game. It makes me sad because then it takes away from the reality that BF2 is trying to give.
this is caused by latency init.. each person it will be different. maybe not by much but if 1 person has slighty faster/slower net they would be a little of to what u see on screen.
In older games with no net hit detection, you had to aim ahead of targets to hit players. The higher your ping, the farther ahead you had to aim.
You are correct that it is caused by latency, but that is a given fact, because latency is a primary factor in the hit detection formula. The point of coding hit detection is to make the player Not have to compensate for their own latency, and instead aim directly at targets, as if it's a single player game.
I have also noticed no difference with the 1.50 patch this game is still just as frustrating for me. out of all the shooters i've played this one by far has the crappiest hit detection
That's what they claim, however I've noticed NO difference. The hit detection is as bad as it has always been. This is still most evident when sniping. It's like it's not even about having good aim, it's just about having good luck.
the hitbox isnt fucked up.....u just have to adjust it to your ping. the standard settings of bf2 hitbox works with 100ms ping. Im sure u hadnt a ping of 100 when u made the movie right? your ping was around 30-50 right ? u just need to change some numbers in the usersettings.con file. When u fixed it onto ur normal ping that u have on ur fav. servers u will hit exactly where u aimed at......just google bf2 adjust hitbox....
Whats really funny, is if you jump and go prone while aiming and firing at an enemy whom is standing still or crouching while aiming and firing, you will 99% of the time always get the kill (both players with a very good ping). You would think the guy standing still or crouching would be more accurate, than the person jumping and going prone causing the gun to fly around all over the place. Even if the motionless person is unloading into the other players head xD!
That's another one of my problems with the design lol - very flawed. The advantage of the person diving all crazy should be that he is diving all crazy and is hard to hit while doing that, but he should not also be rewarded with instant high accuracy, it should be the other way around!

Other values are GSExterpolationTime and GSDefaultLatencyCompensation (I think that's how they were spelled)
It's also been said that you put your GSDefaultLatencyCompensation to equal you ping, where .1 = 100 ping, so .06 = 60 ping (I think that's how it worked, doublecheck)
I tried all this and it never made a difference for me, but some people say it helps (then again, there is a chance it's a placebo effect).

I personally think Bf2 is an awsome game, it just comes with a bunch of bullshit. Hackers, cheaters, crashes, bugs, glitches, stuff that would never happen in real life, whiners, immature kids....and so on, and so on.

Like the fact that there is the possibility of a map being hosted on it's max size (designed for 64 players) with only 7 people in the server. This makes aircrafts too strong since there's not enough people to man AA, makes the map too big, and will result in everyone being in armor or an aircraft. Some maps aren't balanced anyways but they are the most balanced when the right amount of players (or more) is on its own mapsize.
I think lag will always be a problem of intenet gaming. It is impossible for all computers across the globe to be linked with no delay. In this case, the game would have to predict the actions of the players to compensate for the minor delays in-game. Thus, internet gaming will always be flawed.
Well .. of course lag will always exist, but there are games that have proper "anti-lag" coded. Which basically means; hitting an enemy on your screen counts as a server-side hit. Return to Castle Wolfenstein MP and Enemy Territory have great hit detection.
The problem with this however is if, ex. Joe has a high ping, and he can shoot Steve who JUST strafed behind a solid wall, and still hit him. But on the Steve's screen, he got shot "through the wall", because he was already behind cover.
Therefore what could be done is simply have people above a certain ping automatically kicked (which is what most games do, this is the easy way), or have the server attempt to take into account if the player getting shot was behind cover, taking into account the shooter's ping. So... if someone with 100 ping or so shoots someone that JUST ducked behind cover.. sure, make the shot count. But if someone with 250 ping makes the same shot, then that shot shouldn't register.
edit: actually, it wouldn't really be taking into account if the player getting shot is "behind cover", but it could re-trace the shot and use that player's updated position... if it passes through a solid object... then decide what to do from there -- (if shooter's ping is low, give the shot, if it's too high, don't count the shot)
I play this friggen game from the first moment it was out . Not 1 clan can proper defend 1 flag .I was in 1 team who could do that proper.

