These men must have had balls of steel charging at tanks you know could destroy you in a single shot without you even realizing what happened. Pretty much every tank besides the Jap tanks were superior to the Sherman.
I read an autobiography of world war 2 Tankers. Interestingly, they did not blame the Germans for their massacre but they blamed their own tank designers and top brass who bought them. Those few Allied Tankers who survived a tank battle in Africa, laughed at the training they were given and knew that the chances were they were unlikely to survive the next battle. RIP.

The Israelis primarily used the M-50/ M-51 (super) Sherman, not the M-4 shown here. The M-50 series was redesigned from top to bottom with numerous improvements including (ironicly) a copy of the German Panther 75mm gun, the M-50 faired well against the "even more obsolete" WW2 vintage Soviet T34/85
The primary reason the Sherman was not upgunned was Gen. leslie McNair commander of army ground forces who blocked every attempt by the arnored board and ordance to upgun the Sherman. He espoused a tank destroyer doctrine. He also blocked deployment of the M-26. Fortunatly he was "accidently" killed by "friendly" fire in Normandy the senior american officer killed "in Combat". The M-36B and a single protoype by Chrysler show the Sherman could have carried the 90mm which was an effective weapon.
@scottduncan44 The Shermans gun was only half the problem, even with a 90mm gun the Shermans armor was totally ineffective.. there was no quick fix for this, adding extra weight caused suspension and drive train problems.
They only made about the same number of M-36s, they had very poor armor compared to the Tiger and were an easy taget.. Sherman crews gave their own tank the name "Tommy Cookers" not something I just made up 5 mins ago. There is absolutely no factual evidence that Whittman was killed by a Sherman or a Firefly, in fact there are more G.I. and British claims than sightings of Elvis, None can be proven...
@spacecadet35 Production of 76.2mm version was limited due to problems with it accuracy and ammunition, low rate of fire and less ammo storage. The Sherman was known for reliablity but modified variants had suspension failure problems due to the extra weight. They were not popular with crews either because it was difficult to escape from, it had no extra armor protection.. the Shermans other shortcoming. Most of these tanks were fitted with less desirable and less reliable Chrysler A57 engine.
@doktorbimmer It reminds of the story from tank school. The chief mechanic points out if the engine doesn't work, but the radio and gun works then what you have is a pill box. The radio sergeant points out if the engine and gun work, but the radio doesn't; one cannot find the enemy. The gunnery sergeant then points out that if the radio and engine works and the gun doesn't, then what you have is a 30 ton portable radio. A Firefly might not be great, but it made holes in the enemy.
@spacecadet35 Great story. The Firefly was only a stop-gap effort, but at least better than the standard M4. Those brits can be very resourceful though, the story of the P-51 Mustang comes to mind, here was this very clean new airframe but with a dog of a motor, the Americans dumped on the British.. that really wanted high perf. fighters not slow ground attack/recon plane. Thankfully some clever lads over there figured out the RR Merlin engine would fit.. the rest is history.
@doktorbimmer Unfortunately a lot of the British tank effort was stop gap measures. They always had to fight with what they had, not what was needed. A bit like the Americans with AT guns. The Sherman was perfectly capable of doing its primary function of shooting up the soft stuff. But due to a lack of heavy tanks the Sherman was often asked to double as a heavy tank and that is when the problems started. I am still impressed that they got a 17 pounder into a Sherman turret.

As an American I can say this.. we have never been good with tanks, especially heavy ones. If it was not for German engineering we would never have the M1 Abrams

