One day I pray FSM digs through some vaults and releases the wealth of brilliant music composed by Billy Goldenberg. Perhaps one of the most underrated composers from the Silver Age.
I wanted the cheesey muzac David Mann listens to....the kind of music only a fussy henpecked businessman driving a ketchup coloured car could listen to! I think its cheesey organ and rimshots are hilarious and belies the deadly seriousness of David Mann's (that's two 'D's, two 'A's and two 'N's!) situation.....a little complication...hahahahah. Brilliant film with very little dialogue.
I think this is one of favourite scores - along w/ Rosemarys Baby, Hoffmann, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and The Mephisto Waltz. I wish somebody would sort out a really good Goldenberg discography!
Yes, and I think one of those people you see there is a young steven spielberg appearing to check his watch. He said he was under pressure to bring the movie in on time- and was severely criticized by ABC for requiring 2 extra days.
This is indeed a rare collection of soundtrack music, particularly the original music uploaded here. Billy Goldenberg has produced some excellent soundtracks and was also involved in the music for the Columbo films/series. In fact, the music from Duel is also used in some of the Columbo productions. For example, in high tense peter falk scenes the music heard here beginning at 5:14 is used quite a lot. This original Duel montage is absolutely superb!
Billy Goldenberg was one of the top TV composers in the 70's and 80's. He also wrote the score for Michael Bennett's "Ballroom" Broadway musical. Great talent and a great person.
Billy has some fantastic sounds - sounds like metal rubbing against metal Watched Columbo Ransom For A Dead Man some amazing sounds in it very beautifull would love a collection of his music
There was actually a private pressing LP w/ the Ransom for a Dead Man score and Up the Sandbox on it...and two others I've forgotten! It is an amazing album. Turns up on ebay occasionally.
No label number, no date given (1970s). A promotional item only. White label. Full title: "Columbo - Ransom For A Dead Man plus other film & television scores composed and conducted by Billy Goldenberg". This record contains music from the following: The Harness (starring Loren Greene), Up The
Sandbox (starring Babs Streisand), Ransom for a Dead Man (from the Columbo episode) and Change of Habit (starring Mary Tyler Moore and Elvis). Impossible to find LP.
Billy Goldenberg is one of the best ever! If you ever watch the obscure NBC series Ghost Story/Circle of Fear for the early 70's, hthe soundtrack from that show is his best work IMO.
Goldenberg's theme for the "Night Gallery" pilot film is also pretty good, as is his scoring of the Spielberg-directed segment entitled "Eyes". A great talent.

In the phonebooth scene(at the snake gas station) you can see reflections of the camera man and others watching the movie!
