Love the press on gears. Looks like a great shop too. Gear drive is the way to go but, I sent my heads off to Okeefe Branch. Love their work and the turn around is good. Harleys first twin cams had alot of problems that where fixable. Replace your cam bearings NOW S&S are all bearings no cage!
hope you still look at theis.. what heads you using in their.. and how did you get the cam chest togeather with out using the aligning screws for the oil pump? i am planning on eaither 103 upgrade or to upgrade my 95 to a 98 with domed pistons and ported sc 103 plus heads..... from watching you do the cams looks pretty easy.. did you have to make sure the engine was at top dead center for this?
@1fast2liter It was my cousin who did the work. I just filmed him while he was working on my bike.
The heads are Harley Davidson Screaming Eagle Performance Heads.
We didn't go to 103 because we didn't want to have to open the entire motor. I'm very happy with the upgrade to 95ci. I've got plenty of power and the bike has remained very reliable.
@candlstudios no i realize you only did a 1550 thats what i am at right now... i have 103+ heads ported and i am gonna go to a 1550 domed piston.. what i was wondering is how did he put it back to geather did he realign the oil pump or since he didnt remove it in this instal it wasnt nessisary
@candlstudios no you dont but when you did the cams in ur upgraded did he do it? as you did the full upgraded to 1550.. i got it thought you can snug up the stock bolts finger tight then spin the rear wheel in 5th gear while puching on the pump and it shoudl kinda pop into place.... from all the reading i have done thats how ya do it.
just a small detail for you i asume do you have to becareful of the cam shaft alignement when you change the chain for the gears because you have two of them , because when you press them back in place you dont realy want to them back out again. thank very much. Mark ( France )
installing the jugs on a harley is 1000 times easier then a 4 banger ill rebuild a harley over a sport bike any day....except for triumphs 3 banger cuz the cylinders are cast into the block which is the definition of easy
you can make installing the gears to shaft and bearing to shafts easier by cooling the shafts in the freezer and warming gears or brgs on a light bulb, or cooling the inner cam brgs before pushing them into the case.
I know one reason is HD is forced by the Federal Gov't (through the EPA noise limits) to make a motor that doesn't exceed a certain level of mechnical noise.
but they make after market parts to do this...Didn't the evo's have timing gears. Must have been a recent law? How much noise do they actually make that you can notice over a set of decent pipes?
Do you have a vid of this bike running?

@1fast2liter OK, now I get your question. I don't have the reinstall of the oil pump on tape. I'll ask my cousin next time I talk to him.
Do you have to mess with the oil pump just to change the pistons?

do you have to check crank runout with the gear drives? and on a scale of 1-10 what would you rate this as?

Why can't harley do it right from the start and do away with the timing chain and put timing gears in????? Nice job & nice shop setup.

21st Century be damned, there's no better era of music than classic rock from the 60's and 70's when you're working on a Harley.

Concur with the music selection. I can't imagine building a motor while listening to cRap. Nice shop.. cool vids.
