  • Folks, that's how it's done downtown.

  • splendid! Next I would like to see Peter Hammill cover Right Said Fred.

  • if you listen carefully, John Cale's arrangements for this song are beyond LCD's!

  • Great Voice....

  • I prefer the original cause it sounds more "early John Cale" than this one. Still it is a great cover though.

Many thanks to LCD Soundsystem for the wonderful song and for asking John Cale to perform it his way.

  • I do like this cover, better than the original ,not by much ,i just like the groove.Normally i would prefer it with synths and most other covers are awful.

But this one has so much feeling.(except the vocals)

  • Uh, do you know that you erroneously have inserted a still of "J.J." Cale at 5:19?

  • @txemanovelo

Lets just pretend that your comment makes sense.

  • Whoa, Captain Picard covers LCD Soundsystem?

  • @koobecafmit what´s this daft comparison to do with John Cale?

  • This guy is truly great! Check "fragments of a rainy season" or Helen of Troy

  • chucked in an image of j.j. cale around 5.50 bit who gives a fuck? hes a legend too

  • @joerussoe2 Yes! That's the spirit!

  • Best song of the last decade I think but I must confess I havnt listened to them all. Sometimes I like the Murphys version better but other times I prefer this one. The LCD version on Jools Holland is a fantastic version short, fast and very cool. Proof there a future to real music. I have a cd with all three versions burnt for the car best 20 minutes of music for any car journey

  • IT'S FUCKING IGGY POP AT 3:14 TOO.

  • I always thought the relentless piano in the original LCD version was similar to Cale's piano in "All Tomorrow's Parties", wonder if that's how this happened, I don't recall Cale doing many covers, other than his killer version of "Heartbreak Hotel". Always thought Cale's voice was underrated. Oh yeah - best cover of Cohen's "Hallelujah" too.

  • sounds like jean luc piccard is singing this.

    brilliant

  • sounds like jean luc piccard is singing this.

    brilliant

  • hmmm not so bad but the original is better. this guys voice is ok, but he has lost a lot of the other melodies and beats that make the original much better

  • @eamamar Hence, you want it to sound the same - that's how it starts - what a LARD.

  • @TheOldEchoes I dont want it to sound the same, I just want it to sound good and interesting! The simple fact is that John Cale just sounds like an old man singing this song half a beat off time. it could be totally different and still be awesome - think Johnny Cash vs NIN.

  • @eamamar Poor comment.

  • not a scratch on the original

  • @pigshavecurlyflutes Actually, isn't that Iggy Pop at 3:10 too?

  • This song is so damn great, anyone will sound good playing it. So props go to the songwriters:LCD Soundsystem. But the song would have never existed without the existence of Brian Eno, hence no wonder Cale liked it so much to cover it.

  • Great cover by one of the greatest artists ever...but why is there a picture of J.J. Cale in a John Cale video?

  • @analogblue I'm guessing that he googled John Cale looking for as many photos as possible to make this video then at one point he has clicked and saved a JJ Cale photo.... I'm also guessing you know this but just wanted everyone to know that you know your Cale from your Cale.

  • Oh boo fucking hoo! Anyone wold think I've seen you in the last TEN fucking years! Get over it.

  • @TheOldEchoes

no need to fear my dear one would never take a life

it was one of those moments similar to the time when i asked the undertaker what did the old fella look like , you know one of those tings that i might need to know like what color was his lips .

The bloody funniest part was he being the undertaker , looked like the something from the Adams Family , for Gods sake show some mercy and have another drink

  • This is great! I'm a huge Cale fan but don't know LCD Soundsystem that well . . . but I'm going to check them out now.

  • oooooooooooo yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

  • @TheOldEchoes

    away and scratch yourself oldman

  • Not better than th original...but very good

  • cale version made this glorious as heroes was

  • right again Sir

    maturity is a fine thing

  • a masterpiece!!

  • really good cover, chunky drums!

  • Having revisited this cover I like the change in certain lyrics. At least he has tried to correlate some meaning with his soul. Splenidly, both souls look honestly ugly, still appealing.

  • Excellent. Never even knew this existed. One of my favorite songs get's an admirable cover.

  • John Cale's version is alright, but LCD Soundsystem is absolute perfection!

  • Although, it is another way to access Cale' music by slutting off someone else. Think about it. Joy Division have been the ULTIMATE hookers for twenty years.People have uysed and abused them. Their music remains.

  • @parksy010101

You need to read Ulysses young boy

  • @blarneystoned10 Obviously, you haven't.

  • @TheOldEchoes

shut up and kiss my strawberry lips

  • @MsHarrythedirtydog FUCK OFF.

  • @TheOldEchoes

  • @TheOldEchoes

what you don't like John Wayne ? me neither he was good in the quiet man

  • @MsHarrythedirtydog The Duke was fine - unlike you comanche.

  • @TheOldEchoes

    smart ass

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, pretty respectful. Good job.

  • more epic

  • Great cover. Very Joy Divisiony.

  • @28g34ajbsd ,

In an interview with The Independant Peter Hook named Cale as one of his musical heroes.

  • Kinda ironic that the thing that I liked best about the original was how the piano playing reminded me of Cale's playing with the Velvets, and that's the one thing John really changed about the original. I'd rather hear it with some thick viola drone and less beat.

  • There´s something with this man, impossible to put in words.

  • This is such a great version. This is like the "velvetian" vision of a new classic song. The John Cale's vocals with his british accent sound freakin' incredible.

Great cover, no doubt about it. But the original version (by the cute plump and co.) is "the" master piece.

Anyway... John Cale is a fuckin' genious. If I were from LCD, I'd be so glad and proud of being covered by a mighty legend.

  • To me, this song seems so much more personal and deep when John sings it. I like the original a little bit more, but I still think this song is beautiful.

  • I'm mixed. I mean it's cool in the sense that it's an old man of Velvet Underground fame covering a song that's already awesome fairly well. It kind of sucks in the sense that it's an old man of VELVET UNDERGROUND fame covering a song that's ALREADY awesome FAIRLY well.

And trust me, I love John Cale. Certainly better than Franz Ferdinand's cover, so that in and of itself is merit enough.

  • 5:52 velvet underground times?

  • wow talk about an honor...to have someone like cale cover one of your tunes when you know they look up to him so much.amazing

  • Man, you know how fucking great is this cover? 10/10

  • cale is smart to keep in touch with whats cooking nowadays.

  • Great cover... I like John's voice on this one

  • lcd, lcd, lcd!!!

  • thanks for posting this. Personally I like John Cale's version better than the original...

    brilliant. :-)

  • Cheers mate, I like all the versions of this song "LCD's and Franz Ferdinand's" But i'm a Cale fan so I'm probably too baised!

  • all three are excellent. it's hard to pick a favorite but i'm going with James and lcd. there is something in his work. a feeling that comes through. i know that explains music in general but i hear parts of me in there. LCD has the sweet ass tunes!!!!

  • @MarkNick75 kind of reminds me how johnny cash sang "hurt" and practically owned that song afterwards...

im an lcd soundsystem fan but cale really owns this song...its his song..he really brings a layer of depth that you dont hear in the original

  • Cale, Cale, Cale!!!!!!!!!!

  • I like this better than the original. But then again, I'm always going to be biased towards Cale.

  • First einself