and yes the clan i am in [dBc] dirty Bastards clan has been a clan since bf1942 and is probably one of the longest running clans in all of battlefield, as i was saying our clan plays very strategically and servers that we are in we do defend flags, and take flags, its all about how the game is moving

So i got this problem with hit detection. In LA96A1 sniper and m24 it doesn't show the hits if i kill someone, no x won't appear. So could u guys help me?
That's really weird. That may be a packet loss problem? I know on some servers if my ping is above like, 120, -sometimes- I will shoot someone, and get no X, but then someone else kills them and it says I got a "kill damage assist", meaning yes, I did hit them.
Although, hmm. With the sniper rifle, when you shoot, instead of just clicking left-click to fire, you can click-and-hold left click to fire if you want, and it's easier to see if an X appears that way.
Yeah.. I've actually noticed this when I came back to the game. I'd find cover with the sniper kit and I'd attempt to pick off moving targets and a lot of time I noticed that the puff would pop out but he sustained no damage from the shot..
there shouldn't be anything factored in, that'd be like saying, "OK joe, face me, now let's both strafe to the right, ok good, now, I'm shooting the fuck out of your arm!" bangbangbang "OH MY GOD, MY ARM!!!" "No, Joe, listen, it's OK, since we were both moving, the shots didn't count" then joe bleeds to death.

Yeah the tank shells move slowly through the air unlike bullets, thus making you have to aim ahead. But ever shot a car in BF2 with a tank, BOOM, right on the dashboard, and the hit didn't count? It's the same thing - the projectile needed to hit a tiny bit -behind- the car. Which isn't right!
Amazing. For most of the video it is hard to tell when you hit and when you miss, but @ 3:50 and one it's abundantly clear that this is why I have been missing when I thought I was getting hits... and now that I think of it why a few (very few) others missed me (my health was still 100% after a 1 on 1 encounter).
the goal, kinda, was to explain why it "misses" sometimes at certain ranges. did you see the sniper shot at uh... i dunno somewhere in the middle of the video. I had text saying like "Now I'm shooting at the target's neck" or something.. looking closer, I actually hit her right in the head - dust puff - head shakes - no kill, while aiming right at the target. The point was aiming right at the target doesn't always work because the hitboxes don't match up with the target!

Battlefield 2 at 100 ping is comparable to 500 ping on a good game.
Bf2 is one of the most laggy and buggy games I have played on PC.
I love getting a there is a problem with your connection while I am talking perfectly fine on vent.
There is no problem with my connection there is a problem with this fucking game.
"MW2 is more of a "whoever aims first kills first" game."
Over a game that is who ever is lucky enough for random deviation to have their shots hit and register.

The only thing wrong with BF2 is the bullet drop/physics whatever. You can't hit anything from the hip unless you are really close due to the spread. Aside from that, no one can look at another person with a straight face and say that MW2 has a better MP than BF2. I could somewhat agree if you were talking about COD4 but MW2, no just simply no.

Nevertheless I find bf2 far more laggy than when I used to play on dial up at over 300ping.
I can play a game on Onlive which streams a entire game over the internet more reliably than bf2 plays on my computer when I am connected to a bf2 online game.
The netcoding is horrible in bf2.

I find mw2 slightly better in multiplayer but not much imo.
BF2 was more detailed and required more team work ,but what kills it to me is aiming at someone 20 feet away on single fire and a quarter of shots not registering plus shots missing from the stupid deviation.
The bugs alone are horrendous in bf2. Sound bug,squad bug,flag bug(can't capture flag),revive bug, refresh favorite list erases it(i mean come on).
It is idiotic to lose health because a teammate sprinted at me.

while it's true that shooting at the direct middle will sometimes land hits, sometimes it won't. To aim at the "center" of the player hitbox, you need to aim at their left side if they are moving right.
For example if they are moving right, shooting their exact center (as you say) with a pump shotgun will only make about half of the bullets connect --- That is, the pellets hitting the left half WILL connect, and the pellets hitting the right half WONT connect.
the point was to illustrate that.

