I do like this cover, better than the original ,not by much ,i just like the groove.Normally i would prefer it with synths and most other covers are awful.
But this one has so much feeling.(except the vocals)
Best song of the last decade I think but I must confess I havnt listened to them all. Sometimes I like the Murphys version better but other times I prefer this one. The LCD version on Jools Holland is a fantastic version short, fast and very cool. Proof there a future to real music. I have a cd with all three versions burnt for the car best 20 minutes of music for any car journey
I always thought the relentless piano in the original LCD version was similar to Cale's piano in "All Tomorrow's Parties", wonder if that's how this happened, I don't recall Cale doing many covers, other than his killer version of "Heartbreak Hotel". Always thought Cale's voice was underrated. Oh yeah - best cover of Cohen's "Hallelujah" too.
hmmm not so bad but the original is better. this guys voice is ok, but he has lost a lot of the other melodies and beats that make the original much better
@TheOldEchoes I dont want it to sound the same, I just want it to sound good and interesting! The simple fact is that John Cale just sounds like an old man singing this song half a beat off time. it could be totally different and still be awesome - think Johnny Cash vs NIN.
This song is so damn great, anyone will sound good playing it. So props go to the songwriters:LCD Soundsystem. But the song would have never existed without the existence of Brian Eno, hence no wonder Cale liked it so much to cover it.
@analogblue I'm guessing that he googled John Cale looking for as many photos as possible to make this video then at one point he has clicked and saved a JJ Cale photo.... I'm also guessing you know this but just wanted everyone to know that you know your Cale from your Cale.
no need to fear my dear one would never take a life
it was one of those moments similar to the time when i asked the undertaker what did the old fella look like , you know one of those tings that i might need to know like what color was his lips .
The bloody funniest part was he being the undertaker , looked like the something from the Adams Family , for Gods sake show some mercy and have another drink
Having revisited this cover I like the change in certain lyrics. At least he has tried to correlate some meaning with his soul. Splenidly, both souls look honestly ugly, still appealing.
Although, it is another way to access Cale' music by slutting off someone else. Think about it. Joy Division have been the ULTIMATE hookers for twenty years.People have uysed and abused them. Their music remains.
Kinda ironic that the thing that I liked best about the original was how the piano playing reminded me of Cale's playing with the Velvets, and that's the one thing John really changed about the original. I'd rather hear it with some thick viola drone and less beat.
This is such a great version. This is like the "velvetian" vision of a new classic song. The John Cale's vocals with his british accent sound freakin' incredible.
Great cover, no doubt about it. But the original version (by the cute plump and co.) is "the" master piece.
Anyway... John Cale is a fuckin' genious. If I were from LCD, I'd be so glad and proud of being covered by a mighty legend.
To me, this song seems so much more personal and deep when John sings it. I like the original a little bit more, but I still think this song is beautiful.
I'm mixed. I mean it's cool in the sense that it's an old man of Velvet Underground fame covering a song that's already awesome fairly well. It kind of sucks in the sense that it's an old man of VELVET UNDERGROUND fame covering a song that's ALREADY awesome FAIRLY well.
And trust me, I love John Cale. Certainly better than Franz Ferdinand's cover, so that in and of itself is merit enough.
all three are excellent. it's hard to pick a favorite but i'm going with James and lcd. there is something in his work. a feeling that comes through. i know that explains music in general but i hear parts of me in there. LCD has the sweet ass tunes!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
alright i love this song but i do not like this guy singing it at all. the music is good but the voice is just terrible. franz ferdinand and lcd soundsystem did way better
Folks, that's how it's done downtown.

I prefer the original cause it sounds more "early John Cale" than this one. Still it is a great cover though.
Many thanks to LCD Soundsystem for the wonderful song and for asking John Cale to perform it his way.
