Well that's exactly how close they're supposed to be. They quite literally built the IS-F to compete directly against the M3. I've got a BMW 335i and I'm selling it for the IS-F in a few weeks. I went with the IS-F instead of the M3 because the IS-F performs 90% as well as the M3, while offering a far superior warranty (70k miles vs 50k), rock solid Lexus reliability, and comes standard with more options. I love everything about my BMW, it's just way too fragile. It's time for a change.

I drove the IS-F. I compare it to a Challenger. Good in a straight line, thats it. Same goes with the C63 AMG. Fun with traction off cause it oversteers quick, but with traction on, it understeers at best. Huge engine, nose heavy.. But quick. But being that this segment of cars were built to go around corners that were the M3 wins. Thus why I am yet to see one comparison where the M3 hasn't won against the Toyota IS-F, Benz C63, and Volkswagen RS4/RS5
I like how the Japanese engineers make lots of power with a smaller engine, for example the rotary engine puts out tons of power but remains small. I hate how European cars all have V10 and V12s in order to compete with Japanese engineering master pieces like the Skyline series.

A lot of factors play into a vehicle's performance, but if you HAVE to focus on just one, then focus on the "power-to-weight-ratio". That's why a 4 cylinder 190 hp Lotus can walk a 300 hp V8 Mustang all day long. The Lotus weighs less so it's power-to-weight-ratio is higher.

@Autoshopwing yea there is not a single person out of this 11 i kno whose cars have never been to the shop atleast once every year for repairs (and the repairs arnt cheap either) and my buddy just bought a brand new 135i in december 2009 and his car has been to the shop 5 times already! the last repair took over a month to fix.........i mean all my family cars are honda's and the oldest one (05 civic w/ 85,000 miles) has not had any problems other then scheduled maintenance.

@JasonZX12R BMWs do feel faster, they grip the road a lot better, the IS-F on the other hand feels like a sedan and thus drives like one until you hold down the gas pedal and then the engine opens up. Where the BMWs are made to go, which is probably why they suck as sedans. Oh well you get what you pay for you know. I have a M3 and a IS-F. I like the F much better, holding on to the M3 because BMW said they might not make another V8 car.
your right if ppl are looking to race they will get the ISF because most people race on straight roads anyways most. Both cars are pretty close but the ISF is a 4L V8 which is bigger than the m3. I have to say I really like the design of the ISF but lets take a look at whatsinside the cabin. The M3 with the DCT tranny is right on with the ISF, maybe quicker, however, the m3 with the manual just doesnt match up to the gear shifts from the 8 speed tranny of the ISF, but m3 with either tranny will win on the track :) Can't wait to see the LFA!!! till then ///M power!

what you kids need to understand is that there's a significant different between track specs collected by professional driver and the amount of power a skill-less schmuck with $60-70k can get out of a car like the rather uncontrollable M3 or the more easily piloted IS-F. the IS-F is definitely a better highway king whilst the M3 is no doubt a circuit queen.
The m3 with the DCT tranny is equal if not better. Only with the manual tranny it has trouble with the 8 speed gear box of the ISF. M3 wins at both highway and the track.

2009 BMW M3's tracks specs, 0-62mph in 4.5's and 60-0mph in 98ft, skid-pad 0.98g, slalom 73.3mph and quarter mile at 12.5's at 113.2mph. So it smashes the IS-F and actually has better braking and slalom numbers than the Nissan GTR.
They are extremely tight no matter what the numbers say. This vid shows exactly that. The new CTS-V IS an absolute monster. I'd love to see what numbers they can actually put down. The GTR will eat the M3 for lunch by the way. AWD+around 70 more hp=the M3 has no chance on the track or street against a GTR. Sorry bud.

@Autoshopwing yea there is not a single person out of this 11 i kno whose cars have never been to the shop atleast once every year for repairs (and the repairs arnt cheap either) and my buddy just bought a brand new 135i in december 2009 and his car has been to the shop 5 times already! the last repair took over a month to fix.........i mean all my family cars are honda's and the oldest one (05 civic w/ 85,000 miles) has not had any problems other then scheduled maintenance.

@JasonZX12R BMWs do feel faster, they grip the road a lot better, the IS-F on the other hand feels like a sedan and thus drives like one until you hold down the gas pedal and then the engine opens up. Where the BMWs are made to go, which is probably why they suck as sedans. Oh well you get what you pay for you know. I have a M3 and a IS-F. I like the F much better, holding on to the M3 because BMW said they might not make another V8 car.

your right if ppl are looking to race they will get the ISF because most people race on straight roads anyways most. Both cars are pretty close but the ISF is a 4L V8 which is bigger than the m3. I have to say I really like the design of the ISF but lets take a look at whatsinside the cabin. I own a 2008 lexus isf and my brother owns a 2008 coupe m3 we always joke around and sometimes get into a pretty long debate over which is better but what we always end up saying is that they r both amazing cars and NONE are better... they are almost the same and if ones beating the ohther its by a couple of inches meaning my front bumper is to his front door, but yah they r both reat cars and i love my isf to death

The E92 BMW M3 is better than the Lexus IS-F. I don't know why people keep saying the IS-F is better.
The BMW hands down got better luxury over the Lexus.
The E92 M3 offers a traditional 6 Speed while the IS-F don't.
The IS-F offers an 8 speed regular automatic with sports mode w/ paddles. While the E92 M3 offers a DCT with paddles, which comes in 6 speeds.
A 8 speed car? That's pathetic. It would be changing gears way too much.

The M3 with the DCT tranny is right on with the ISF, maybe quicker, however, the m3 with the manual just doesnt match up to the gear shifts from the 8 speed tranny of the ISF, but m3 with either tranny will win on the track :) Can't wait to see the LFA!!! till then ///M power!

what you kids need to understand is that there's a significant different between track specs collected by professional driver and the amount of power a skill-less schmuck with $60-70k can get out of a car like the rather uncontrollable M3 or the more easily piloted IS-F. the IS-F is definitely a better highway king whilst the M3 is no doubt a circuit queen.

The m3 with the DCT tranny is equal if not better. Only with the manual tranny it has trouble with the 8 speed gear box of the ISF. M3 wins at both highway and the track.

Yes. 4 door ISF + passenger (160 lbs) vs 2 door M3 with carbon roof . The M3 also had stock 19" rims and no passenger. The ISF is a heavier car no doubt.

Its funny too, because most BMW owners I have seen, can't even hit an apex properly anyways.
ISF is just better all around, better quality, better fuel efficiency, better reliability, and better interior. Who cares if the M3 is .1 seconds faster here or there. In about 3 years when the maintenance program ends, you will see those in the shop every other day, history does repeat itself!
People, especially BMW fans, forget that these are BOTH still road cars, and the ISF just does that better!

2009 BMW M3's tracks specs, 0-62mph in 4.5's and 60-0mph in 98ft, skid-pad 0.98g, slalom 73.3mph and quarter mile at 12.5's at 113.2mph. So it smashes the IS-F and actually has better braking and slalom numbers than the Nissan GTR.

They are extremely tight no matter what the numbers say. This vid shows exactly that. The new CTS-V IS an absolute monster. I'd love to see what numbers they can actually put down. The GTR will eat the M3 for lunch by the way. AWD+around 70 more hp=the M3 has no chance on the track or street against a GTR. Sorry bud.

Thats what I dont understand about Cadillac. It has to have 2 cars to compete with one of BMW's. Their CTS-V and STS-V both compete with the M5. And considering the 09 CTS-V has a 3-year advantage over the M5 its NO SUPRISE its faster. 09 vs an almost 4 year old car.
