Dropping a stick mostly happens when playing style and technique allows the player to be very relaxed with grip, The downside is that, occasionally, something happens that interferes and the stick goes. The main thing is to be professional and carry on. Shut your eyes and listen. You would never know it had happened.
Please don't kill me but, oh come on! Every drummer drops a stick sometime. Even the best drummers of planet earth! Kind of funny, i agree with that. But to put a vid of a drummer who loses a stick on youtube is kind of stupid.
P.S Please don't post comments to me about "but he is the greatest. the greatest should NOT drop a stick EVER!
A lot of people with strong opinions. Sorry, but even Weckl drops sticks. Super rare...but everyone does it once or twice.
He's still darn near untouchable, and always one of my top influences.
Too many haters from both sides of the spectrum.
It you've never dropped a stick, then go ahead and say something, but also remember that there are young kids watching this video and reading your thought vomit.
Hey, it's called stage presence! Some throw them in the air, some twirl between their fingers. Only the best can juggle their stick and youve just witnessed it!
Truly the funniest bit in this vid is Tom looking away, him seeing someone else's reaction on Dave's blunder and turning back to Dave, still having not realized what just happened!
Hey, when you play with a loose grip and proper technique you are gonna lose a stick every now and again. My instructor in college used to have us practice dropping sticks and grabbing new ones to see how fast we could recover and not lose the groove.
it would only be a fail if he freaked out and stopped playing and/or let the groove suffer or die. since he didn't do any of those, i'd say it's definitely a win.

That's definitely not a fail, that's how you recover flawlessly. If this were audio, you'd never know he even dropped a stick... that's why this guy is the best. He always stays cool no matter what.
Even in this situation he's a master! One time I saw that he got a piece of wood from the stick in his eye... I wondered, how is he gonna fix this? Because tears came out of that eye, but he stayed super proffesional and just keeped playing on that high level.
He is human. Just for a drop of a stick...so what's your point?

still managed to recover without the music being effected :)
