  • well done such a hard tune for a banjo player....and only a banjo can play that tune!

  • Fantastic tune! Have wanted to learn it since ive heard it first time with Barney Mckenna in 1992. Do you know where to find the right notes for this song? I ve search the web and found at least 3 different note pages.

  • i have to say, i love your style of playing, but i seem to have a different method of playing to you... i usually keep my thumb at the third fret and i use my first three fingers for the first 5 frets, using the little finger for the sixth and seventh frets.

  • your a legend, ive always wanted to learn this tune and now a can thanks. keep posting and keep up the great banjo playing!!

  • Great! Thank you.

  • Awsome. Excellent video, thanks!

  • no it wasn't to be negative, i was just wondering. You are an excellent musician

  • can i ask how long have you been playing the banjo?

  • @fizzyc97 Sure, as long as you're not here to be negative. I've been playing the tenor since I was 19, so about six years.

  • How the feck do your fingers move that quickly O.o...

  • Great playing. What kind of banjo are playing?

  • You do a great job of demystifying. Thanks so much.

  • wicked awesome.

    Cead Mile Failte!!!!

  • fantastic. where is this guy from

  • Pretty amazing -- I just started learning this tune and this set the bar about as high as possible I guess. Outstanding and I did not know there were 5 parts. The versions I've heard seem to take the aabb pattern? 5 stars!

  • Gee, thanks, mando. This is a really great tune, but there's a less elaborate version that's a favorite of fiddle players that DOES just have two parts, so you're not wrong.

  • class.......this helps alot with this tune. Sound (irish slang for thanks)

  • This sort of playing is why I want to try the banjo, but, I need to stick with my flute/whistle for now... Too bad I can't a version like this for the whistle.

  • Great to see both versions being played

  • Thank you for showing the most beautiful piece of Irish banjo I have ever seen and heard. My goal is to get close and enjoy the Irish Banjo - Perfect!

    Malcolm Ruddock

  • Wow, that's pretty high praise. At any rate, you're definitely welcome, and post a video of the tune when you've learned it. Slainte!

  • lord ur making me sick id love to be able to play like that..well done and thanks for the tutorial versions of your videos their great help

  • what about "gravel walks" please? (very slowly)

  • Will do. It might not be up today but by the end of the weekend, certainly.

  • cad faoi "gravel walks" le do thoil?

  • Uh oh, the ruse is up. I can't speak Gaelic. That's the only phrase I know. What did you say?

  • it is the version i want. i just find it difficult to work out which "open notes" you are playin'. maybe you could zoom your camera out? slan agus slainte!

  • Aha. Well, I've sort of inundated everyone with different versions of "Mason's Apron" recently, so I don't know that I can justify another one so soon. Let me wait just a little while, then I'll play it slowed down AND zoomed out. Slan agus beannacht!

  • where you gettin' your notes from?

  • I learned this tune off a recording by Kierhan Hanrahan. Is it not the version you're used to? I know I don't hit all the notes he does in the fourth and fifth parts, but it shouldn't make that big a difference.

  • I've been learning the tenor for about 4 years but have been unable to get a grip of this one so far. This is one of my favourite tunes and Barey and John's live duet helped get me hooked on the music.I'm going to give this tutorial some serious wallop and am determined to master it. Thanks for posting

  • Best of luck. I hope this helped.

  • Yey thanks for doing this tutorial it is my favourite tune on the tenor banjo! :)

  • Yaaaay! It's in sync! Thanks for posting

  • Slainte and you're welcome, paul! Thanks for commenting.

  • go go good stuff. spk soon