I admit the video sucks now. I had a beep sound whenever the X appeared (which means you DID hit) so it was easier to notice
But in reply to your comment- check 1:50 - I aimed at the enemy and hit him lots (he was going "ow ow ow") but not one hit registered and he never died
the clip starting at 2:16 , is me shooting all bullets behind the enemy and magically killing him xP

bullshit it hasnt been fixed at all. Makes no sense to play a game where you have to aim behind an enemy to hit them. Even if the target is stationary you cant hit them from ten feet away firing 3 round bursts with a fucking SAW. snipers register on stationary targets but nothing else unless you use an aimbot like most ppl who play that game do.

Bullet travel time means you have to aim ahead of the target. If bullet travel time is the ONLY factor, there is no possible way that feature would cause you to have to aim behind a target

At close ranges, you still have to aim slightly behind targets. I just played yesterday. At far ranges though, as the distance increases, bullet travel time will have more precedence than the bad netcode and you will have to aim a bit ahead

and you also think about it: if it was SO easy to fix it, it would be fixed after the very first patch. The fact that it took them a countless number of patches when people still had/have problems with the hitbox, makes it more likely that its a valid problem now, still.

Okay, this will probably help me out. I wish they would fix that damn hit box! There would be probably 6 times the current amount of players if they fixed the aiming problem. I'm so sick of nade spammers. It's seriously all you can rely on in this game. It makes me sad because then it takes away from the reality that BF2 is trying to give.

this is caused by latency init.. each person it will be different. maybe not by much but if 1 person has slighty faster/slower net they would be a little of to what u see on screen.

In older games with no net hit detection, you had to aim ahead of targets to hit players. The higher your ping, the farther ahead you had to aim.
You are correct that it is caused by latency, but that is a given fact, because latency is a primary factor in the hit detection formula. The point of coding hit detection is to make the player Not have to compensate for their own latency, and instead aim directly at targets, as if it's a single player game.

Try it on a LAN server with less than 10 ping.
My gameplay performance goes way down when my ping is above 50. (stuff like unloading weapons into a stationary target from oh...2 tank lengths away)

Can you test it again? In patch 1.5, the hit box detection has been tweaked to be more accurate.

That's what they claim, however I've noticed NO difference. The hit detection is as bad as it has always been. This is still most evident when sniping. It's like it's not even about having good aim, it's just about having good luck.

the hitbox isnt fucked up.....u just have to adjust it to your ping. the standard settings of bf2 hitbox works with 100ms ping. Im sure u hadnt a ping of 100 when u made the movie right? your ping was around 30-50 right ? u just need to change some numbers in the usersettings.con file. When u fixed it onto ur normal ping that u have on ur fav. servers u will hit exactly where u aimed at......just google bf2 adjust hitbox....

Whats really funny, is if you jump and go prone while aiming and firing at an enemy whom is standing still or crouching while aiming and firing, you will 99% of the time always get the kill (both players with a very good ping). You would think the guy standing still or crouching would be more accurate, than the person jumping and going prone causing the gun to fly around all over the place. Even if the motionless person is unloading into the other players head xD!

That's another one of my problems with the design lol - very flawed. The advantage of the person diving all crazy should be that he is diving all crazy and is hard to hit while doing that, but he should not also be rewarded with instant high accuracy, it should be the other way around!

trick is to try to take slow, well placed rounds. Good players learn to only ever aim for the head, which even in bf2 will get you a quick kill.

To fix your hitregistration: By Sargev1.4
1. Go to C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\settings
2. Open usersettings.con in notepad
3. Change the value of the line "SettingsManager.U32Set GSInterpolationTime" to X
4. Play around with x, many say 400 works best, some say around 40.

