Good that you took 3 videos to compare these. However you could have saved a lot of commentary by using a Suunto Core with a white background & black letters. You could have mentioned that the Suunto is not only menu driven, but the display changes for each button and shows what to do with each. Also the compass calibration of the Suunto is MUCH easier. And you might have mentioned the "auto" fucntion in the alto/baro mode-one of the coolest features. There is a depth gauge on Suunto, etc.
@rodhosilyk All good points. For those that don't know, the "auto" function switches automatically between the barometer and altimeter. If the watch notices rapid pressure changes, it assumes the altitude is changing. If the pressure change is slow or non existent it assumes it's stationary and switches to barometer mode.
thank you for these videos, they have helped me tremendously on what i want in my next watch. along with the comments, i think i have narrowed what i want to be the PAW80. the paw80 is a little cheaper, but does all the features as these. cheers!
Hi nikudes, nice review. I am really trying to decide which watch to buy. Love the look of the PAG240 but am really concerned about the reviews I've read regarding faulty solar battery cells. Any thoughts on that?
question: btw, great review BUT i see you're comparing a lower end cassia with the suunto - have you seen the casio paw2000 or 1500? given either of those watches, which would you prefer? is suunto your "go to" watch? the video really makes the display on the suunto washed out - is it really that bad in person? i'm wrestling with the decision of which watch to buy - please advise
@thomasaconway I've seen the PAW2000 and just had a look at the PAW1500. I think with these watches it come down to personal preference. Do you like the feature set? Do you like the way it looks and how it functions? Those are usually the drivers for me. If you're really into accuracy, the atomic timekeeping on the 1500 is nice. (I noticed when I ran a two-month accuracy test on the Core and the Pathfinder, that they were both off by about 15 seconds/month. The Core ran slow, the Pathfinder >>>
@nikudes ran fast. In my field test video, the altitude sensors on both were within about 95% accurate to the GPS. So the PAG40 was already technically on par with the Core and Casio doesn't mention that they made any improvements in that dept. with the new watches. The best bet, I think, would be do go to a store and try them out so that you can decide if you like the way the look, they way they work, and if they have the features you like. Happy shopping! And thanks! Glad you like the video.
These comparison videos were great, impartial and informative, the Suunto seems to have better features whereas the Casio is better constructed I believe. The Suunto display is a big issue for outdoor use. Still undecided.
How long does the Suunto battery last on heavy usage mate? I heard it's not very long? Granted you can change batteries easily, but still. Thanks, great video.
@richardmilk In my experience the Suunto's battery has lasted from 6 to 8 months. It's so easy to change and the batteries are readily available, at least here in the States (battery CR 2032). The battery on the Casio just died after four or five years but the manual says to take it to a watch repair place to have it changed. Not handy if you're out in the field but you do notice the face getting weak for a couple of weeks before the battery goes.
Can you please tell me the exact model number of the Casio you're demonstrating here. It appears that Pathfinder is a line of watchers and not a model.
Can you please tell me the exact model number of the Casio you're demonstrating here. It appears that Pathfinder is a line of watchers and not a model.
Just a few questions does the core have an hourly beep because I like when a watch has that it helps you keep track of time better also about how the screen is i don't want to get a watch that is kinda hard to read. Are the numbers the same colour as the pathfinders background where nothing is and how thick is it? Is it smaller thickness than the pathfinder? Thanks for any help.
@MON4G The Core doesn't have an hourly beep that I know of. The Pathfinder does. The Core's screen can be hard to read in low light. The numbers on mine are orange but Suunto also makes models with grey numbers. The Core is about 14mm thick while the Pathfinder is 17mm.
i am leaning towards a casio because i want a watch that is simple to use and still has the essentials. This seems like a good watch for me. where could i buy one of these online preferably in australia?
Great comparison video! I have the Casio Pathfinder and I'm really satisfied with it. The display is exceptionally clear and easy to read and accessing the various features is quick and direct. I find the look functional, not toy like. Everything on the watch has a purpose and it is designed for toughness and ease of use. Granted, the Suunto has a sleek, attractive design but the menu driven interface looks rather cumbersome to me compared to the Casio. To each his own I guess.
