they did that because at the time that lavern died, they thought that would be the last season, so when the series continued, they made a different charecter for her to play so she could still have that job

They killed her off because during that season, they thought it was gonna be the finale. Since they continued the Scrubs series, they had to bring her back.

It wasn't a ploy to make it more dramatic. :p

When the network renewed them, the director decided to bring her back as a new person, but with the humor that JD was the only person who thought that both the characters she played looked alike.