Thanks for posting this, it's been posted here before but lost somewhere.
Other values are GSExterpolationTime and GSDefaultLatencyCompensation (I think that's how they were spelled)
It's also been said that you put your GSDefaultLatencyCompensation to equal you ping, where .1 = 100 ping, so .06 = 60 ping (I think that's how it worked, doublecheck)
I tried all this and it never made a difference for me, but some people say it helps (then again, there is a chance it's a placebo effect).

interpolation means the delay between the time you fire untill you see the bullet, it only helps visualy (less "dust"), but it doesnt fix the hitbox.

I think its OK but a lot of it was designed with very poor foresight
Like the fact that there is the possibility of a map being hosted on it's max size (designed for 64 players) with only 7 people in the server. This makes aircrafts too strong since there's not enough people to man AA, makes the map too big, and will result in everyone being in armor or an aircraft. Some maps aren't balanced anyways but they are the most balanced when the right amount of players (or more) is on its own mapsize.

I think lag will always be a problem of intenet gaming. It is impossible for all computers across the globe to be linked with no delay. In this case, the game would have to predict the actions of the players to compensate for the minor delays in-game. Thus, internet gaming will always be flawed.

Well .. of course lag will always exist, but there are games that have proper "anti-lag" coded. Which basically means; hitting an enemy on your screen counts as a server-side hit. Return to Castle Wolfenstein MP and Enemy Territory have great hit detection.
The problem with this however is if, ex. Joe has a high ping, and he can shoot Steve who JUST strafed behind a solid wall, and still hit him. But on the Steve's screen, he got shot "through the wall", because he was already behind cover.

Therefore what could be done is simply have people above a certain ping automatically kicked (which is what most games do, this is the easy way), or have the server attempt to take into account if the player getting shot was behind cover, taking into account the shooter's ping. So... if someone with 100 ping or so shoots someone that JUST ducked behind cover.. sure, make the shot count. But if someone with 250 ping makes the same shot, then that shot shouldn't register.

edit: actually, it wouldn't really be taking into account if the player getting shot is "behind cover", but it could re-trace the shot and use that player's updated position... if it passes through a solid object... then decide what to do from there -- (if shooter's ping is low, give the shot, if it's too high, don't count the shot)

So i got this problem with hit detection. In LA96A1 sniper and m24 it doesn't show the hits if i kill someone, no x won't appear. So could u guys help me?

That's really weird. That may be a packet loss problem? I know on some servers if my ping is above like, 120, -sometimes- I will shoot someone, and get no X, but then someone else kills them and it says I got a "kill damage assist", meaning yes, I did hit them.
Although, hmm. With the sniper rifle, when you shoot, instead of just clicking left-click to fire, you can click-and-hold left click to fire if you want, and it's easier to see if an X appears that way.

Yeah.. I've actually noticed this when I came back to the game. I'd find cover with the sniper kit and I'd attempt to pick off moving targets and a lot of time I noticed that the puff would pop out but he sustained no damage from the shot..

i think his question is if the game calculates the momentum of the movement.
it doesn't with infantry, but when moving with a chopper/tank, the game also adds it's momentum.

Hmm, I don't know if I'd say "momentum", but I think I get what you're saying - do you mean just bullet travel time? Yeah the tank shells move slowly through the air unlike bullets, thus making you have to aim ahead. But ever shot a car in BF2 with a tank, BOOM, right on the dashboard, and the hit didn't count? It's the same thing - the projectile needed to hit a tiny bit -behind- the car. Which isn't right!

Amazing. For most of the video it is hard to tell when you hit and when you miss, but @ 3:50 and one it's abundantly clear that this is why I have been missing when I thought I was getting hits... and now that I think of it why a few (very few) others missed me (my health was still 100% after a 1 on 1 encounter).

the goal, kinda, was to explain why it "misses" sometimes at certain ranges. did you see the sniper shot at uh... i dunno somewhere in the middle of the video. I had text saying like "Now I'm shooting at the target's neck" or something.. looking closer, I actually hit her right in the head - dust puff - head shakes - no kill, while aiming right at the target. The point was aiming right at the target doesn't always work because the hitboxes don't match up with the target!
