I've always heard that as well. I agree with you to an extent. Bass is one of the easier instruments to pick up and play at first. A beginner could be playing in bands in no time (granted he or she has a good sense of time). As far as mastering it, I think the same could be said for any instrument. To master anything takes time, dedication, and passion.
