This piece is just so bad. I could write something like this, without the aid of an instrument. Normally that's a pretentious statement uttered by idiots, but in this case it's no exaggeration. It's so simple, move some major triads around in root position. Aside from the slightly irregular metre (which is extremely old hat) in the beginning, it sounds like a grade school musical, minus the kid vocals
My only problem with Glass is his tendency to recycle his material (over and over and over). I do love his music, even his later stuff which is usually based on musical ideas he wore out years ago, but I don't understand how a guy who so clearly has run out of ideas continues to be the most successful composer in this country? I know I find the perpetual energy of his music to be the most addictive. Anyway, great performance! You guys sound like you're having tons of fun.
Hahahaha This shows the true pretention some youtube comments. You could have said the microphone was "bad" but isntead it was "poorly constructed". That made me laugh.
I am not saying that all music should sound like Ligeti's. But it's the attitude. The attitude of bringing something different to the world, of redefining what's beautiful. Glass did some OK things in the past, but A LOT of his music is very superficial and this piece belongs to that category. I am sure it's fun to play it, but I find this music to be completely empty. Sorry for using some harsh words. Glass has said a lot of stupid things about emotional music. I am just tired of his nonsense.
@Justino111 I want to know what Glass says about emotion in music! Where did you hear/read his comments? As much as I personally love his music, I feel like has a lot of explaining to do for the shortcuts he constantly takes.
Pawel Markowicz: first of all, just want to point out that I am not criticizing your performance. I am sure you are very talented and can play all kinds of music and very well. Now, back to this "music": it is indeed very much related to Hollywood. It's full of simplistic and naive harmonic progressions, full of bad-taste-Gershwinian melodic cliches. Maybe it's a piece for written just for fun. But hey, i'm sure you know Ligeti's piano concerto. He brings rhythms and melodies to another level.
gotta love glass, its just impossible not too. and congratulations on orchestrating (in both sense of the words) i thought i was doing my bit of getting Phil out there with the speed-painting, but this is something else. i really respect your talent and dedication to make this possible
sounds rather good... but it's hardly to talk about quality when you just hear this piece. so, could you upload anything by bach, mozart, beethoven etc.etc.? would be nice...
Excellent job! It's great that you got the opportunity to perform this piece and you performed it well -- I clicked on this expecting to see Dennis Russell Davies' performance. This was an excellent exposition of the piece as well as a good performance. Be sure to thank your university for the opportunity to perform a "modern masterpiece."
Hello Joel! Thank you - I'm very pleased you enjoyed the video. In fact, this performance would have never been possible without the kind support of both my piano teacher and the head of the piano department at the University of Music Vienna. For a student it's quite uneasy to initiate the performance of a contemporary work with an orchestra involved, but I'm convinced that making people get more and more in touch with the beautiful work of Philip Glass is worth some effort.
Thanks for the comment, go9zu! Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to play the first and second movement with orchestra yet, but nevertheless I've studied the whole concerto - and we'll see what future will bring. But I'll make sure to inform you if there is any chance coming up.
lpyyxw, thanks for watching and for the recommendation. The 2nd movement actually is the reason I got in touch with this concerto. And my big dream is to play the whole concerto with orchestra one lucky day...
I absolutely agree with you, movement II is fabulous!!
Interesting. This may not be the best piece Glass ever written but I know his compositions are very hard to play live (one of the reasons he has his own orchestra). But this is a very interesting great watch.
This was the best recording quality I could afford. I also think the sound is too sharp, many nuances got lost due to the bad equipment, but after all the concert was a great success. However, this is not the 'typical' Glass sound he became famous with, since the Tirol Concerto was composed recently in 2000, and this movement's harmonies are partly dissonant and a bit jazzy. - Thank you for watching, aus00sie!
musica orrenda di serie B...ma Glass non conosce altro che accordini e arpeggini?!?

what???? what is this??? stupid hollywood mediocre music??? total garbage!!! unbelievably stupid, retarded and frivolous music.

Fact is: This movement has nothing to do with Hollywood whatsoever. What are your criteria to judge this piece so negatively?

This is not a professional recording, is it? Sounds very hard and disharmonic. Love Glass usally, but here?
