  • LOL G STRING

  • Hey Ed, just wondering if you'd do a lesson on 2-hand tapping. please and thank you.

  • @Numbdegree Ed doesn't know how to tap, therefore, it would be impossible for him to do such lesson.

  • @asaness1k I didn't know that... now that I think about it, I couldn't picture ed tapping to begin with. It's a very tricky way of playing. Well at least I know now.

  • Great lesson Ed. I'm palm muting all the time now.

  • Yo Joey

  • Beautiful Surf color on that "Lakie" :TB IN THE HOUZE>>>:

  • I love that bass :O

  • In this vid there are ONE thing very very bad: The negative vote! xD

    Thanks Ed! I love you!

    (excuse my english, please...)

  • hi,ed,what set of pick ups sound better to your ears??

  • twinkle twinkle little stat? lawl

  • Hi Ed, can you let me know which rhythm machine you used in this video? thanks!

  • @dino777bass - The funk grooves were a Boss DR770, the jazz stuff was a live sample.

  • Thanks so much!!!

    I love this technique!!!

    Thanks, thanks!!!

  • Nice

  • How do you cope with the the volume differences between palm muting and regular fingerpicking? A compressor maybe?

  • Thanks for showing us how to keep the muted strings punchy by moving up the neck on strings fatter. Palm muting sounds excellent to get a thumpy guitarron sound. Also cool Seafoam Green Lakland bass with matching headstock!

  • Why'd you sell the bass?

    Just wondering.

  • @dww0902 - It wasn't getting played much, nothing wrong with the bass.

  • Love it! I use the sound a lot when recording and playing quieter blues and country gigs but I'm too lazy to hone my technique and learn how to get a consistant sound when palm muting so just use a sponge at the bridge.

  • Not surprisingly, Ed, your own bass sounds WAY better than any of the basses you've reviewed on here. Love that groovey clip upfront. Not an easy thing to do swingy funk while palm muting.

  • Nice lesson. Actually you should call it "side of hand mute". :-)

  • Great lesson! Now everything about this technique seems clear - so its time to play!

  • Good Job Man Ed :D!!! thanks for the lesson ;)

Now What would be nice is if you do a slap lesson Ed Style :D

Thumbs up if you want a slap lesson by Ed :D ^.^

  • @bmadridbassman33 - I have a DVD out on slap. You should go buy one or two of them! ;)

  • good job man ! thanks for your leasons !

  • another highlight from Ed... great

  • Thank you sir.

  • what kind of bass is that? can you review that one? :)

  • @hoppefan - It's a Lakland 44-07. I can't review it because I sold it a while back. But there are several videos of me playing it on my channel. Check the "favorites" section.

  • @BassGuitarMag Awww man... Sold the 07?!?! Hope you replaced it with something good! =)

  • @BassGuitarMag thank you :)

  • your bass is sick!!! :P thanks a lot for the lesson!!

  • Wow, this is a lot harder than it looks. Great lesson though.

  • Keep up the lessons Ed, very nice.

  • You're palm muting is so good.. It's almost completely muted. Flawless technique.

  • Hey, Ed! Thanks for sharing. May I ask what kinds of drum machine/software do you use? Thanks a lot

  • @allpass91 - In this video I'm using recorded live drums for the jazz stuff, the funky tunes are a Boss DR 770.

  • Hey Ed,

I'm going to start to build a custom bass ( a 6 stringer) and was wondering which pickups I should buy. As I am building a six string, I have limited options when it comes to pickups. My thoughts so far are either:

Seymour Duncan Active Phase 1 soapbars

    SD Active Phase 2 Soapbars

    EMG 45DC Dual Coil Active

Wondering your thoughts on this. By the way, I play mostly rock/metal with a little punk and slap. I also like a slightly trebley sound.

    Thanks

  • @lawdactyl - All good choices. Carvin makes a nice 6 string humbucker, and Nordstrands are awesome. Most important - measure your total string width, and the string spacing (unless the pickup has a bar magnet).

  • @BassGuitarMag thanks, I think that will help

  • Comment removed

  • "Place your karate chop directly on the bridge" NINJA FIGHT AT THE BRIDGE! XD Great video.

  • FINALLY! I've been waiting a year for this...Thanks as always Ed :)

  • @handidrummed - It was done, just in limbo as far as where it was going to get posted.

  • i appreciate you taking the time to make little videos like this for the fans.

  • "..dig in more with the tip"...

    That's what she said!

  • Thanks for the cool lesson, Ed. Definitely made me think about the various ways palm muting could enhance a song more than I probably ever would have otherwise.

By the way, how do you like those Chi-Sonic pickups on that Lakland? I've been kind of curious about those.

  • @StrangleHoldv1 - The Chi-Sonics sound great! Very versatile pickups.

  • hahaa oh man this video has really good sound quality. that bass will wake up my neighbours

  • 6th!

  • @flipperg2v

cut off some guys hand and place it under the strings. brutal low end bro.

  • @xPsuedo That's what I'm talking about!!!

  • Getting hot in Austin?

  • @1951abcd - Hot and dry.

  • @BassGuitarMag Same near Galveston

  • @1951abcd - Yeah, we could use some rain up here.

  • @BassGuitarMag Hot and wet here in Singapore :(

  • what type of palm muting is best for metal?

  • @flipper2gv It isn't generally used for metal outside the electric guitar.

  • @surfertron20000 lol I know. "... the best for metal" is somewhat of a running gag on talkbass.

  • @flipper2gv LMAO

  • @flipper2gv for bass, a pick works well. boost your treble & mids so you don't get lost in the mix with the guitars

  • @flipper2gv pal muting with a pick ala Dave Ellefson

  • @flipper2gv

palm on the saddles and with a pick

  • @flipper2gv Whatever sounds good.

  • @flipper2gv HAHA best comment ever!!

  • @flipper2gv That kind of plam muting it plam muting when playing with a pick! As a guitarist (rock or metal) to show you :) Thats what Jason "newkid" did!

  • @AttitudeCastle the "... best for metal" is a running gag on talkbass.

  • @flipper2gv Well Ed does get many (serious) questions about, what is the "... best for metal" plus everything is a running gag on Talkbass ;) (Kidding of course! I'm a user, though haven't been on in a long, long time!)

  • @AttitudeCastle That's because of the Quintar. and carrots. Obviously.

  • @flipper2gv Exactly!

  • @flipper2gv obviously there is one palm muting type. And you won't palm mute if you are playing bass, it's freaking low already.

  • @feverhood "...best for metal" is a running joke on talkbass

  • @flipper2gv OOH :D I thought you aren't jokingl. Ok, I'll keep that in mind, since I don't have an account on talkbass at the moment

  • thanks for putting some lesson stuff up