@MAG315 Thanks. Glad you liked the video. I agree--the Casio's interface is more direct but harder to use, if you forget how it works. The Suunto is less direct but easier you can find what you're looking for instead of having to remember what button does what. Totally personal preference, which was my goal in making these, to show people what they're all about and let them decide.
oh let's just touch watch faces and make up already...
Very thorough review. Like you said -it comes down to what you're looking for- they are both really good brands and you can't have both toughness and technology without sacrificing something else too. I just got a sgw100 1v casio for my 20th and I'm waiting for it, but have heard good things about Suunto as well! Love them both.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Casio is a toy maker. In the long run you will be bored for toys. Suunto is quality - like are the Polar Electro products. We don't make toys in Finland.
Why you think so? Are you some kind of an expert? Nokia, Suunto, Polar, Kone, Elcoteq, Patria etc. are all crap? World's largest cruise ship.was just built in Finland. Is it crap?
If there is a flaw in a Finnish product, it's because it was made in China, Taiwan or the like.
@WindowOnFinland well I prefered the swiss watches like wenger , I use that....but I think casio is a good brand and your comment is very bad for casio watches.
Why wine about the screen is hard to read and the color of the wristband?? you bought the wrong core model.. there are Core's with light screen and other colors..
I wouldnt by a care that was orange and then wine about it and say, well... The car has it shortcomings.. The color isnt nice and such..
BUT!! I thank you for this videos because you made me realize that the Core All Black isnt for me, I will look for a model with the light screen instead of the dark one, but the dark is cool
I wasn't whining about it. The color and screen were just different on the watch than I expected from looking at it online. Anyway, glad you got some usefulness out of the video.
Great review :))) the only thing I have to say is that the Casio is not G-shock, model you reviewed is a ProTrek (Pathfinder)... I'm sure it's just lapsus lingue :D
Thanks for the vid man, I've been considering the Suunto specifically for fishing. Change in barometric pressure is a huge tell for fish. I like a practical watch though, and if it's hard to read thats a big negative. I know they offer this watch without the inverse blackout screen, might have to try that. In your opinion, what watch would be better in direct sunlight? regular or inverse?
I have owned both watches. I use it as a back up land nav aid in the military. I bought the Suunto first for its features, the watch band broke and the numbers on the bezel wore off in six months. The bezel also scratched easily. The altimeter was definitely more accurate than the casio. The Casio has withstood the wear and tear with out a scratch and for my purposes, I need my gear to work and be durable.
Very good series. I just received my Core this week and overall I like it. Its a bit different because I am more familiar with the G-shock series, but its nice for what it does. I rather like your Pathfinder, as the newer models seem to look more and more like G-shocks and not quite as 'chunky'. I might look for one later on.
It won't do it automatically but if you start a log in depth meter mode it will time your dive and give you other information like rate of descent (I think) when you review the log. Remember though it's only meant to go to a depth of 30 feet.
Thanks for the GREAT comparison of the watches, simply informative as it could be!
My only request is, could you please make a forth video where you compare only what one watch can do the other cannot?
For example... spend a few minutes, in a wrap up, on what the Casio Pathfinder can do that the Core cannot. Then a few minutes on what the Core can do that the Pathfinder cannot.
Informative and concise reviews, thanks very much! I have the Pro Trek, all black, and can recommend that watch and I have the Suunto on order. (Black and Orange) All the best and thanks again
hey buddy the reviews are really helpfull...but now the casio has come up with PAW1300g(cloth strap)...now it lands me back in the same confusion as it is slimmer than earlier pathfinders...i also heard that the core has some bugs...is that true???
and i really appreciate the casio feature of "world time"!!!...so can u just tell me weather the 1300g is good enoough as core coz i would not prefer any other pathfinder coz they are bulkeir!!!
Hi, sorry, but I don't have any experience with that model. Are you near a store where you can go have a look at both? Otherwise I'd just make the decision based on price and the features you're looking for. I haven't had any problems with the Suunto.

Thanks for your good review! I got same the Core as you have and there is a way to adjust contrast actually. You will need to put it in sleep mode. This will erase all logs!