The Sherman was one of the worst tanks to take to the battlefield in WW2. The pathetic armour plating, under powered armament & to make things even more nerve wracking for the crew, was the thought of being burnt alive if there was a hit in the rear due to this tank running on petrol. NO ALLIED WW2 tank was a match for a German Tiger or Panther!! The Germans simply had a far superior array of tanks and weapons.
The Soviet T-34 tank had more combat credits and a better kill/death ratio than any Panzer, If the M4 was as bad as you make it sound, they wouldn't have produced so many of them, the reason they did was because it was successful, and cheap to build.
Remember, that Sharman was about 30 tonnes while Panther was around 45 tonnes and Tiger almost 60 tonnes.
Sherman wasn't good but wasn't very bad. It was comparable with Pzkpfw IV (especially versions with 76 mm gun or 17 pounders). It has weak offroad performances (especially compared to T34) but was reliable, easy to produce etc. I will say that M4 was worse then T-34, equal to Pzkpfw IV and better than British Cromwell tank.
@GoldCoastKiwi4209 I don't agree, the soviets had very good tanks as-well. Kv-1 was a monster, very little(exept for the 88 of cource) could harm it in the early years. IS-2 was also a dangerous match for the tiger and panther. In the battle of France the British Matilda II proved superior to the German panzers, as did the French Char B1 and SOMUA S35.

The fact is, the German tanks were inefficient to produce, compared to American/Rus equipment.
Shermans and Tigers And Panthers all had seperate roles to fill, think of the Sherman as more of an IFV, It would support the infantry advance, think of the Tiger as the defensive armour, and the panther as a tank hunter, all had different roles, all did their job to some effect.

Expecting the sherman to go up against panthers is like expecting a plumber to do your house's wiring, sure some plumbers can, but his primary role is to do the pipe work.

In that, The Sherman was to support infantry in what ever way it could, It was effective against the Pz4 and Pz3, but of course a Tiger would destroy it, the Tiger was designed specifically to destroy enemy tanks.
The panther was also designed after the Sherman, so you're comparing obsolete vs modern, which is irrelevant.

The panther also had many reliability issues with it, you can blame that on POWs in the industrial role for Germany, But the fact of the matter is, the Germans made complicated and often inefficient tanks during world war 2.

Also, how else do you explain fitting the slow-moving 75mm gun on a tank? Because it worked against the German lighter tanks, and was able to fire a hard hitting HE round.
The panther was not able to engage infantry to the same efficiency as the Sherman was able to because it was designed with armored combat in mind, to fight the Russians.

@Birdy890 Not at all, you make some good assessments and I agree with many of the points you made. It can be very difficult to make fair comparison between German and Allied tank designs without considering tactics, doctrines, production issues and all without getting tangled up in political or nationalistic loyalities. The Germans did design the Panther to be built in large number as its all around universal tank to compete directly with the M4 &T34 so its a fair comparison in that respect.

I agree with you that the Panther was a nice tank, I just don't see the point in comparing it to the Sherman, sure they met in battle, but the Panther had different purposes than the Sherman, which is why I had stated the Sherman as an IFV, because its application as a medium tank later in the war was revoked as the Americans realized that style of fighting didn't suite Shermans, putting them against Panthers/Tigers.

@Birdy890 I think much of this stems from both sides expecting the war would not last very long, the Allies discounting the German advance in technology and Germany continued to produce out of the rubble of heavy bombing tanks that were not 100% ready for combat. I think it was unfortune that Allied planners did not give our troops a tank with more firepower and protection though, I'm sure they could have come up with an alternative design better suited to the what they were up against.

@xCh34pShOtx actually the Sherman's engine sound is very loud. The early versions with the airplane engines made the most noise.In this movie they tuned the enginesound down.But as said they used an enormous variety of engines as the war progressed; each one with it's own sound ofcourse.

The heroism and the determination of the US tank crew is very significant. Knowing that they are outgunned and out armored they still went inside that tank to fight on.
I saw a picture of a Sherman with so many 88mm holes in the front glacis that it looked like swiss cheese. If you were a Sherman tanker back then just imagine the pucker factor.

It's true, something I always wondered about also, The Americans had the best bombers, very decent fighters, best infantry weapon (m1 garand, B.A.R..etc), fine battleships and carriers and then the worst tank design you come come up with? surely they could have done better. still their making up for it now, the m1a2 puts all other tanks to shame now. The Sherman wasn't the worst Tank design in WW2. It handled the Japanese Tanks quite well, and could handle even the earlier German tanks. Its main problem was it was a Medium Tank that wound up having to fight Heavy Tanks later on when the Panther and Tiger came out. Against other Medium Tanks, it did a good job.

FASTER than the P51, the ONLY time an allied fighter could shoot down a me 262 was when it was trying to land. 1943-1945 Luftwaffe was mostly grounded due to fuel shortages. B 17 was a good bomber, but it was shot down left and right. I know, i have seen the footage and read the losses. Mate you think america had the best stuff. Think again. I read an autobiography of world war 2 Tankers. Interestingly, they did not blame the Germans for their massacre but they blamed their own tank designers and top brass who bought them. Those few Allied Tankers who survived a tank battle in Africa, laughed at the training they were given and knew that the chances were they were unlikely to survive the next battle. RIP.

The primary reason the Sherman was not upgunned was Gen. leslie McNair commander of army ground forces who blocked every attempt by the arnored board and ordance to upgun the Sherman. He espoused a tank destroyer doctrine. He also blocked deployment of the M-26. Fortunatly he was "accidently" killed by "friendly" fire in Normandy the senior american officer killed "in Combat". The M-36B and a single protoype by Chrysler show the Sherman could have carried the 90mm which was an effective weapon.

@spacecadet35 Production of 76.2mm version was limited due to problems with it accuracy and ammunition, low rate of fire and less ammo storage. The Sherman was known for reliablity but modified variants had suspension failure problems due to the extra weight. They were not popular with crews either because it was difficult to escape from, it had no extra armor protection.. the Shermans other shortcoming. Most of these tanks were fitted with less desirable and less reliable Chrysler A57 engine.

The radio sergeant points out if the engine and gun work, but the radio doesn't; one cannot find the enemy. The gunnery sergeant then points out that if the radio and engine works and the gun doesn't, then what you have is a 30 ton portable radio. A Firefly might not be great, but it made holes in the enemy.

Those brits can be very resourceful though, the story of the P-51 Mustang comes to mind, here was this very clean new airframe but with a dog of a motor, the Americans dumped on the British.. that really wanted high perf. fighters not slow ground attack/recon plane. Thankfully some clever lads over there figured out the RR Merlin engine would fit.. the rest is history.

@doktorbimmer Unfortunately a lot of the British tank effort was stop gap measures. They always had to fight with what they had, not what was needed. A bit like the Americans with AT guns. The Sherman was perfectly capable of doing its primary function of shooting up the soft stuff. But due to a lack of heavy tanks the Sherman was often asked to double as a heavy tank and that is when the problems started. I am still impressed that they got a 17 pounder into a Sherman turret.

As a result the M4 became an imbarrassing failure for the Allies.. It was very poor planning back in America that a suitable tank was never made available to troops on the front line. at least the Sherman had a good radio for calling in Air and Artillery support.. otherwise the war would be lost

The pathetic armour plating, under powered armament & to make things even more nerve wracking for the crew, was the thought of being burnt alive if there was a hit in the rear due to this tank running on petrol. NO ALLIED WW2 tank was a match for a German Tiger or Panther!! The Germans simply had a far superior array of tanks and weapons.

Remember, that Sharman was about 30 tonnes while Panther was around 45 tonnes and Tiger almost 60 tonnes.
Sherman wasn't good but wasn't very bad. It was comparable with Pzkpfw IV (especially versions with 76 mm gun or 17 pounders). It has weak offroad performances (especially compared to T34) but was reliable, easy to produce etc. I will say that M4 was worse then T-34, equal to Pzkpfw IV and better than British Cromwell tank.

IS-2 was also a dangerous match for the tiger and panther. In the battle of France the British Matilda II proved superior to the German panzers, as did the French Char B1 and SOMUA S35.

Shermans and Tigers And Panthers all had seperate roles to fill, think of the Sherman as more of an IFV, It would support the infantry advance, think of the Tiger as the defensive armour, and the panther as a tank hunter, all had different roles, all did their job to some effect.

In that, The Sherman was to support infantry in what ever way it could, It was effective against the Pz4 and Pz3, but of course a Tiger would destroy it, the Tiger was designed specifically to destroy enemy tanks.
The panther was also designed after the Sherman, so you're comparing obsolete vs modern, which is irrelevant.

The panther also had many reliability issues with it, you can blame that on POWs in the industrial role for Germany, But the fact of the matter is, the Germans made complicated and often inefficient tanks during world war 2.

Also, how else do you explain fitting the slow-moving 75mm gun on a tank? Because it worked against the German lighter tanks, and was able to fire a hard hitting HE round.
The panther was not able to engage infantry to the same efficiency as the Sherman was able to because it was designed with armored combat in mind, to fight the Russians.

It can be very difficult to make fair comparison between German and Allied tank designs without considering tactics, doctrines, production issues and all without getting tangled up in political or nationalistic loyalities. The Germans did design the Panther to be built in large number as its all around universal tank to compete directly with the M4 &T34 so its a fair comparison in that respect.

I agree with you that the Panther was a nice tank, I just don't see the point in comparing it to the Sherman, sure they met in battle, but the Panther had different purposes than the Sherman, which is why I had stated the Sherman as an IFV, because its application as a medium tank later in the war was revoked as the Americans realized that style of fighting didn't suite Shermans, putting them against Panthers/Tigers.

@Birdy890 I think much of this stems from both sides expecting the war would not last very long, the Allies discounting the German advance in technology and Germany continued to produce out of the rubble of heavy bombing tanks that were not 100% ready for combat. I think it was unfortune that Allied planners did not give our troops a tank with more firepower and protection though, I'm sure they could have come up with an alternative design better suited to the what they were up against.

It's true, something I always wondered about also, The Americans had the best bombers, very decent fighters, best infantry weapon (m1 garand, B.A.R..etc), fine battleships and carriers and then the worst tank design you come come up with? surely they could have done better. still their making up for it now, the m1a2 puts all other tanks to shame now. The Sherman wasn't the worst Tank design in WW2. It handled the Japanese Tanks quite well, and could handle even the earlier German tanks. Its main problem was it was a Medium Tank that wound up having to fight Heavy Tanks later on when the Panther and Tiger came out. Against other Medium Tanks, it did a good job.

Everyone has their own thoughts, the P 51 was a great single engine fighter, When it encounted the FW190 and bf 109G that was a good match. What i don't understand is how he thinks that a single engine fighter is better than a jet, a JET. P51 had 6 .50cal and the me 262 had 4 30mm cannons, and was 150 miles faster.

P51 was a shitty fighter when compared to FASTER and MORE AGILE and MORE HEAVILY ARMED fighters of the luftwaffe. the P51 had a fucking 31,350FT weak altitude. compared to the FW190? which had 37,430FT the ME262 was also deadly in ground attack with its 24rockets

BUT WHY DO YOU THINK THE BRITISH AIRFORCE WAS ALMOST ANNIHILATED??? BECAUSE THE BF 109 WAS A TAD BETTER. THE SPITFIRE MK IX WAS JUST AS GOOD AS A BF 109G. MK V or MK I or II were shit against a bf109 E or F or G. Hurricane? HAHAHAH!! Are you serious?! Against a bf 109?? P51 was just as good as the BF 109G.

And ALOT of P51 pilots were lost in accidents. Don't forget over 200 allied pilots were lost every day. On average. Some of the crap you come up with.... Honestly...

its ironic how the first two british pilots died in the war were killed in a friendly fire accident when they were shot down by a spitfire squadron, sheesh, that bitch should look at wikipedia "friendly fire" article, the dumb allies broke a record in friendly fire accidents during WW2. the germans were surprised how many times they see english bombers killing english troops by accident. even the flying tigers did many mistakes

Me 262 was 150 miles faster than any allied plane. Me 262 could easily take down a P51. Allies lost over 200 planes a day. Don't believe me? Give me you email and i'll send you the facts. Tells you about the production and losses of allied aircraft. From what i've read you need to rethink your facts. Kriegsmarine pussies? What how old are you 12?
